Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

If I decide to buy this game on PC, will it run like shit on the following specs?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
3GB DDR2 RAM
HD 6850 1GB
1440 x 900 monitor
Windows Vista 32bit

I'm playing an Xbox rental copy right now and from maybe an hour the game actually seems pretty good but doesn't look or run so well. Feels like a PC game they downported to Xbox instead of the other way around like usual. I heard the PC version was badly optimized though, and I won't be able to upgrade until at least next spring.

Somebody correct me if Im wrong but I'm seeing 4GB as a minimum for memory http://far-cry.ubi.com/fc-portal/en-gb/community/detail_news.aspx?c=tcm:21-65000&ct=tcm:6-231-32

I've come to the conclusion that Far Cry 3 uses the integrated graphics over dedicated (HD 4000 over 650M GT).

How do I make it that the game runs on my dedicated graphics card?

NOTE: Nvm, switching to integrated graphics drops frames from 25 to 4.. lol

Why am I suffering from poor performance? :(

I have an i7-3770K, 16 Gigs of RAM and upgraded from a 560 Ti to a GTX 670 and the game still runs like shit.

And interestingly, when I activate HDAO with the 670, I have a dark layer on the lower third of the screen ... good work, Ubisoft

I'm also running 3770k with 16gb using 670 FTW 4gb and its working pretty good in just about all settings I've tried. My rig is about 1 day old now so I haven't gotten a chance to OC or throw in my second gpu for some SLI but far cry has impressed me so far on very high and ultra settings. Make sure you have the latest beta driver.

You must be overlooking a setting or 2, is there anything forced on in Nvidia control panel, Nvidia inspector etc? That setup should be able to run it great, what resolution?

The dark layer issue goes away if you quit / restart the game .. I had it happen as well while changing settings.

I don't know, I never touch the NVidia control panel, the only thing I activated is VSync in the panel.

In the game I don't use MSAA, GPU Framebuffer is set to 3. VSync off.

And thanks for the nice reply!

Does D3D11MultithreadedRendering="0" do anything if you change it? Do you think this is for the number of CPU cores you have? Or is this and SLI thing?

Are you putting that within

Yes sir, here's a pic.

And a weird thing, when using the DX9 executable, even though I have DX11 set to 1 in my xml file, and in the in-game options, I can't apply MSAA, but I can apply Alpha to Coverage and change AO. Which is weird, since those settings get removed once you roll with DX9...so I don't quite understand why it's doing it, but I like it. I get a big performance gain with the DX9 executable over the DX11 counterpart, and I only lose the ability to change MSAA, which is too much of a resource hog anyways.

Does that make sense? In a nut shell, somehow I have DX11 features present in my game, even though I'm using the DX9 exe.

Change the postfx under the Custom Quality section to ultrahigh so it matches the one in your custom postfx settings.

Cause this game is a troll lol. Have you postfx on low? That helped me A LOT

I keep hearing everyone say turn PostFx down, but it seriously has almost zero effect on my FPS.

The only setting that nukes my FPS * 1920x1089 with 4.2ghz 3570k, 7950, and 8gigs is the AA settings. Putting on any AA kills my FPS drastically.. but I can have the rest of everything cranked and run a pretty good 50-70 FPS, about 58-60 avg.

So why nuke PostFx? Because of how it looks?

I went from medium -> low and gained like 20 fps

Is there anyway to get some AA working in game? Currently playing in DX9 mode and just want to 2x AA...but it doesn't seem to work in the nvidia control panel.

Your only options are the in-game FXAA (which isn't that blurry at all, unlike some other FXAA implementations), Driver FXAA, or SMAA/SweetFX.

Edit: Wait, I think there are some SGSSAA bits somewhere in this thread.

Do we have a list of the post processing switches? I saw a few of them over the course of the thread but I'm not sure if that's all of them or not. Also, how did those get figured out?

Okay, so I started trying to run it on the following specs:

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad
3GB RAM
HD6850
Windows Vista 32bit
1449 x 900 monitor

Framerate is certainly better than the Xbox version but still pretty bad once I reach the starting village. This is in DX9 with most settings on high and all AA turned off. The framerate doesn't change much when I switch to medium.

Is it true that running in DX11 with the fancy effects turned off improves performance? Is there some kind of low-range ini someone's written up that I could start with? I'll settle for 30fps if it's stable.

Are you running at 60FPS constantly? Have you tried enabling the MaxFPS="60". I used to have stutter before changing some settings in the config, why don't you copy and paste this over your config settings and give them a try?

If you don't have a 670 or better I would change the Resolution X & Y so you aren't downscaling. You should also download SweetFX for some SMAA goodness.

