ATLANTA (AP) — Reported hate crimes against Muslims rose in 2015 to their highest levels since those seen in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to FBI statistics released Monday.

Civil rights groups had been raising concerns about an anti-Muslim backlash in the U.S. even before the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, late in the year. The reporting period covers calendar year 2015, but comes at a time of heightened tensions following last week's presidential election.

In 2015, there were 257 incidents of anti-Muslim bias compared to 154 incidents the prior year, an increase of 67 percent. The total is second only to the surge in hate crimes following the 9/11 terror attacks, when 481 incidents against Muslims were reported in 2001.

The increase could be due, in part, to increased reporting by victims as well as better reporting and tracking by law enforcement agencies, although the number of all law enforcement agencies sending their data to the FBI decreased about 3 percent between 2014 and 2015.

Overall, the number of reported hate crimes increased from 5,479 in 2014 to 5,850 last year, and religious-based hate crimes increased by 23 percent. Jews and Jewish institutions remain the most frequent target of religious-based hate crimes, representing 53 percent of all those reported. Crimes against Jews increased about 9 percent.

Not surprising. 2015 had some high profile terror attacks (Paris, San Bernardino) even before you consider the Trump factor.

Most right wing people I see on FB don't believe that any of this stuff is going on.

Basically this. I don't believe a lot of people are racist, but hoo boy, privilege is the name of the game this year. It dominated this election and it's the reason this stuff gets ignored. It then enables those who are truly twisted and racist to get a free pass for the things they do.

Take my parents, for example. They are extraordinarily kind and helpful people, donate to charities that help minorities, volunteer time at shelters, and have a diverse group of friends. But they simply think that the violence towards and lack of opportunity for tons of minorities, particularly blacks and muslims, is largely overblown and over-covered by the media. They simply don't want to believe that this stuff is true, and as a result, completely ignore it and exacerbate the issue.

It's as others are saying, we're post fact. It's impossible for me to talk to people about politics because people don't really want to believe anything they see in the news. The fact that all the pundits and pollsters had this election wrong has made that even worse. They'll never believe approval ratings, scientific studies, or even reports from the FBI like this again.

Why are we killing the Jews?

The Jews are arguably the most persecuted group on the planet. I mean if you think its bad in America go to the middle East and see how bad Jew hatred is.

These stats are still disgusting and will probably only rise now.
