Soundgarden - Spoon Man
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Michael Jackson - Will You Be There
REM - Losing My Religion

this reminds me- the MJ song 'who is it' is also on my list somewhre ... let's put it at 4.5'
and another 'closer' lover.. i haven't been able to stop listening to it since about 1997 :D average once a day since then... GOOD LORD

Eagles - Desperado
Queen - Somebody to Love
Beatles - Let it Be
Boston - Peace of Mind
Chicago - Make Me Smile - or - Colour My World

It changes all the time though.

On Boston-

"November 8, 1986 "Amanda" becomes BOSTON's first US chart topping single, and stays at #1 for two weeks"

Really hard to choose. I'll go with these:

It's really fantastic, as is the entire Downward Spiral album. If I could have one CD from the '90s, it would probably be that one, over even Soundgarden's Superunknown. It's completely out of place on my list though, we've got these nice fluffy happy songs, and then we have I wanna fuck you like an animal :lol

Smegging smeg of a smeg!
This list is definitely subject to change, but thinking about it now:

1) The Fall - Hip Priest
2) The Damned - Plan 9, Channel 7
3) The Who - Baba O'Reilly
4) Pink Floyd - Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun
5) Shellac - Wingwalker

First, I have to give props to some of the songs mentioned so far, especially "Ambulance Blues," "This Is A Low" (my favorite Blur song), "Lover, You Should Have Come Over," and "California Dreamin'"

OK, here's five with arbitrary restrictions so I can even MAKE this list:

a) Has to have personal meaning for me
b) Had to have been played a LOT over the years
c) Has to be something in the more typical singer/songwriter/band genre, rather than electronic music
d) The list is in no particular order

1) Radiohead, "Let Down"
2) Big Star, "Way Out West"
3) Bob Dylan, "Not Dark Yet"
4) King Crimson, "Starless"
5) Counting Crows, "Round Here"

(Holy crap...that's a depressing list. I had no idea.)

This changes so much...

that I might as well just list my fav 5 songs from my b-day party - 8 years old - in 1982.

1) The Tide Is High - Blondie
2) Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
3) 21st Century Man - ELO
4) Dancing Queen - ABBA
5) The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

Cyan mentioned "The Gambler" and suddenly I was eating cake over 20 years ago.

cheer up -jinx-. make a list from when you were 8. Happy Times!

Man, probably the hardest thread ever, especially since a lot of the songs have particular emotional values attached to them.

In no particular order:

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Björk - Bachelorette
Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - Don't Give Up
Coldplay - Trouble
Deftones ft. Maynard - Passenger

Crag Dweller

First, I have to give props to some of the songs mentioned so far, especially "Ambulance Blues,"

edit: kudos to whoever picked Ambulance Blues. I fucking love that song. On another day, it might've made my top 5.

Glad to see some appreciation for this song. You guys have extremely good taste, and damn Jinx I would of never thought I'd see a King Crismon song in this thread, especially from a forgotten gem like that, good going.

1. Jeff Buckley - Lover, You SHould've Come Over
2. Sonic Youth - 'Cross the Breeze
3. Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
4. Daft Punk - Digital Love
5. The Flaming Lips - Feeling Yourself Disintegrate

Subject to change, obviously.

edit: see.. it just changed!

again!

Not my favorites but some classic songs i dont think anyone has mentioned:

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
Carry On my Wayward Son - Kansas
Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull
House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Space Oddity - David Bowie

1. Neutral Milk Hotel- Holland 1945: Just the greatest upbeat song I think I've ever really heard, so bizarre but incredible. Some great lyrics as well. I listen to the whole album just waiting for this song.
2. Nico- These Days: After hearing this in Royal Tenebaums, I fell in love with it immediately. One of the prettiest guitar parts ever.
3. The Beatles- Cry Baby Cry: Just a great song, always sounds good each time I hear it.
4. Beck- Static/Diamond Bollucks: Such a diverse, changing, brilliant song. Combines almost all that I like in Beck's music into one song.
5. The Flaming Lips- The Spark that Bled: So many different parts, all good incredibleness.

