Far Cry --> worth it?

It was time for a new pc system (I had a AMD 900mhz Geforce 2 etc) ... I bought HL² without a doubt.. I never been up-to-date when I knew there was no chance to play those PC games but FarCry looks attractive.. is it worth it? I heard some people on this board saying it has no special gameplay, just average/basic gameplay....

It's great, much better than doom 3 IMO. Not up to the level of half life 2 tho. It has vast beautiful jungle environments and some nice combat with enemies. One of the best PC games this year.

It's as decent an FPS as any released this year bar none. Some love it, some hate it, most like it. I suggest that you try it..

I hated some of the later bits....but first impressions are grand. There are some really cool things you can try and obviously it's very nice looking.

If you get it as a birthday present, like I did, then hell yeah it's worth it. :)

But seriously, I enjoy the game. It's way, way, way, way, way, way, way better than Doom 3.

Yeah it's a decent game, it has its problems but then so do doom 3 and Half life 2. It really couldnt' hurt to give the game a whirl if you finished half life 2 allready.

I didn't care for the single players game, but I've had tons of fun with Far Cry deathmatch at LAN parties, so it was worth it. Plus it's a great graphical showcase to show off a new card.

I got it free, twice (present + pack in with something).

It was worth the play time. Very fun and challenging in the begininning. Trying multiple routes and tactics makes for good replay. Didn't bother finishing it, but was worth the romp anyways.

I don't know whether to be proud that it's catching on or miffed that you beat me to it.

Far Cry is not an enjoyable game. For all the huge and lush environs, the detailed vehicles, and best graphics to be found anywhere, the game's weapon balance and AI sucks all the fun out of it.

It's just stupid to unload a whole assault rifle clip into a guy's chest and he walks away. It's annoying for both your life and armor bars to be instantly drained if a trigen just lands near you. You can get some kicks by sniping guys a mile away but as soon as you get into the close combat the damage modeling turns the experience into shit.

You know, in one section I manned a minigun in a tight corridor and cut down over a dozen mutant monkeys, including a mutant who was constantly firing rockets out of one arm. Several explosive barrels went up in flames during this long and loud encounter. When nothing more was moving, I began to walk down the hallway. I passed a door just a few feet from the mounted cannon, and as I did a voice was heard to say "Did you just hear something?" And then three assholes come out of a small, adjoining room. All the gunfire and explosions didn't spook them, but my soft footsteps made them wonder just what the fuck was going on out there. I opened up on them, point blank, with an automatic shotgun. After ten shots, the clip ran dry and two of the troops retreated slowly back into the room. Do you want to play a game with mechanics like that?

The gameplay is incapable of suspending your disbelief in any way; it's just too stupid. Be smart enough to pass it up.

ArcadeStickMonk is right.

The gameplay and AI is amazing outdoors with humans only.

When you get indoors and when the mutants start coming the game breaks completely.

Had they concentrated on just humans and tweaked the indoor AI complaints, the entire game could have been one worth remembering.

Too many break the keyboard WTF moments, even on normal.

The AI outside is just as broken as what's found inside. Running on an engine that models expanses unmatched in their beauty, Far Cry is an empty game, a brief meeting with an exquisite world that is almost immediately soured by inconsistent AI and unforgiving mechanics.

It is one of the worst first person shooters to be released in recent memory.

Trust me.

With comments such as 'It is one of the worst first person shooters to be released in recent memory' in reference to Far Cry, anyone who trusts you is obviously an idiot.

It's that bad. I've played just about every FPS released, on both platforms, and Far Cry is a dull, tepid Halo clone. That's my opinion, after playing it extensively.

Do you always play bad games extensively?

Far Cry is one this years best pc games imho, and even the haters must admit that a fps shooter with some freedom is rare these days.

I liked the game a lot. Pretty immersive. The end feels tacked on.

It's nothing like Halo. I hate Halo.

I played the demo and the AI was dumb as a post. Is the AI in the full version better somehow?

Also do the humans in the full version shout stupid one-liners at you like in the demo? Like "I'm gonna kill you bitch" or whatever it was they said-- I can't even remember.

The demo was not indicative of the final in regards to AI.
They didn't get any smarter. Read my example posted above, man! That shit happens every time you play that part!

As for the Halo comparison, give it up, man!

I haven't really been able to play this game on my personal computer, but that's some funny shit. :lol

The AI is dumb if you have less than a 2Ghz machine (unfortunately also if you have an AMD, FC doesn't know about the + rating so you need a ~2800+), you can override that via command line but i forgot the setting. I'd also recommend not turning Auto AI on and not playing on EASY.

Most interesting thing about the game is that you can clear rooms etc. in several ways, like in that one room with cages. You could just kill all guards and then kill all monsters inside the cages (what i did first) or sneak up the stairs and press the switch to release the monsters ... and have the guards taken care of. I actually reloaded a few things to try out different ways.

And visually it's just great, although a bit too shiny sometimes.
