FFXI: x360 - I think I might be crazy

well I re-activated my FFXI account... and fuck me it brings my POS computer to its knees. (old workstation liberated from the office) Its a Xenon1.5 with a gforce5200 gfx card.

Since I re-activated my account I want it to at least look good and run smooth. So I was thinking upgrading my PC or getting a x360 just for FF.

so computer gurus... my machine can take a 2nd proccesor (could be liberated from another old workstation) I'm not sure if that would help it much though. If I just got a new gfx card would that run it well? Like a $300 one^^

Or there is the x360.. will it support a usb keyboard? Has microsoft said anything about VGA out? Will there be a x360 only server or can I use my account?

edit: and is FFXI going to be avalible at launch?

FFXI will support a usb keyboard. VGA out will be available as a seperate accessory at launch. You can use your account, no x360 only server.

I wonder if they'll be releasing an upgrade to the PC game with updated graphics at some point? Be a shame to waste the effort they're doing on the 360 version only, IMHO.

hmmmm...300 for a graphics card combined with a meh computer to run 1 game or 300 for a console that will destroy your pc gaming wise and play many other cool games in the future. hmmmm...

1UP: When the Xbox 360 version hits, will a patch be made available for PC players with high-end graphics cards to get similar high-fidelity graphics out of the game? The 360 version's character models look really nice, with deep shadows and rich colors.

HT: Yes, that will be possible, but the kind of video card you're talking about is extremely expensive!

FFXI - Xbox 360

Japan - 5.000 (3 years old ... PS2, PC)
USA - 25.000 (2 years old ... PS2, PC)
Europe - 50.000 (only 1 year old and only PC)

Hey thanks, Sangreal. It's good to know that they're considering that. I just can't imagine that a very late 360 version will get the kind of sales and penetration to justify the work they're doing on it. Unless they can transfer that work to the PC version, of course.

Anyone have a breakdown of the numbers of subscribers... PC vs PS2? I'm curious.

I'd probably wait it out until you hear more about the pricing plan for FFXI X360.

Unless you want to play only on weekends, you could possibly have to pay two subscription fees to play FFXI on the 360: the $50 yearly subscription to live, and the FFXI montly subscription, whichI believe is ~$13, right?

2nd CPU won't help the game. Better video card alone won't help you much either. So your option is either upgrade PC or get X360 and the game...

THat will be the 3rd time I buy the game. I think I'm the one that might be crazy.

I still even have my ps2 beta and beta hard drive that I never sent back.

yes when you put it that way it is kind of silly. If you can use a KB, a monitor, and your account then x360 +1

yeah live+ff fees would suck, but I am sure I would get some other games to play^^

you dont need to get the gold account to play mmo, I believe. You just need to pay FFXI's monthly fee...

Xbox Live Silver allows you to access mmorpgs.

FF11 isn't a launch game, and no one knows when it will be released. Don't count on playing it this year, I'd think.

This is somewhat true. S-E will however perform beta testing when Xbox 360 launches.

Just restarted playing this game for about a month now as I want to get a head start for the x360 version. The game can be found for $20 at most places that I've visited.

Will there be a x360 only server or can I use my account?

I'm wondering about this myself and also, will I be able to use my pc acct on my x360 machine? I'm guessing the x360 will make you go through some sort of POL menu as well?

The PS2 and PC games interact, no? I imagine that the X360 servers will also be linked...

They will all interact. FFXI is the first multi-platform online game (and that includes Xbox 360.)

And yes, you will be able to use your existing account.

*coughQuake3cough*

haha... True, but it IS the first console multi-platform online game. ;)

One of the problems with the PS2 version of FFXI (at least judging off of screenshots I've seen) is that the menus take up so much screen real-estate due to the resolution.

If you're playing this game on a X360, but not on a HDTV wouldn't the game suffer from the same problem, because I'd think they'd have to specially support SDTV resolution menus for this game to make them readable (I'd imagine downsampling from 720p may make some of the smaller menus unreadable). Does anyone know how this will be handled on the X460 version?

It will render at 480p instead of being downsampled from 720p. Atleast thats the impression I got from Tanaka's confusing interview. The menus will probably have the same real-estate issues that the PS2 version has.

>>>edit: and is FFXI going to be avalible at launch?

