Far Cry 4 PC performance thread

They look like fucking shit. I don't understand how anyone can think adding a ridiculous amount of haze over the entire scene is a desirable visual effect.

I think it adds a nice denseness to a scene. Without it it can look kind of empty at times but I don't like how it makes everything look washed out at times either

How much of that can be attributed to DX11's limited multithreading capabilities ?

Even watchdogs was better threaded and its stutter was not as bad (5-10fps vs 20fps) whilst driving around.

Also the Core 2 is at 100% from game launch, even in the intro, menu etc. Always ~100%.

That's a pretty poor showing, all things considered. Far Cry 3 is the same BTW. Get those clock speeds up.=)

So they didn't really try ? It's disappointing to see that anno 2014.

Quick question: anyone been getting random crashes? My game will freeze, but sound still plays in the background, and I have to kill it in task manager. I was messing around with the voltage on my 970s, so that is likely the issue...just wondering if anyone else has seen it so I can narrow the problem down.

You're not the only one. I had two of those crashes yesterday. Along with not being able to quick save the game at all and getting black screens after dying. This game is literally unplayable for me in the past several days. It won't save, it crashes if I try to save, and I can't advance in the game as a result. This game is a complete, fucking MESS.

I've unplugged every single USB peripheral on my system because that supposedly resolves the black screen issues....but nope, not for me.

It's mind blowing how a high profile game could be released in such a state. We shouldn't have to wait several days or weeks for patches to fix crap that should have been fixed during development. This is totally unacceptable...smh.

I get a freeze to white screen every now and then, but similarly to you I've been fiddling with the memory clock on my 970 and have attributed it to that.

I've been lucky enough not to experience too may problems with my overclocked 970 so far. One time the game decided to revert back to default config settings, but its been fine since. No crashes at all.

I've had the game crash where I've not been able to alt-tab out or ctrl-alt-delete to the task manger. So instead had to restart my machine. This happened after failing a mission/race challenge then loading it again, only to find once loaded I couldn't really do anything like fire weapons or move around properly, exit the game or get to the menus. Very weird and has happened a couple of times now. I have a 970.

I just got the game today and I just finished playing Far Cry 3 a few days ago.

I'm still on the first mission to get to the Bell tower after running away, but anyway I'm wondering, is the game supposed to look this dark? Like the part where you are supposed to climb up the rope, the cliff was literally just black. I couldn't even see the damn thing.

Running on quality setting: Nvidia with SMAA instead of TXAA.

It should not look that dark. Others in this thread have reported that issue

Scratch that... I just had the grey screen bug after finishing an outpost master challenge. Exiting the game and reloading resumed normally. It would suck to get stuck like that.

If you game at 1080p your PC should outclass the PS4.

With the emphasis on "should"... as it currently stands, the game is nearly (or completely for some) unplayable as we wait for Ubisoft to give us a working product.

If I could return this to GMG, I'd be tempted to pick up the PS4 version instead. At least it's playable.

Anyone know how to disable the slight auto aim with the mouse aim that occurs when ADSing close to an enemy?

Are you sure what you are feeling isn't just the mouse acceleration? I also thought it might have had some aim assist left over from the gamepad (like Watch_Dogs) but I made sure everything relating to aim assist was turned off and did some testing on enemies. I found that it still felt bad but it was not due to slowing when near an enemy, but just because when fine aiming you generally move the mouse slower and the insane amount of mouse acceleration present meant that would slow down the cursor a lot.

PS4 version looks great. Will prob pick up a pc copy for the visuals later in depending on digital foundry results and if they ever fix the stuttering.

I haven't played it yet, but from watching videos, I think they add a lot more in motion than they do in screenshots.

The console version's 'god rays' is a proper, crappy looking blue haze, on the other hand. That looks bad.