I'm not even going to try and pretend to be diverse really. I'm a Smashing Pumpkins addict through and through, and there's virtually no artist or songs that have seen as much playtime or had as much resonance with me than they have. So, you'll just have to excuse the overlapping....but that said, I listen to a metric ton of music in recent years, not just SP. GAF is only expanding that.

1. 1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
2. Perfect - Smashing Pumpkins
3. In the Arms of Sleep - Smashing Pumpkins
4. Song for the Dumped - Ben Folds
5. Solitary Man - Neil Diamond

I don't need a pyschologist to tell me what all this means by the way :) Time to dig through everyone's lists and start the sampling and downloading....and the inevitable purchasing.

Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
AFI - "Morningstar" (afi haters stfu)
The Beatles - "For No One"
Bright Eyes - "Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh"
The Cure - "Just Like Heaven"

I have a very odd list:

Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco
I Think I Love You - David Cassidy
Sympathy For the Devil - The Rolling Stones

-----------------
Just missing the cut:
Nothin' in this World Can Stop Me from Worryin' 'Bout That Girl - The Kinks
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
The Union Forever - The White Stripes
Should I Stay or Go Now - The Clash

Underworld - Born Slippy
The Pixies - Where's my Mind
The Prodigy - No Good ( start the dance )
The Streets - Blinded by the Lights
N*E*R*D - Rockstar Jason Nevins mix

For the sake of thoroughness I'm going to keep this to one song per band, otherwise it would be all Pain of Salvation :lol

1. Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element - Quite possibly the most moody rock song ever written. Dark, Enchanting, and incredibly beautiful. It is, for it's 10:09 duration, entirely captivating and attention grabbing. (also...I'll add that "Her Voices" has the greatest ending in music history. There is simply no comparing with this band. NOBODY is close.)

2. Dream Theater - Learning to Live - Still probably my favorite song of theirs, moving, inspiring, and bringing together all the best elements of their music.

3. Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata, 3rd movement. Simply the greatest virtuoso piano song ever written.

4. Iron Maiden - The Trooper - Seriously. It just owns. It's just so much fun. From the opening melody you know it's something special.

5. Liquid Tension Experiment - When the Water Breaks - Best instrumental rock song ever.

i'll made two lists, one from the songs i grew up listening to, songs that have nostalgic value to me, songs that it'd be unfair to ignore them now because my tastes have changed.
and another from the songs that have sentimental value to me.

1)
led zeppelin - stairway to heaven
eagles - hotel california
the doors - when the music's over
pet shop boys - heart
simon and garfunkel - scarborough fair

2)
the smiths - heaven knows i'm miserable now (this song was written for me)

the cure - lullaby (i want to have hot sex with spiderman)

the london suede - everything will flow

"See the blue suburban dream
Under the jet plane sky
Sleep away and dream a dream
Life is just a lullaby"

can lyrics actually be any better than that?

new order - the perfect kiss (no, i dont want to have a creepy sexual relationship with a friend and get murdered by him/her one night.)

the organ - basement band song (i'd pick all of their songs, but i chose this one)

I'm not going to berate you for liking Beethoven - anyone who even loads classical music up in their playlist gets some respect from me. (I don't even mind that you call it a song, although there are no vocals) I've played this sonata since I was 8. It still thrills everyone whenever I play it. But if you could be open to suggestion, there's loads of virtuosic piano music out there which can rival this movement for sheer thrills. Let me just give 5 suggestions, in keeping with the spirit of this thread (along with pianists who pull them off incredibly well):

Chopin: Etude in C-sharp minor, Op. 10, No. 4 (Maurizio Pollini)
Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major (Gyorgy Cziffra)
Scriabin: Sonata No. 5, Op. 53 or Etude in D-sharp minor, Op. 8, No. 12 (Vladimir Horowitz)
Schumann: Carnaval, Op. 9 (Sergei Rachmaninoff)
Brahms: Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83, 2nd movement (Sviatoslav Richter)

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
I can't make a list, but I do know that my favorite of all time is A Perfect Circle's "Judith".

