FF7 on PS2 problems

I'm playing FF7 on PS2 with none of the enhancements turned on. Everything has been working fine, except after disc 2 there are some areas I can't get into, like the bone village. I just get a black screen, and a 'bzzt' sound if I hit a button. I thought it might be displaying the 'change disc' screen (although it displayed fine when I initially changed discs), but the same thing is happening when I try to enter the Ancient Forest, which is only accessable on disc 2 & 3. The discs aren't dirty, so that's not it. The PS2 is a pretty new (less than 1 year old) slimline.

Any idea wtf is going on?

Hmm. I began playing FF7 again last year on my PStwo but didn't get as far as disc 2 yet. I'm pretty sure I'm almost there since I stopped at the Gold Saucer. I hope this doesn't happen on mine since this is the primary reason I bought a PS slim in the first place.

I don't know, but I tried to play Grandia and it consistently crashed after 15 minutes. I read up and found out this was a pretty common problem with the game on PS2s, and I told that to the person I sold it to. He said not to worry, he had a PS1 as a backup. So he mails me back and says he loves it, and claims he played it for 9 hours straight on his PS2 without a hitch...

Yeah, Grandia crashes a lot, it wasn't untill the second disc for me that it got better about it. Losing up to a hour of work was a pain in the ass though.

Alright, it happens on my PS1 as well. I don't know WTF is wrong. The discs are in perfect condition.

Did you buy it at an EB? It might be that they took old, nearly-destroyed discs and reconditioned them so that the surface looks like new. You will still be able to see scratches if you look through it, though.

Evidently they aren't.

Try switching the discs before going to one of the problem areas. Seriously, everything but the video is replicated on every disc, and will work fine. It'll just play the wrong bits of video if such a sequence comes up. If it works fine on disc 1, you'll know it's a problem with the later disc.

It's my friend's Greatist Hits copy. He beat the game using these discs, never mentioned this problem.

ouch. maybe we should consider playing the PC version.

Howevever, I hear that we can emulate the PSX with a decent pc + videocard setup. Any hints on doing this with FF7 ???

My International one would make Cloud turn into a graphical blob, then all numbers/letters would be graphical blobs until I reset..first time that happened was at the roller coaster tracks on the way to Coral town or whatever. I think it was doing it with no upgrades on, as well. PS2's just don't like this game.

Well I guess it IS the discs. Got into the forest with disc 1. Its bizarre because disc 1 is the only one with visible damage. Oh well.

I considered doing this before playing on the PS2. Any modest PC now can run FF7 with tons of neat enhancements and stuff, but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to run 100% without any glitches or imperfections.

Anyways, we confirmed the PS2 is fine and it's the stupid discs, so everyone can relax.

I don't think that's true, I've played it on my old PS2 and new PSTwo and it's been fine, and my buddy has played through my copy as well, on his PS2. Maybe international is different, but I've never seen any problems with FF7 on PS2 after easily 100 hours of play...

Oh and PC FFVII sucks, crappy MIDI FTL :(

Some folks made a patch or something so the PC version can use the PSF rips straight from the PlayStation game.

The OP poster has problems, I had problems, sounds true to me in my experiences. For everyone? I don't know/care. But it's glitchtastic on my PS2.

It's a disc problem, as I've said earlier.

Using 1st party everything.

Yes. Same shit has happened to me, but dvd movies. No visible scratches etc. but after a few years the player has problems playing it with artifacts all over the place. play it on another player and same problem.... :*(

I started a similar thread about this way back in June or so.

I had problems with the game on a brand new PStwo using a brand new copy of the game. The game would just freeze.

So, I went and bought another copy of the game (it was only $7 at Blockbuster) and that one worked great. I didn't go very far thoug so other disks might have problems too.

Anyway, I've since played other games on my PStwo and they all work fine.
