An exception to the rule :p

My thoughts so far:
- Is the fact that most currency have been weakening relative to the USD having an impact to where Sony is shipping PS5 (you make less profits in JPY give the costs are likely to be in USD)
- PS5 is now behind the PS4 by 3/4k and it might go even future behind (couple of bigger weeks for PS4 next week in its lifetime)
- XBS is ~167k behind the Xbox OG (if this sales numbers continue, will be caught up by Apr/May next year)

An embarrasment!
The issue is they have nothing really for the japanese market for games this year, hardware is gonna be sent where they know they have software to sell. Next year i would think japan will get alot of stock with ff16 and ff7 rebrith. If you are stock limited you send it where it will make the most impact.

Why do people keep buying the regular Switch? Are they just not aware that the OLED is only slightly more expensive for a much better screen?

So this is where all that UK PS5 stock came from?

100%. USD/JPY is up to 135yen now, vs less than 110 a year ago. They are essentially "making" an 20% extra per sale by selling in the US (or Europe) than they would get selling in Japan compared to a year ago.

This also exposes another negative for their reduced Japanese game development footprint. Right now they could be paying their Japanese staff the same amount of yen to make games they would have paid them a year ago, but would be getting paid in dollars and euros worth 20% more when they sell the games internationally... but instead they are paying California (or UK) salaries/expenses to make most of their games.

If you're going to spend all or almost all of your time playing it on the TV, the OLED screen doesn't really benefit you.

We all got bad taste as a collective. Shredders revenge should be #1 in every region.

I mean, that game is more likely to appeal to people who actually watched various incarnations of the Turtles franchise which I’m not sure how much exposure it got in Japan to begin with.

So pitting it against the primary video game based off an anime that was so popular that the manga sales proceeded to finally dethrone One Piece as the #1 selling Shonen Jump title after a 20 year streak, and not by a little, it outsold One Piece by FOUR TIMES as much, I mean, yeah, no way in hell something based off an American cartoon franchise stood a fucking chance in terms of Japanese sales. Maybe a potential The Simpsons game since I know that cartoon did actually do really well in Japan, but even that’s unlikely.

Switch sales are bad.

Ps5 stock is pathetic.

Xbox sales are excellent.
this is the switch's 3rd best week 25 and like the 10th best week 25 ever and ytd it is 30% above the 4.5 million 2019, the switch is doing just fine, and has 2 huge hitters coming up in the early fall and winter, another 5 million unit year is possible and totally nuts

Wonder if Jim, being an English man, is pulling some strings for UK market...
xbox can be competitive in the UK, securing it is important for sony, plus UK as a whole really really loves fi... EA football simulator securing those there are probably 50 million dollars a year of microtransactions annually from securing the UK, Japan prefers mtx on their phones and sony has gran blue fantasy or something like that for that sweet sweet mtx money

If you play your Switch mainly docked, there’s no difference. And you’re more likely to get some slight discounts on the regular switch.

Xbox making a name for itself in Japan! The power of game pass. It has worldwide appeal.
No it isn't. It's hard to overstate just how irrelevant the Xbox brand here really is.

Most Game stores outside of major cities don't carry the brand. Like, at all. I've been all over the place looking for a Series X here, but most electronic stores and Game stores here don't carry anything Xbox: No consoles, no games. The only thing they will carry is the Xbox controller for PC.

It's also speculated that an undetermined amount of consoles are being purchased by Americans on Military bases and China, where they are sold for a good profit. When you look at the best selling Playstation games in Japan, 5 of them are Final Fantasy titles (FF7 is the best selling Playstation game in Japan) and 2 of them are DQ games (Both 2nd and 3rd). There is simply no way that a platform that is not getting Final Fantasy VII remake, Final Fantasy XIV and Final fantasy XVI and has not been confirmed for getting Dragon Quest XII is going to make any inroads here in Japan.

It's just not happening.

I didn't think PC gaming was big in Japan. Are you saying PC gaming is bigger than Xbox? Xbox is on track to surprass the OG Xbox in Japan from what I've read. So we can say it's more RELEVANT than ever. If you compare it to PS5 then yeah, you can say it's irrelevant (although it did outsell the PS5 this week...!). And it's funny that you're running all over the place (all over the entire country?!) looking for an Xbox. Why? So you want a Series X? IF no, then why are you running all over the place looking for one??