Cribbing jinx's guidelines because yeah, impossible otherwise.

Fiction Romance - Buzzcocks. Best opening riff ever.
Crime Scene Part One - Afghan Whigs - my last serious relationship lived and died to this.
Trailer Trash - Modest Mouse - cause life sucks sometimes.
All This I've Done For You - Husker Du - See above.
Water Wings - Superchunk - Uh, why not.

Ugh, this is impossible. I'd need 20 more slots.

Well, contrary to jinx's guidelines, my favorites don't have any particular significance or emotional tug (few songs, if any, do for me). They're just five songs that I never tire of hearing and probably never will.

Catherine Wheel, "Future Boy"
Neutral Milk Hotel, "Communist Daughter"
Mogwai, "Mogwai Fear Satan"
Beach Boys, "God Only Knows"
Elvis Costello, "Oliver's Army"

One of my favorite songs of all time was a Red Hot Chili Peppers instrumental called "Pretty Little Ditty" ... then those crackheads (can't think of the name of the group) ripped it off, and made a sample of it for thier one hit wonder "Butterfly".

Ruined it for me. :(

Fuck fuck fuck. I forgot about Iggy Pop "The Passenger". It's funny cause whenever I play it for friends, I always mention it's cemented in my all-time top 5.

1. 11 AM-Incubis The way the lyrics flow through the song is awesome, its a great song with great instrumentation
2. For Martha- Smashing Pumpkins- Beautiful, Beautiful song, gives me the absolute chills hearing it, great guitar and piano melodies
3. Sweet Mellisa- The Allman Brothers Band- A timeless song, the guitar solo is one of the msot memorizalbe things in all of music too me.
4. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin Anyone who doesnt know or respect this song does'nt

5. Here in my Room- Incubis A great song, kinda dark but its a catchy song.

This is pretty much impossible, but I'll try to give the five songs that I still crank in my car and scream (that's kinda how you sing when it's load) along to when I'm driving.

1. "Today" - Smashing Pumpkins
2. " California Love" - 2Pac
3. " Nutting but a G thang" - Dr. Dre & Snoop Doggy Dogg.
4. "Plush" - Stone Temple Pilots.
5. " Zero" - Smashing Pumpkins.

I could easily just list 5 Pumpkins songs and feel good about it though.

And there is one song that Pearl Jam did that I have always loved but could never remember the title too. I'm pretty sure the lyric topic has something to do with a women dying in a car accident. Not sure if that helps, but the song has always ripped me apart. So sad.

And we should all be allowed to put one MJ song by default that doesn't count towards our list. :) mine is Smooth Criminal. Loved that tune and that video.

AFI-days of the phoenix

WEEZER-my name is jonas

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS-under the bridge

LED ZEPPLIN-immigrant song

SOCIAL DISTORTION-ring of fire

what can i say? im young.

I like you already. Kind of surprised by the amount of SP love around here...and Ben Folds too. New album this year, as well as a remastered version of Whatever and Ever Amen. Heads up. I'd also recommend checking out Hotel Lights, Darren Jessee's (the BFF drummer) new band debut which came out last year; it's absolutely fantastic, albeit slower rock/pop.

And the the Pearl Jam song you're referring to is Last Kiss -- it's a cover of an old J. Frank Wilson song (thanks Google). The single actually has another really good cover on there, Arms Around Me.

That would be "Crazy Town". What album is that Pretty Little Ditty song off?

Top 5:

1. Powderfinger - My Kind Of Scene
2. Powderfinger - These Days
3. Live - I Alone
4. Live - Lightning Crashes
5. Live - Selling The Drama

Top 5 if it had to be a maximum of one song per artist:

1. Powderfinger - My Kind Of Scene
2. Live - I Alone
3. Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly
4. Silverchair - My Favourite Thing
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Friends

Ah so many songs left out... painful to make these lists! Need some Offspring - Gone Away, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, and Blink 182 - Adam's Song in there too. So this list isn't completely "solid".

Anyone that mentioned Silverchair get's my thumbs up! I bet you're all Aussies though.. ;p
