Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Getting solid performance with 560 Ti, i5 750, 8GB RAM. What is the best way to get vertical sync without having to enable it in-game?

I don't see much of a difference between vertical sync in-game or using the nvidia control panel while using Optimal. Seems to be locked at 30. Medium gets me up to 55FPS

Mine looks exactly like this but with SSAO and Cinematic DOF at 0, doesn't seem to be working. :(

Try setting the file to read only (and make sure what you've changed is still there), the file often resets to defaults if you touch in game settings, just looking at the options menu can do it.

Downloading the driver now! I got a question for you gaf, please see my specs below:

Intel Core I7 2600k
8 GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 570

With that system I am considering making an upgrade. If I upgrade to a GTX 680 will I really see a major performance increase for the money or is there going to be a bottle neck with the rest of my system?

the game just came out today and with pc games we very rarely get a good optimized game day one, nvidia/ATI will get new drivers out and so will ubisfot, is a matter of time and patience, in the meantime just try to look for that perfect balance of graphical fidelity and performance until new patches/drivers get released

I had a simple solution to all my performance problems.

I ran the game at 1280x720. Yes, that's a terrible solution on a 1080p monitor, but by George, it still looks fabulous, I can run it on Ultra setting, and I'm having a great time.

The end.

i7 2600k is a very very good processor, no way you would be bottlenecking your system, about the upgrade, the 680 its an amazing card but if a game is not properly optimized you could have a magic graphics card and the game would not run properly

Is it worth the money to do the upgrade though? That is my main debate, will I gain enough of a performance increase to justify a $500 video card?

Sorry if alresdy been asked, but whats the most fps heavy setting with the least visual loss?

I set everything to maz with 2xaa and its running almost perfectly, just need a little bit of smoothness

you have to keep in mind the rumors of the 700 series coming out on spring next year tho, if you could wait a few months for any kind of news that would be a win situation, but if you want to upgrade at this moment some people say that the 670 is even better for the price, ive seen some benchmarks were a OC 670 matches and sometimes surpasses the 680, IMO the 680 is seriously overpriced but its your call

Heh. There you go, man. :- )

I used to run Crysis at 1280x800 (16:10 monitor) w/2xAA for the same reason. It actually looked way better in motion at 1280x800x40fps than at 1680x1050x22fps.

Non-native resolution is annoying but we do what we must.

i7-2600k OC'd @ 4.4ghz (had to drop down from 4.8, FC3 was BSOD'ing).
16gb RAM
GTX 590.

With Fullscreen mode (Borderless gives me ~35fps average) DX 11, HDAO, AA at 4, Vsync at 1, and pre-rendered frames at 1, and all other options at their highest value (except for the post processing, which I put at high and shadows at high) I get locked 60fps.

It took me hours of fucking with settings, restarting, and general PC nuisance to get it running where I want it, but I finally did.

Lowest it goes is about 55fps, but the vast majority of the time it will stay locked at 60.

game is borderline broken. Performance issues are making no sense. I'm not supposed to get 15fps at optimal w/ a 670.

Edit: restarted game and I'm now getting 80fps in the same section. Wtf.

I spoke about a similar issue earlier. I was getting locked 60fps, then I restarted and was getting in the 30s without changing any settings. Then I reset the game and it was back at 60.

Starting up this game sometimes seems like throwing a dart at a dartboard to decide what frame rate you're going to be looking at.

I get the 30-60 issue every so often. To fix it, I disable Vsync - apply - back to the game - vsync back on, does the trick every time.

Man 310.64 has fucked something up for me.

1. My game is using both in game and cinematic even though I have it set to 0 (which seriously annoying)
2. I downscale and it's gone straight bananas. Game flickering and going blackscreen for a few seconds to a minute.

Cinematic and In game DOF should definitely not be active...yet it is. WHHHHHHYYYYZZZZZ?!?

I should have stayed on 310.54

Why aren't you using 310.70?

Game looks great apart from a couple issues.

Does anyone get this with effect when moving toward and away from certain parts of the environment? Kind've like they're shimmering into existence then shimmering back out, it's a weird looking effect, it's not just pop-in either.