Wondering if I'd get better pefromance on my PC or PS4.

i5-3570K
8 gig ram
GTX670 2gb

I have the exact same hardware. I play with these settings (with a little overclocking on the GPU) :
Display resolution : 1920x1080
V-Sync : on
motion blur : on
textures : high
shadow : medium
Post FX : medium
Geometry : low
Vegetation : high
Terrain : high
Water : high
Environment : high
Ambient Occlusion : SSAO
Anti aliasing : off (applying FXAA via NVidia control panel)
Godrays : off
Fur : on
Trees relief : off
Triple buffering : on (plus max pre-rendered frames set on "1" on Nvidia cp)

I've also added GPUMaxBufferedFrames="1" in GamerProfile.xml

Game is running 60fps most of the time with some hi cups when loading a new zone. I am pretty happy with performance on my rig. I guess i could fine tune my settings and overclock a little bit more to lock it. Waiting for the patch to do it.

thanks! guess il get the ps4 version
Maybe hear from somebody who has a similar rig before trusting anything icecold says about anything ever.

Somebody with a 3570k and a GTX670 can run the game at 60fps with probably only very minor sacrifices in IQ compared to the PS4 version at 60fps. I wouldn't be surprised to hear you could match the PS4 in IQ/effects with your rig with slightly better performance. Or run it at 60fps with a few more setting drops. Or run with slightly better IQ/effects than the PS4 at 30fps.

a 660 is not providing a better experience in this title. maybe get a clue. he wont be able to run any of the nvidia effects or even the scaled up general pc options. he doesnt have enough horse power to downsample enough(at all in this case) to match the level of aa and temporal stability of the ps4s HRAA. its impossible for him to have an image at playable settings that looks as good as ps4.

Matter of taste I guess, I dig them quite a lot! Luckily we can turn them off (I think) on PC, eh? ;)

This is exactly how two out of my four sessions so far ended for me after about 90min. Not sure what causes it, CPU/GPU (4570/970) run at stock speeds. I wish there was a button for quick saving since because of these random crashes I tend to save... very often lol

A 670 can quite easily and is not miles better than a 660.

I would wait before jumping to conclusions is all I'm saying. Multiplats on consoles have not proven impressive whatsoever in comparison to similar-powered PC rigs.

I have played it and both versions of the godray setting are abhorrent. A hazy washout of the image that's applied to the entire scene, looks like shit. Disable it completely if you care about image quality.

Show me the evidence that says its *impossible*.

I'm looking at benchmarks and user experiences that suggest he might. Notice I say *might*, because I'm not so arrogant as to give conclusive statements about things I cant say for sure.

do you even have the game? on any platform? are you aware that HRAA isnt even an option in the pc version? that the smaa option doesnt provide great aa coverage while also being ghosty/glitchy? that the msaa option has lousy coverage and txaa is broken? the game also has stuttering problems as well.

Has the stutter been fixed yet? I really don't want to be running around on medium textures/disabled mipmapping.

Also does anyone else find that the enhanced godrays seem too foggy and cut in and out randomly??

The "ghosting" when using SMAA is another issue caused by Nvidia's recommended SLI bits (the other being crushed blacks). It can be fixed by switching to the Blood Dragon bits.

I've been following this thread very closely. It is far from a 'disaster'.

I am getting ~40 average with most of the setting at ultra except for water,
No motion blur , no god rays , AO - SSAO , anti aliasing - SMAA

Any further optimization tips.I want it near 60 fps, Thanks guys

And many people disagree with you. Obviously just a matter of preference.
Of course it's a matter of preference, just about every post processing effect is, my real hang up with it is that the godray setting is for whatever reason tied to some full screen color grading which is absolutely not to my tastes as opposed to just enabling light shafts.

Its funny. I had been getting black screen crashes and had been unable to play the game at all.

Today, I reinstalled all VC redist packs and verified files. The game booted.
Usb wasnt the issue for me...

I'm with you with the godrays full screen colour grading - it looks terrible and hazy. In fact, I'm finding that it cuts in and out in certain areas (the haziness) which is even more distracting. I definitely prefer just have the rays or even being about to adjust the density of the haziness. I also thought it was buggy considering how foggy it is.

Lower your textures if you haven't already done so, the game requires more than 2GB for ultra.
Aside from that you could try lowering geometry, environment and shadows.