Those games you mentioned might be the best selling games, but there are PLENTY of games that sell well (just not in that same league). Doesn't COD sell surprisingly well every year? And soon Xbox will be the home to COD so that should push numbers too.

You have to look at the numbers in perspective. Xbox had been dead for years in Japan. Only now are numbers trending up to where they once were.

Also, FF games are not on Switch but that is the dominant player in Japan. DQ came late to Switch too and yet Switch outsells the PS5 easily. I know it's the Nintendo catalog but you are trying to say a company can only succeed if they have FF and DQ. That ain't it, pal.

I think currently it is safe to say that yes, PC is bigger than Xbox in Japan. In fact, I won't even hesitate that it is bigger or even closer to playstation.

Realistically speaking, the only way Microsoft is actually relevant in Japan is through Minecraft. Last year, Minecraft alone was enough to comfortably outsell all Sony games combined. So Microsoft needs to double down on that.

Seems like Sony is too confident they can just make up the lost sales in Japan in the future and they prioritize markets where Xbox is stronger, I'm not sure that's a good plan but I can't think of an alternative strategy for them, stock is killing them.

It kind of depends on how broad your definition of PC gaming wants to be but if we include "Everyone that plays on PC" then yes, PC gaming is much bigger here than Xbox is. Games like Minecraft, Fortnite and especially Apex Legends are quite popular here. It's important to mention that streaming culture has caught on here as well, and most streamers do so from PC which probably influences as well.
Xbox is on track to surprass the OG Xbox in Japan from what I've read. So we can say it's more RELEVANT than ever. If you compare it to PS5 then yeah, you can say it's irrelevant (although it did outsell the PS5 this week...!).
Well sure, but the OG Xbox wasn't a very good selling console in general and even less so here. The total amount of sales of the OG Xbox were just 450k So saying it outsold it doesn't really mean all that much. The "Xbox Series outsold PS5 this week" is completely meaningless because PS5 stock tends to come in large batches where like 10k - 20k arrive in a week and then it takes a week or two before the next batch arrives. Xbox Series X stock drips more consistently every week.

If PS5 ships like 25k consoles week 1 and 3k week 2 while Xbox ships 5k week 1 and then another 5k week 2, then you're going to have 1 week in which Xbox sells more. That makes for great headlines but it is fairly meaningless.
And it's funny that you're running all over the place (all over the entire country?!) looking for an Xbox. Why? So you want a Series X?
Yes.

Call of Duty sells somewhat well when compared to other Western games, but it's a bit of a stretch to call it significant. CoD sells well for a western franchise, but it's unlikely to make people run out and buy an Xbox for it. It's also worth mentioning that Call of Duty seems to remain multiplatform for now.
Also, FF games are not on Switch but that is the dominant player in Japan. DQ came late to Switch too and yet Switch outsells the PS5 easily. I know it's the Nintendo catalog but you are trying to say a company can only succeed if they have FF and DQ. That ain't it, pal.
I'm not saying that a system must have these specific franchises to succeed, but what does Xbox have that has the same appeal here that it can compete with those franchises? Nintendo, as you rightfully pointed out, has the Nintendo catalog that appeals to a much broader audience. The only franchise Microsoft has that is super popular here is Minecraft and that's available on every single platform.

Re: some insight into steam numbers in JP*

Steam end of 2020 was 120m MAU (1.57% = ~1.92m)
Steam end of 2021 was 132m MAU (1.92% = ~2.6m)

Doing some bad maths but its growing at a decent pace; especially relative to the home console aka not switch userbase

*assuming only people in japan are setting steam to japanese.

One at almost 2mil the other struggling to to get 250k?
One is struggling at its own home turf and outselling weekly at just 2-5 ratio at best with weeks below that and now even losing it against a brand who had zero marketshare there last generation.

People do this every month…. Just like in 2026 you’ll probably hear stuff like wait till e3 and this gen is gonna be interesting numbers wise…….
Ps5 will likely end up slightly behind ps4 when all is said and done. PC too big now and all games releasing there.
