Far Cry Primal |OT| The Land Before Towers

Just a heads up, fire is your friend at night or anytime without an animal companion. Just light you club or spear and hold it out in front of you (not down or you'll set the ground on fire) 95% of the wildlife will back down.

They will try and get you from behind though, the fuckers. Still, makes night far more survivable.

Just got a ps4 tonight with this game and The Witness.
I've never played a Far Cry game before but this one just looked really pretty to me and even though I'm VERY early in I'm certainly not disappointed with the atmosphere...awesome!

The ps4 itself has been giving us grief from the get go however, things download and everything is fine and then DNS errors pop up, then everything's fine again. Also, when doing the speed test, the upload/download speed are extremely slow. Been googling for answers all night but it still seems to be slow and finicky...are there any threads around here that address these issues?

Far Cry 4 was my GOTY, so my opinion may not mean a lot.

Far Cry Primal emphasizes hunting and crafting, and is more about exploring wilderness than doing missions that progress towards killing a bad guy. The story takes a bit of a backseat.

The poorly written story and dickhead unconvincing characters are what put me off the last 2 games. You make this game sound very attractive man

So is night in this game similar to Dying Light, in that the game gets more difficult with new enemies that use different tactics? Or is just harder because of limited vision?

Not really. Limited visibility makes it a bit hard but I have no problems in exploring at night. I've seen more wolf packs hunt at night though.

limited vision and a higher number of wild animals, i think.

Disappointing, but better than nothing I guess. Thanks.

Gotta say I'm pretty tempted to pick this up now. I had completely written it off when it was revealed but after Assassin's Creed: Syndicate won me over on AC games (and I was done with Ubi's crap before that) I'm thinking this might do the same for Far Cry.

Maybe people think this is just a "small" add-on like Blood Dragon ?
I guess? Does that have to do with it being such a quick release since FC4? Maybe they should've just waiting on releasing the game for another year so people would take it more seriously lol

This is actually my favorite far cry yet!

Yes. It hasn't been heavily marketed (holidays etc.) and the concept of a game set 20.000 years BC from a series which was set in 2000-2010s with lots of guns and vehicles is something you don't expect.

I can see why this game didn't review all that well. The combat is mediocre, story is weak with completely forgettable characters, it sorely lacks any sort of dynamic weather and the game has a metric shit ton of things that a lot of people would classify as "busy work". Beneath its wondrous graphics it's still very much a typical Ubisoft open world game, only this time the crafting focus has been turned up to 100.

However, what it does well it really does well. The graphics and atmosphere are off the charts. Oros is an incredibly well realised setting with vast areas to explore and dangerous wild life inhabitants around every corner. If you're the type of person that loves scavenging for supplies constantly and being completely immersed in a new world, then you'll probably love FC Primal.

It's not to Dying Lights level, but it is much more difficult (playing on hard) at night depending on what area you are in, and it certainly ramps up the tension. So much so, that I find myself running to campsites to start a fire and sleep through the night when I seen the sun start to set.

The females in this game are fucking gorgeous.
I am absolutely in love with the setting. Night time sounds/glowing eyes :D

new patch info

http://www.gamezone.com/news/far-cr...fixes-tweaks-and-adds-new-expert-mode-3434141

The day one patch brings stability to the games performance, improved wildlife AI, and improved gameplay animations. Alongside the plenty of other fixes & tweaks the patch brings, the biggest one might be the new Expert mode.

For players who want to really want to feel like their in the stone age, you could choose 'Expert' for your gameplay difficulty, which causes the players health to be cut in half, reduced aim assist, and makes the AI shoot 1/3 faster. To get the full list of challenges Expert mode brings, plus all the tweaks and fixes, check out the full patch notes down below.

Expert Mode Changes:

Players’ health has been halved compared to Hard difficulty.
Reduced players aim assist.
AI shoots faster by 1/3
Enemies in combat are not shown on mini map by default (they appear only if they are tagged).
It takes the AI a longer time to “forget” you when you hide
The aim assist box is reduced for several weapon types (bow, club, spear)
The player damage is reduced
Other Fixes:

Stability & Performance
Optimization and stability have been improved
Improved lighting
Weapons & HUD o Improved reticle display
Wildlife & AI o Improved beast companion behavior o Fixed rare animation issues o Improved visual of the mammoth when it destroys objects o Improved animal fighting behavior when triggering a fight
Design & progression o Tweaked and balanced XP rewards o Tweaked the damage ratio of certain recipes o Improved overall balancing
Gameplay o Improved animations of weapons on fire o Fixed issues with lit weapons during cinematics at night o Improved player navigation and small collision issues o Improved camera transition and minor collision issues on cinematics

I'm pleasantly surprised with the game so far. Given, I am still very early into it.

