There's always ways to suss out things, with direct misinformation and such, seeing what is parroted back from which side, but with the intelligence committee and the like, I really doubt that would ever happen.
I think it's just an unfortunate situation, having a higher-up so close to the person being investigated that there won't ever be anything conclusive, at least from Nunes' side of the equation.

Its a way to disguise data transfers as name lookup requests.
For example, if we saw a VPN connection or email transfers Trump<->Alfa bank, that would naturally set off alarms. But some name lookups? That's not immediately as suspicious.