It goes into beta at launch.<<<

The latest interview says it's going beta in September. They're not waiting for launch.

Unfortunately, Square Enix hasn't released any per-platform figures.

I would think it'd be something relatively easy to track, though, as they could just keep track of how many users download each "version" of the updates (as PS2 & PC users get different updates). I'd really like to see a breakdown of this, myself, as well as a breakdown of subscribers per-region, but they don't include either in their "Vana'diel Census" updates... I guess they just don't find this stuff worth tracking, but apparently how many times people did the Tarutaru /panic is a totally different story!* ;)

*Note: They may or may not actually track this.

A little off topic, but what has changed in FF XI in the last say 10 months?
Quite a bit.

Chains of Promathia would be the biggest. While it hit earlier than your time-frame, it has been slowly 'unlocked' (so to speak) with each update, and recently wrapped up. So basically that enitre story arc has been added to the game, along with a whole bunch of new areas, NMs, and so on.

Another thing added is the "Fellowship Quest," where you can now get an NPC to play with you. They level alongside you, can help fill in empty slots in a party, etc. It also effectively changes "solo-ing" to "duo-ing," for the most part. There is also a new fishing system, which is more interactive, and helped kill off (the majority of?) fish-botting.

Um, they've also added a new vocal song to the soundtrack, ENM battlefields, a dedicated Ballista zone, etc. They've also tweaked quite a bit of the Exp rates for certain types of enemies, and made the overall Exp curve a little more smooth. PlayOnline received a pretty massive overhaul in functionality, as well.

...

I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I'm leaving out here, but I haven't played in a (long) while, so I'm not too up-to-date on everything... Maybe somebody else can fill you in on anything I forgot.

I quit back in January, but I read that they also removed the peacock charm, leaping boots and archer's ring (I think those are the three) from the NMs that used to drop them, and in their place, those enemies now drop EX items with similar stats. I haven't looked up the specifics, but I assume the original items are now in BCNMs or something?

>>>A little off topic, but what has changed in FF XI in the last say 10 months?<<<

The latest Chains of Promathia missions have added new areas and a new set of gods.
Ranged attack and accuracy got toned down. Those are the big ones.
Another recent, and sometimes comic, change is that if you try to using holding tactics on some NMs now, they'll grow in power until after a few hours they're the most powerful in the game. There's a great video of Simurgh taking 0 damage from decked out 75 melee, even on SATA. He's also doing 500-600 to PLDs and is attacking like a MNK 2HR.
Tons of new gear. Too much to go into really. One of my personal favorites as a PLD is a CoP mission prize ring that gives VIT +5, AGI +5 AND Enmity +3.

Is the xp a lot better?

I got to level 30 as a white mage and then like 10 as a summoner type (can't remember the name) and got utterly bored of the grind.

Sounds cool, is CoP really nice addition?

Yeah, the sellable versions are from BCNMs. The Ex versions are from the NMs. The NMs also have shorter spawn times. The items have the same stats, just different names, like Peacock Pendant and Empress Hairpin.

Definitely. I was kinda annoyed at having to buy gear for the level-capped missions, though.

Oh, I completely forgot. They made it easier to get from 50-70. Before 50 and after 70 are pretty much the same, though.

TAJ pretty much already covered it, but here's the information from the updates:
The amount of EXP required for leveling up after lv.51, and the amount of EXP lost when KOÂ’d after level 25, has been greatly reduced.
img02.jpg
Players are now able to earn experience from monsters of a wider level range than previously possible. Experience points earned by defeating “decent challenge” and “easy prey” monsters will also increase in some instances.

The last update added a personal NPC that makes soloing easier. You can lvl it, change its weapon, and customize its behavior a bit. You can only have it out 15-20 minutes right now, but they're going to extend that after evaluating the impact of NPC use. (with regard to both framerates/lag and balance)

That sounds sweet!

So if I was going to start over again what job combo should I shoot for after 10 months of nerfs?

For DD, I'd say BLM/SMN BLM/WHM, but they're talking about "adjusting" that. In a few months, the premier endgame DDs will probably be SMN.
PLD/WAR, NIN/WAR... RDM or BRD if your server isn't flooded with them.

SMN because of new summons coming with 360?