Wow your config file is amazing! I went from 30 FPS at all times to 60 FPS at all times at 1920x1200 with the current specs:

Intel Core I7 2600K
Nvidia GTX 570
8 GB RAM

Has anyone seen this happen before? The framerate tanks and I see these random walls of glitches appear in the distance.

It has happened twice so far, about 2 days apart, seemed to start after the 1.02 patch and the only way to fix it is to exit / reload farcry (GTX 480 w/ 310.70 driver).

Is the 310.70 beta drivers worth it? Currently using 310.64 and get 45fps - 60fps on high, vsync on, no msaa, DX11 running a GTX670.
Ahh, I'll update anyway!

I have been getting weird issues with the water reflections since the latest 1.02/new nvidia driver... it sometimes looks like the reflections are stretched too much. Hard to explain.... will take a screenshot later.

Playing with all settings on Ultra sans postfx which is on very high.

Anyone else?

anyone else's Steam play timer not updating correctly with this game? I've played for close to 20 hours and Steam says that i've only played for 5.4 hours. I think it has something to do with the Uplay interface.

Everything on low settings and 1080p resolution can't get past 25 frames per second with my 650m gt. There are many benchmarks that say it can reach 48fps on medium 1080p

Not sure, the game is rather picky it seems. I have a 660m running @ 1080p medium and low postfx and get like 55fps give or take.

I do know if you turn off Steam overlay for FC3, it will not log your hours played in Steam.

Change the postfx under the Custom Quality section to ultrahigh so it matches the one in your custom postfx settings.

Just a little update. Instead, I changed the "id="ultrahigh" to id="low" since that's what my postfx is set to and now the settings change fine when under read-only. So thanks for that, I would've have thought to do that without your suggestion.

Is it just me, or is this game quite jaggy even with FXAA on? I've set it to 8 previously to test is out and it's still quite jaggy around the gun etc. SMAA set to ultra is the same deal.

Just purchased the game. Downloading.

690GTX, i5-2500k @ 4.7GHZ.

I imagine I can run the game max minus AA to achieve 60 FPS. Any other tweaks I should know about?

Unless you are doing some huge resolution, you should have no problem running max + high AA @ 60

I think it has already been mentioned in this thread but it is something which needs to be put in the OP. Setting PostFX to low gave me quite a sizable boost- but I still experienced minor stuttering / frame rate dips from time to time. Switching it off completely seemed to have eliminated any performance issues I had before

Follow these steps to disable the filter:

Run Far Cry 3 and set the video settings to “custom.” Exit the game.
Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3
Right click on GamerProfile.xml and select Open With -> Notepad.
CTRL+F and search for PostFxQuality. Set PostFxQuality=”false” and save the file.

Reporting in, Core i5 750, HD 5850, 4GB.

1080p Borderless Window

I get just around 30fps with everything maxed with HDAO, 8x MSAA, Alpha to Coverage Enhanced and 1 GPU Max Buffered Frames.

I have no idea what half those settings mean.

Any good tweaks that I should take into consideration?

I've messed with this game's video settings more than any other game since I built my machine in Jan 2011.

DX 11, Very High and AA 2x, I'm getting 30+ fps. Emphasis on the '+'. 60 in non-dense areas or indoors. DX9 seems to be missing sheen and depth on textures, so I personally can't go without DX11.

But here's the key - Widescreen letterboxed. Otherwise, I need to be on Medium for 30fps. This also makes the mini-map a perfect circle, meaning the game was made for 16x9 (consoles).

Nope. Can't do it. Even with just x2 AA it doesn't run at a solid 60. I used the very high preset, HBAO and x2 AA and it's running at a fairly consistent 60 FPS.

Is it just me or am I getting unusually good performance for my rig?

I'm reading what other people are achieving and this setup should be performing worse. Am I missing osmething?

Man I really wish you could turn off the non stop ambient and battle music without turning off the car radio music. Seems real weird that its all or none (and yet in the poker club there is music no matter what.)

Would you be able to expound upon this a bit? I'm not sure I'm following. Especially the last bit.

This game is a joke. Been playing y'day for hours and it freezed 2 or 3 times.

Been trying to play for over an hour now today and it freezes every 5 minutes after I load the save. I fought a Tiger 4 times now and it always freezes. Maybe the tiger is too much for the engine to handle ...

I will going to try to fast-travel and then travel back to that point, I hope that changes something and it won't freeze anymore. As if the game didn't make enough problems without that ... still running between 30 and 60 frames on my rig (i7-3770K, 16 Gig RAM, Palit GTX670).

Bought NFS-Most Wanted y'day and it's 60+ with everything maxed out (only reduced ambient occlusion -1) - just for comparision. I feel Far Cry 3 should run better.

I consider myself an official Beta-Tester now ;)
