Family Guy (7/17)

Unfortunately, I'm inclined to agree with those who believe that the show has jumped the shark.

And the A-Ha bit went on too long, to the point where it just felt like 80s cultural name-dropping. Maybe if they had done more of an actual parody of the video...

I don't know whether the people bitching never watched family guy in the first place, forget what the show was like before it was cancelled, or simply saw the old episodes so much that they think they are somehow different. I can't tell.

But to say that Family Guy never had random plot jumps and ridiculous stories in general, along with random gags and references that often went on for far too long than would be necessary for the joke, you're showing a great level of ignorance. That's what the show is. That's what the show has always been.

I don't know what Family Guy you people remember watching, but it has always been very random. Were you guys bitching fans in the first place? Or did you jump on the bandwagon after the show was cancelled and the hype started to begin?

I still enjoy the show also. Best "cartoon" on television for sure. I think it still has the magic.

When I say random, I don't mean random jokes. I mean random plotlines that keep going all over the place with no rhyme or reason, with characters doing random things that they have no reason to do characterwise (since when does Brian crossdress? Lois steal?). This is the same thing that happened to the Simpsons, characters stop acting like the characters they've always been just for a reason to have an episode plotline.

And by obscure references, I didn't mean Goonies or Neverending Story, those were all great references. I'm talking about things like the guy he did coke with... umm okay guy with big nose. Wow... great. I know the old episodes also had very obscure references, but at least they either kept the joke really brief, or allowed the joke to be funny without having to know who the guy was ("Yeah this is just like what happened to Benjamin DÂ’Israeli" (flashes to a man in old style clothes writing down, he looks up) "You don't even know who I am!")

And for the record I am still enjoying the new episodes. Just kinda dissapointed. Can't wait for American Dad to get back though.

I think it's moreso to do with the flash back weirdness is seeping into the NOW show. You wouldn't hear people complain about Herculoids if it were a "Remember the time when.." flashback.

I recently watched the 3rd season for the first time, and I found it much better than some of these new episodes.

Episode 4 really didn't sit well with me. It went from The clam possibly shutting down, to turning it into a Kareoke bar, to Peter starting a band, to the family starting a band [with a really shit song], to SNL. It had some great bits [The "I play by my own rules" guy, the flashback to President Bush], but most of the rest was meh.

Episode 5 was just weird. Just 2 episodes ago all the women were hatin' on Quagmire, now Lorette has an affair with him? The split of the two hasn't done anything thus far other than one quick joke. Doesn't he have a Son?

Ah well. Each episode has been written by different writers at this point. Episodes 1-3 were great IMO. And any joke with Mayor Adam West is still hilarious.

I've found American Dad getting really good. I want more, damnit!

I recently purchased the 2 volumes on DVD and I have to agree. To me, this season's like the other 3. Lois got crazy in Season 3 and she's still is thanks to this Sunday's episode.

Season 2 I think we find out Meg might not be be Peter's kid, Season 3 we found out she slept with Kiss, This season she's a freak.

It's the same show. It's not funnier or worse. It's just that the wackyness got cranked from a 7 to a 10. Which is fine by me.

definitely a hilarious episode. i was laughing so god damned hard at the neverending story bit :P

I...thought the episode was pretty consistent with most Family Guy stuff and still awesome and hilarious. ADAM WE.
That was, IMO, the best part of the episode. Nobody messes with Adam WE! :lol

I'm going to have to agree with this assessment, from someone on the SA forums:

Eh, it was alright. The A-Ha video was the funniest part and nothing quite topped it after that. I still think they need to work on how they present their jokes. I can pretty much break down every joke they've done this season. 90% of the humor is either:

-Really forced, out of place "This is worse than that time when..." dialogue, and then cut to flashback
-Rehash of a joke from an old episode
-80s pop culture reference out of nowhere, especially this season

Mix in someone falling down abruptly, blatantly trying to be racist or offensive just for the sake of doing it (the Asiantown segment, the AIDS song, the vomit sequence), then add some filler segments (the Quagmire sketch) and you've got a show.

I'm not saying it's a bad show now, but they started relying more on this stuff before the show even got canceled. The show still remains entertaining, I just wish they'd switch up some of their tired jokes instead of going with the same formula every week.

The show's definately not bad, I still greatly look forward to every Sunday evening. But simply, most of these new episodes simply don't match to the episodes pre-cancellation. Another thing is that the gags seem to run much slower, the show doesn't seem as fast-paced as before.

Lethal Weapons from Season 3 is definately in my top 10 of FG episodes mostly because of the Lois barfight sequence, as that was like a 4 minute bonanza of funny.

-Aww The Clam? Why couldn't we go some place fancy like the Olive Garden?

-Excuse me New Yorker, but I believe you're sitting in my seat and I had sex with your mother last night.
-What did you just say?
-Oh, 'bout the seat? Or me plowing your father's wife?

-Hey, is your refrigerator running? Because if it is, it probably runs like you, very homosexually.

-Jets suck, Yankees suck, Knicks suck.......Krypton sucks!

And then nicely finished off with "Get outta here you stickin' New York bastids!" and the guy smashing into the door. Seriously, nothing in Season 4 has come close to that sequence. At least, IMO.

Oh oh oh, you guys have too high expectations. This was atleast as good as the average s1-s3 episode and you know it. It's still waaay above what the Simpsons ever were as you didn't really get real LOLs from the Simpsons as you do from FG, all imo ofcourse.... man I'm sick of the simpsons...

I dunno... wasn't the one with the Star Wars ending from this season, too? I thought that was a pretty damn funny episode.

And the funniest part of the Lethal Weapons episode wasn't even that barfight. It was split between 2 stewie segments:
Lois' fights sensei:
"Go Lois! Emasculate him with your incessant nagging! *looks at guy next to him.* Heh, women. YOU know!"
Stewies flashback to playin basketball:
"What?! I aint trippin you trippin foo!"

You live in a strange little world.

(And saying that, with a 24 avatar, after the past season? Wow.)

Yeah, what the hell is up with me sporting an avatar from an Emmy-nominated show? (not that I would expect it would mean anything to you)

Anyway, stop trying to find things to bitch about people. If you didn't get the references, you need to check out some stuff. :P

What's to bitch about? I couldn't make it any more simple: 'Family Guy' isn't that funny anymore. Seaons 1, 2 and 3 made 'Family Guy' the funniest show on TV, PERIOD. (EVERY SINGLE EPISODE had me in stiches). Season 4 doesn't live up to those standards...and for 'Family Guy' to have such a huge fanbase that restarted its television run, people are expected to have high expectations. Season 4 clearly doesn't meet these expectations.

Once in a while, people differ in their opinions

Yeah that Star Wars reference with the tie fighters was a DIRTY CHEAP SHOT

Shame on you Seth McFarlane with your cheap shots >: (
Did I say cheap shot? sorry, I meant cheap trick.

It's going to lose the humour if he throws in a star wars reference every episode.
