So the FBI released the summaries of their interviews relating to the Hillary Clinton email investigation today:

https://vault.fbi.gov/hillary-r.-clinton

This report is actually one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and we've been discussing it in PoliGAF chat this morning. I thought I would provide the link and also some transcripts of our conversation.

As with almost everything related to this investigation or any Hillary emails, the most notable thing here is the banality of every aspect of this. There is no evidence of deliberate wrongdoing or criminal behavior. But there's lots of evidence of kind of shoddy, poorly-considered IT choices, people being uncomfortable with technology, and generally Hillary just not being good with computers.

Here are some fun excerpts from the report, with commentary.

According to Cooper, in or around June 2008, a representative from Apple installed the Apple Server' in the basement of the Chappaqua residence.

passengerpigeon: apparently bill clinton actually got a guy from apple to install the server in his house
passengerpigeon: GENIUS BAR ENGAGE

Clinton initially used the e-mail addresses hr15@mycingular.blackberry.net and then changed to hr15@att.blackberry.net. According to Cooper, in January 2009, Clinton decided to stop using her hr15@att.blackberry.net e-mail address and instead began using a new private domain, clintonemail.com, to host e-mail service on the Apple Server.'

[10:17 AM] passengerpigeon: hillary's original email address
[10:17 AM] passengerpigeon: was hr15@att.blackberry.net
[10:17 AM] passengerpigeon: but
[10:17 AM] passengerpigeon: at least it wasn't yahoo
[10:17 AM] Sea Manky: aol.com
[10:18 AM] kristoffer: Why is it 15
[10:18 AM] kristoffer: Is it because there were 14 other hrs
[10:18 AM] redact: Vince Foster died on January 5th
[10:18 AM] kristoffer: Also lol at hr instead of hrc
[10:18 AM] kristoffer: @redact Holy shit, he did. Look it up.

'stated the Clintons originally requested that e-mail on the PRN Server be
encrypted such that no one but the users could read the content. However, PRN ultimately did not configure the e-mail settings this way to allow system administrators to troubleshoot problems occurring within user accounts.
[10:21 AM] passengerpigeon: apparently bill and hillary asked for the email accounts to be encrypted so that admins couldn't read it
[10:21 AM] passengerpigeon: and the admins got that request
[10:21 AM] passengerpigeon: and mysteriously
[10:21 AM] passengerpigeon: decided they didn't want to do it
[10:21 AM] passengerpigeon: so they didn't
[10:22 AM] passengerpigeon: also I guess they were afraid they wouldn't be able to reset people's passwords
[10:22 AM] redact: I mean, legit fear
[10:22 AM] redact: Could you imagine if Hillary forgot her password

Clinton stated she used a personal e-mail address and personal BlackBerry for both personal and official business and this decision was made out of convenience. 124 Abedin recalled that at the start of Clinton' s tenure, State advised personal e-mail accounts could not be linked to State mobile devices and, as a result, Clinton decided to use a personal device in order to avoid carrying multiple devices.1251I
[10:22 AM] passengerpigeon: hillary decided to use a personal email account
[10:22 AM] passengerpigeon: because state offered her a blackberry for her state email account
[10:23 AM] passengerpigeon: BUT
[10:23 AM] passengerpigeon: she wasn't allowed to read her PERSONAL EMAIL on her STATE DEPARTMENT blackberry
[10:23 AM] passengerpigeon: so she was like
[10:23 AM] passengerpigeon: fuck it
[10:23 AM] passengerpigeon: nobody got time to carry two blackberries

The FBI identified five iPad devices associated with Clinton which potentially were used to send e-mails from Clinton' s clintonemail.com e-mail addresses. The FBI obtained three of the iPads. One iPad contained three e-mails from 2012 in the hdr22.clintonemail.com "drafts" folder. The FBI assessed the three e-mails did not contain potentially classified information. The FBI did not recover e-mails from Clinton' s personal e-mail accounts from either of the other two iPads in its possession.

[10:24 AM] passengerpigeon: also there were apparently five hillary ipads
[10:24 AM] passengerpigeon: one of which had three email DRAFTS from 2012
[10:24 AM] redact: I want just one iPad
[10:24 AM] passengerpigeon: but none of which were used to actually send email
[10:24 AM] passengerpigeon: so she tried to write an email on an ipad
[10:25 AM] passengerpigeon: and was like
[10:25 AM] passengerpigeon: "fuck this"
[10:25 AM] passengerpigeon: "where's my blackberry"

According to Abedin, it was not uncommon for Clinton to use a new BlackBerry for a few days and then immediately switch it out for an older version with which she was more familiar.
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: THIS LADY IS OLD
[10:27 AM] Sea Manky: hahaha
[10:27 AM] Sea Manky: it's totally true
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: "huma I can't find my email on the new blackberry"
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: "I think it's gone"
[10:27 AM] Sea Manky: they don't have time for this upgrade bullshit
[10:27 AM] Sea Manky: they have shit to do
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: "no hillary, it's right there, go to the next screen"
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: "I think it's gone"
[10:27 AM] passengerpigeon: "can I just have my old blackberry back"

Clinton told the FBI it was common knowledge at State that she had a private e-mail address because it was displayed to anyone with whom she exchanged e-mails. However, some State employees interviewed by the FBI explained that e-mails from Clinton only contained the letter "H" in the sender field and did not display her e-mail address.

