Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Noticed some people with similar or better setups than myself complaining of bad or inconsistent performance, so I thought I'd share my experiences. I have the game completely maxed out, with MSAA at 8, and HBAO turned on. I also have "Alpha to Coverage" turned on to enhanced, but I have no idea what that means.

I have been running very consistently at or above 60fps, and after four hours of game, have yet to see a single noticeable drop in frames. Hardware is a GTX 670, i5 3570, and 8GB of RAM. Everything running at factory speeds, nothing overclocked. I was primarily running the game at 1360x768 on my TV, but noticed no performance drop in running it at 1680x1050 on my monitor.

EDIT: I've noticed no significant graphical oddities or glitches, except that the first time I was in a jeep where a bullet pierced the windshield, all of the foliage that I was viewing through that patch of the windshield had a deep white outline that looked very strange. I'll try to grab a screenshot this afternoon when I get home from work if no one knows what the hell i'm talking about.

Hey guys,

I'm getting a lot of stuttering during gameplay and was wondering what your recommended settings were to help prevent this. Thanks.

GPU = XFX ATI R7850 2GB (not the black edition)
CPU = i7 860
8gb Ram
Win 7 64 Home Premium

My game stutters when in "borderless" screen mode while there is no stuttering in "full screen" or "windowed" mode.

So I've had very inconsistent, unexplainable troubles with this game and I hope someone can help. I have an i5 2500 and run on a 560ti, 16 GB RAM, Windows 7. I have the newest beta drivers.

I start the game up for the first time, everything's set to optimal, with DX11, etc., and it runs like shit. So I turn it to DX9, lower the settings and continue playing.

A while into the game, I want to see how the DX 11 stuff looks again. I turn it on, set everything to ultra (except post-FX), just for kicks, it runs like a dream, barely dipping below 60 FPS - ever. It looks gorgeous, runs phenomenally. Though I do get microstutter. So I do the "set max_fps=60" trick, which fixes it.

Now, I played the game like this for an entire evening, for almost 4 hours. No problems whatsoever.

I turn the game back on the next day, it's back to running like it did when I first turned it on - a difference of about 30-40 FPS. I never changed any settings, I never did anything whatsoever, except turn off my computer. I have tried everything since then to get it running like it did, but the only thing that makes it run comparably is setting everything to medium. Which sucks.

I'm just completely baffled here and it's basically killed my interest in the game, because I know it could be running and looking better than it currently does. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm completely at a loss here.

Edit: Also, a weird thing. I can't recreate the microstutter. It's completely gone on any configuration, for whatever reason.

I dont know how they tested this but you do not get 70fps on DX11 with everything on Ultra on a single 680. Not locked anyways. Framerate goes to shit at any area with enemies and such.

I swear PostFX is the biggest culprit from most posts I see on various forums. I set it to low (originally medium) and got more than 20 frames increase

Ok, i'll try that. I've been using the "Optimal" settings for my quality settings. I've also been running in Direct X11. Should I drop to 9?

definitley helps, i'd say avoid DX11 unless you have a powerful rig until they put out an update

Yeah, I meant that I kept that at medium, while everything else was set to very high/ultra. Even setting it to low now doesn't make a huge difference.

GTX 680
i7 2600k
16GB RAM

1920x1080, DX11, all Ultra settings except for Post FX (Medium), no MSAA, and getting a steady 60 FPS. I haven't even tried to turn on the MSAA because of what I've read on here, but a friend of mine with OC'd i5 and stock 670 says he has Post FX on High and x2 MSAA while getting a steady 55-60. So who the fuck knows.

since im past the intro sequence now (wich seems more demanding) I just tried playing around with DX11 just running through the jungle and hitting an enemy base

on DX11 I get anywhere between 50-60 sporadically with HBAO and no MSAA.

with DX9 I get constant 60

Everything on max including post FX.

this on 2040x1152 btw with a 680

i'll stick to DX9, not worth it

also for some reason on DX11 Dennis' beard has weird blue artifacts from time to time, lol

Ok, that's what I thought. I was only asking because my file doesn't have a "MaxFPS" setting in it. Am I supposed to add it manually? And if yes, where at specifically? Thanks.

nevermind. found it

Here's how my GamerProfile.xml file looks.

I'm also using D3DOverrider on top of this.

Edit: Also, anyone who is daring to use DX11 and MSAA, does the weird pixelated phasing in of higher quality objects occur while using MSAA? I remember Just Cause 2 would have this harsh pixelated dithering as you got closer to trees that only went away if you used 4xMSAA.

How do I get sweetFX to work if the game is still crashing on launch with the files in \bin using DX9

e- found the post

I've ended up limiting the framerate to 30 fps (half refresh + Afterburner @ 30) and the framerate is very consistent and microstutter free. Easily allows DX11 + 4x MSAA + Ultra without a hiccup.

I wasn't able to pull off a constant 60 fps without making cuts. Simply having a rock solid framerate, even if it's lower, works for me.

I did all of this stuff:

and I've seen substantial improvements. For some reason it runs better on DX11 but whatever. Messed with the ingame options and now it's running much better. Gonna overclock with afterburner and see if i get even better results. Thanks for the help everyone XD

I'm not 100% sure but I think putting it on Vsync 2 in the options will also limit the framerate to 30.

I can't decide if I play with DX11 + downsampling @ 30 FPS and everything on max or @ 60 FPS with DX9 with some settings like PostFX on medium. Is there a way to add SGSSAA to DX11?

The running better definitely is not a matter of opinion. At least from my experience. I was hovering around 30-35fps with postfx on medium. Set it to low and it went to 55fps
Ah, well, performance gains are definitely a positive thing. I was simply talking about the appearance of the game.

I like the look with FXAA, 4x MSAA and 1440p.
Works well with this game. Seems like I am the only one with the frameskipping problem though.

For some reason I just can't get motion blur to work in the XML. I can disable SSAO but I just can't enable the nice blur. Why all of Post FX's settings aren't separate is beyond me.

What are your settings/config? My game looks nothing like this. I'm scanning the thread but it's 30 pages and the OP doesn't have any additional info about common settings and issues

All settings at maximum in that screenshot except PostFX which was Low. 8x MSAA for anti-aliasing.

I have a weird issue... I'm not sure exactly how to explain it though.

I'm running the game at mostly 60fps which is fine but there's something weird going on with my IQ.

It feels like I have some kind of film grain... If I look at anything in front of me it's like the pixels are shimmering...It's really hard to explain. I tried taking screenshots but you can't really see it.

Here's my settings right now. I tried changing pretty much all of them at some point but it never fixes it.

Quoting myself since I still have the issue and can't find a fix.
