After Gamescom we have a bit more idea of how the near future of the Japanese market looks like.

As usual PS looks to have a strong Q1 and (also as usual) we seem to be alternating between strong periods of Switch releases and strong periods of PS releases.

I'd categorise the future as:

  • Now to the end of September - strong for PS and Switch
  • Q4 2023 - strong for Switch but weak for PS outside of Spiderman 2
  • Q1 2024 - strong for PS but very empty for Switch
Of course this is all subject to change after TGS and its related Direct and State of Play.

Highest week for Switch outside the launch year, that's crazy.
It was the highest week 34 ever, made an edit because 2017 data was slightly wrong due to an error that i have known for a while. Decided to fix it now because it incorrectly impacted on 2023 having the highest selling week. As you can see (link) 2017 was actually a 53 week year going by famitsu's weekly numbering. https://www.resetera.com/threads/media-create-sales-week-52-2017-dec-25-dec-31.14650/

Nintendo has been holding things very close to the vest these last couple years. Prior to the last Direct (June 21st) we didn't even know of any future Nintendo releases beyond Pikmin 4 (July 21st). That said, it wouldn't surprise me if 2024 ends up being mostly B-tier type offerings (remakes, second party, third party collaborations, etc.) with the bigger titles being reserved for Switch 2 launch. I guess some of it depends on if the BC rumors are true.

Even more crazy then!

Yes I'm sure we'll get some new things after the pre-TGS Direct, and we'll have to see if Nintendo's release schedule slows down as we near the Switch 2 launch.

It'll also be interesting to get more details on third party efforts, particularly Level 5.

All other hardware sees significant falls, but 3DS continues to absolutely dominate the traditional 2 screen gaming market with a 234% increase in sales over last week.

Never in a million years would I thought that a Pikmin game would be a million seller.

I really didn't think it was going to do well at all. I know Pikmin 3 Deluxe sold pretty well, but it was 2020 during the height of the pandemic with Switch sales through the roof and not much else coming out for the holiday season. Pikmin 4 releasing late in the Switch's lifecycle with several other critically acclaimed games just released or looming felt like a recipe for failure.

To me the Pikmin series always seemed a little bit like a passion project for both Nintendo and Miyamoto where the sales never quite matched the effort they put into it, but they kept believing in the property. It looks like the faith they've placed in this series has finally paid off.

I guess it never truly had a chance on a top tier system of their either. Not Gamecube, Not Wii U. It's cool they stuck with it.