[10:36 AM] passengerpigeon: in other news
[10:36 AM] passengerpigeon: SOME STATE EMPLOYEES EVEN WORSE AT EMAIL THAN CLINTON
[10:36 AM] Sea Manky: oh dear god
[10:36 AM] Sea Manky: I'm dying
[10:37 AM] Sea Manky: WE'VE RECIEVED A COMMUNICATION FROM THE MYSTERIOUS, "H" AGAIN

Some slightly more shady stuff also happened!

In his e-mail reply, Powell warned Clinton that if it became "public" that Clinton had a BlackBerry, and she used it to "do business," her e-mails could become "official record and subject to the law." Powell further advised Clinton, "Be very careful. I got around it all by not saying much and not using systems that captured the data." Clinton indicated to the FBI that she understood Powell' s comments to mean any work-related communications would be government records, and she stated Powell' s comments did not factor into her decision to use a personal e-mail account.

[10:42 AM] passengerpigeon: colin powell literally says
[10:42 AM] passengerpigeon: "watch out"
[10:42 AM] passengerpigeon: "if anybody finds out about your private email account they would be subject to FOIA"
[10:42 AM] passengerpigeon: "so keep it secret"

How do I see the e-mail address of the person who e-mailed me again?

IT JUST SAYS H.

I TRIED EMAILING H AND GOT AN ERROR.

What's the weird unfunny commentary chatroom style in there? Are those from some kind of released transcript from the FBI?

I'm sorry but I don't buy the "she's an old lady how do I use computer" excuse. She's a lawyer, she's dealt with sensitive information for years. She's not stupid, and not your average Grandma with little to no electronic knowledge. Pants on fire.

She knows some things about sensitive information but that's entirely different than knowing shit about technology.

Read the report, maybe? Pants on fire.

The chatroom stuff is cool running commentary/clarification from fellow gaffers. Y'all haters. lol

Haha....how do these email thingies work?

CLINTON never deleted, nor did she instruct anyone to delete, her email to avoid complying with the Federal Records Act, FOIA, or State or FBI requests for information. Concerning the Congressional preservation request on March 3, 2015 for email and other records, CLINTON trusted her legal team would comply with the request.

So that's a wrap right? This should end it.

What makes think a lawyer working during the 70s knew shit about computers or email?

This email horse shit will never end, will it.

And what's with the obnoxious chat transcripts? Is that from these documents? They're not loading for me at all for some reason.

If you want to believe she is innocent it can certainly be read that way. But as the poster above you said, she is -not- stupid, she wouldn't be where she is in politics if she was just some aloof grandma. It's Hillary Clinton she is smarter and educated, she is just extremely careless.

This wouldn't even be a thing if she just said she fucked up years ago. We wouldn't even be talking about this.

There are two people who come out looking really bad here.

One is Powell. He actively suggests to Hillary that she avoids FOIA, something she does not do.

Second is the guy (the one who kept invoking his 5th amendment rights, now we know why) who was supposed to archive the ClintonEmail.com emails, didn't do his job for a year, then deleted them a week or so after the NYT article broke about her private server and then lied to the FBI about it.

The entire report shows her general incompetence with technology, which generally would be expected from a person her age. She's not an aloof grandma, but she obviously does not know the nuts and bolts of IT, or even email. Which is fair.

Clearly y'all missed the earlier email where Hillary emails Huma to ask her how to send smiley faces on her blackberry.

It could be bias, but I could EASILY understand how a smart person who is also old as hell would not be great with technology.

You guys think Obama or Biden know much about computers beyond basic operations? I doubt it.

There are plenty of older, very intelligent people who just "don't get" computers. They're not mythical.

Without getting too specific, I work for the wealth management division of one of Canada's top 5 banks. I can 100% absolutely guarantee Hilary's situation is believable. The new Blackberry thing is textbook. Even for younger people.

Put it this way, even the smartest of people only care about what they know, they have no time for technology.

Those chatroom transcripts are hilarious.

Edit:Oh it's not from someone actually working with her. Damn that sucks.

As someone who has had to do basic tech support for their parents, I don't really understand people who don't understand that smart, competent older people can be bad at technology.

Tbh, Obama could have avoided a lot if he never took that Snapchat filter where his head was in a turban.

OP i'm not sure anyone gives too much of a fuck about you and your polibuddies personal discussions about this. I'm not sure why you included it at all honestly aside from wanting to laugh at old people for being old.

I feel like we've been spoiled by the obamas the last 8 years.

Can you imagine Hillary doing snapchats or plank or embrace memes etc?

Old people and technology is as funny as cats and water.
To be fair, I'm pretty sure most kids right now would struggle to set up anything that's not a GMail/Facebook "enter your username and password" account on their phones as well. I'm pretty happy I don't have to remember which port to set my SMTP server to anymore.

What's with the ageist and sexist thread title? Also, Hillary was 60/61 when that system was installed.

Because someone who grew up in the 70s probably shouldn't be expected to have the most competent grasp on more modern technologies in ways that people who maybe grew up on email might?

Thankfully, if this president thing falls through she's got a sweet deal going with a Nigerian prince that should keep her going financially.