And some of the shadows etc are pretty terrible, and by this I mean you have to move right next to some parts of the environment to kick in high quality shadows, move away, and they look like ass sometimes. This doesn't apply to everything, but a great deal of the shadows on structures etc.

Well I uninstalled. Those black shadows on the screen are driving me insane. I thought it was an SSAO, turns out it wasn't. :/

Game performance is super sporadic - I just realized I can get pretty much 60fps with Post FX on the highest setting... until I look at the sky.

Hey, I'm having a weird issue in the opening mission, where the lighting is different around every item. Examples -

Toyed with every option in the game, and looked around on my card's specific settings to no avail. Any tips?[/QUOTE]

AMD card?

wish I could help but I have the same issue. FC3 is a technical mess. It's really hard for me to look past these issues. I've spent more time trying to get it running correctly than playing the actual game.

Oh, computers.

Two hours I fought with crashes within the first 5 minutes of the game. Tried everything and anything, and I couldn't get out of the camp.

Then I remembered reading some thread somewhere about Blops2 doing the same thing for 500 series Nvidia cards.

So I get down to reference clocks (I have an Evga GTX 570 SC) and lo and behold, no crashes and more stable framerate.

"You can't explain that."

man I need a new monitor (or rather stop using my TV). For some reason after a while of playing this "effect" comes along where some of the letters are double or leave a trace or something. Like permanent ghosting if you will. After I quit the game this "effect" remains on my desktop and whatever im using for 10 mins or so. Weird as hell but im gonna blame it on the fact that im playing on a TV.

Anyway, now that I played for some hours I can post performance and such:

- DX9, every other setting on the max possible.

- Downsampling from 2040x1152.

- Constant 60fps 99.9% of the time. Game looks amazing and runs great beyond the annoying z-fighting and flickering (water in the distance is terribad on this)

specs:

- gtx 680 2GB@1200mhz

- i5 2500k@4.5ghz

- 8 gigs of RAM

also the game just crashed for the first time after 6 hours of playing

I get super low frames when I look at nothing but the ocean and the two textures they have as mountains in the background, the higher I go the lower the FPS but when I look at the jungle, the terrain, vegetation I get 60 so yeah.

This is on a 7970 by the way.

Here's my original post about it.

I just wish I could find a reasonable AA solution for DX9. SweetFX SMAA causes the game to launch to a black screen, inject SMAA turns all in game assets pure blinding white, the built in FXAA blows ass chunks and downsampling isn't cutting it.

im downsampling + post effects on max so I guess im using the in-game FXAA? if I am, im surprised because I ussually cant stand that shitty vaseline but it seems unnoticeable here.

Game runs surprisingly good on ultra settings.

...except for one thing. The opening sequence and subsequent credits sequence slow to a crawl, then chug even worse, until finally stopping altogether (or run at about 1 frame every 5 seconds). Then when I go to the menus, it still chugs even then. Restart, and same thing. I've got up through the latest patch (1.02). I've got the latest AMD beta drivers.

Is there something obvious I'm missing? I even tried running DX9 and knocking the settings way down. No difference.

Also: i5 3750K @4.3, 8GB RAM, and an AMD HD7870 @1150.

huh. maybe you guys can help me even though i don't know what you're talking about. i am finally trying to start the game after installing it for like three hours and once the first cutscene ends and the bad guy starts talking, i can't hear his voice. does anyone know how to fix this? i feel like i should probably be hearing his voice unless it's some mechanic that makes my character deaf.

Huh. Inject SMAA works fine for me.

Can someone tell me what this is. I have a hard time explaining it, but it looks kinda like static mesh or a grid of lines that appear on the trees and grass? It appears less so on my monitor, but on my TV its almost unplayable.

What ever it is its most visable when moving. If I don't move the camera it looks fine.

Any ideas what's causing this?

Do you know the definition of FML?

Tried it in my low end laptop which I use for studies. All settings to low.
i3 2.2GHZ, 6470M and 4GB DDR3.

Guys, how can I limit my FPS? My fps jumps anywhere from the high 50s to 30. I just want it to stay at a stable frame rate, is there a program or anything I can do in the settings?

Vsync 2 in the options menu limits fps to 30.
edit: I see you found out already.