I dig the fact that they cut out a lot of the fat from the previous two games by not having an epic fuckton of shit to constantly stop and collect. I feel like Primal is a bit more focused.

The setting is great and I love the Apocalypto-styled storytelling in a different language with the subtitles. I'm intrigued by the story so far. The way the game opened was very cool too.

The graphics are pretty damn impressive. Some of the lighting effects at night and in caves with the torches are very cool. Upgrades are plentiful and skills are fun to collect. I like the focus on primitive weapons too and using the wildlife to your advantage.

Can't wait to play more.

Absolutely depends on 2 things. Difficulty and lack or using the hud.
Without the hud you can't see enemies unless you...you know actually see them:) Or hear them. Difficulty means they will do more damage and you will have less to give. At night the number of packs and spawns is dramatically increased in hunting areas and it can get downright insane at times.

Without a doubt the minimap being off is a gamechanger

Guys, seriously... just turn it all off. Tagging, minimap, detection, crosshair, etc. It plays fine.

It's such a relief not having nine million indicators flashing everywhere. I even turned off interaction icons lol (though I dont necessarily recommend that until you know the game)

Pretty much find myself turning more HUD elements off as I get to know the game. The minimap is a hard one though as the game pauses with the big map. If there was a map that the character held up or something in real time that'd be useful.

It's more immersive breaking having to pause the game. Really only like doing that when upgrading skills.

I wish they would find a way to incorporate these vision modes differently. Sometimes I find myself playing it too much with it on, missing out on the beautiful colors.

Since with Tomb Raider.

Agreed. I assume a mod will be done for the PC fairly quickly to remove the desaturation

IIRC the at least FC3 and FC4, there seemed like there was more patrols/enemies out and about..seems like the same here except it's wildlife...

One thing I find a bit frustrating and this was in FC4 as well, I am hunting for animals, bears in this case. I look on the big map where they roam, but I just can't find them here at all. All I see are shitloads of goats, boars and Wolves. But there should be bears here.

Make sure it's day... and you have to actually hunt the area for a bit sometimes.

Absolutely fucking loving this game
I can't believe how well they refined all the traditional far cry systems
Definitely my favorite far cry so far
Just wish they would include some type of ridable flying animal after you beat the game or something
Even just say fuck it and include the wingsuit

Having the
cave bear
is like having a fucking tank follow you around everywhere it is glorious
Come at me now you asshole prehistoric elk

If you look at your map, you will notice some animal icons disappear at night. Then they reappear during the day. They actually have their cycles.

HHmmmm, on the big map you mean? I did see the bear icon on the big map. Don't know about minimap, because I just disabled it. I actually disabled it all after Karak and someone on this page recommended it. The only thing I have on is the reticle and I might change that but since some of these animals are anything but easy to kill, I might keep it like this, haha. Oh and on screen controls, interaction prompt, found items readout, crafting indicator and collectible updates are on. But all else is off. Let's see how this goes.

I really commend developers when they put so many options in their games. Witcher 3 and The Division come to mind as well.

I read in a review that certain missions have you following trails of animals using Witcher-style vision.

Is it possible to follow those trails without using the Witchery vision or is that the only way?

I really wish this were an option for the other difficulties.

I like having the mini map on so I can see where I put my place markers at in the world while having the markers in the 3D world turned off. I really dislike that enemies automatically pop up on the mini map.

Depends some things require the vision but sometimes you are really just following a blood trail which is visible without it

My only real complaint is the lack of a dodge/sidestep button. Melee fights are always a lot of clumsy and awkward spinning in place.
Yeah, a dodge roll or something to get out of the way of charging animals is sorely missed. You cannot outrun or dodge them when caught in the open. You stand and fight, or you die.

It never "requires" vision. Footprints are tricky but are always visible. There's a weird graphics thing going on sometimes though where the decal is hovering just above the ground.

I don't think you can man. But I love how hurt animals actually leave bloodtrails and when you follow it, you'll soon either find them running away or their carcass.

In FC4 if you used a grenade on wild animals or a molotov, their skin would be damaged and of no use. While realistic, I never really liked it and it more hurt my enjoyment of the game. It's great that this is not in Primal. So use them fire arrows on them beasties guys, no problem.

Ubi's games are virtually the exact opposite of mod-friendly, however Far Cry 4 has an "immersion mod" that disables a number of visual aids, so I'd say the chances of someone being able to disable the desaturation effect are quite good.
