The FFXI resurgence

I must have been chuffed to get the ability to ride a chocobo lol

Btw my in-game is Murdoch over on Asura, if anyone needs help or has questions. I'm thinking if there are enough people interested, we could get a GAF linkshell going too.

Great game I played it for many years.

It was the last one before wow neutered the genre.

Ah yeah, I think I know which part you're talking about. The quest for the Kazham airship pass required 3 keys, which would've been early on (level ~25 or so). Back then, that was a majorly painful undertaking.

If it's any consolation, they've made great strides in getting rid of tedious quests like those, and quickening the pace of progression. That quest in particular can be skipped entirely now by paying for the airship pass directly.
Yea that rings a bell. I remember getting some scarves in a Halloween event that allowed you to warp to the other two starting areas. I had those but obviosuly had limited uses.

There's two config tools if I recall, one for PlayOnline and one for FFXI. The one you're setting is for FFXI, and it still doesn't set the game to fullscreen?
I located the FINAL FANTASY XI Config executive file from the game's folder, changed the settings and saved them to no avail. I tried it multiple times: the saved settings remain in the config tool but do nothing for the game.

I played the game several hours in windowed mode with a very small resolution. It's cozy AND very hard to get into. I like it but have a hard time figuring it out.

Is it so that the player does not get any progression in the quests he is not having in the active quest list? If so that's one of things that are just so weird about this game.

Hmm that is strange, especially if the settings are saving but it's not being reflected when you launch the game.

I did a quick Google search, and it looks like there may be two FFXI configs, one for NA and one for EU. I'm not at home to check right now, but maybe see if you set it for the other region?

For quest progression, you should be able to make progression on any quest that you've picked up. I might be misunderstanding your question though.

Hehe there are actually three different config folders and tools: just "Tools", "ToolsUS" and "ToolsEU". The one that works is "ToolsUS".

Might be my fault but for some reason many of the beginner area quests did not progress for me even though I did many of the required things. Maybe I just had not picked the quests up yet.

There are bunch of things the game does not communicate to the player. Maybe it was easier back in the PS2 days when you had the user manual included with the game.

Chains of Promathia was peak FFXI.

Only having having a part time job and being basically NEET in late 2004 / 2005, while working my way through the expansion is one of my fondest gaming memories.

I wouldn't want to go back, though.

No, it wasn't. It communicated even less.

Lol that's annoying, I'm glad it works now though!

Yeah quest progression is really obtuse and confusing, in an old school kind of way. I actually play in Windowed mode specifically so I can have a guide up at all times.

This too. The upside of playing nowadays is that there are a lot of helpful wiki guides. Back then though, nothing had been written yet.

That was my prime FFXI experience as well.

Installing this game is about as enjoyable as getting teeth pulled. Squeenix's incompetence on full blast

I hope the game itself is good, I'm gonna sub if the 14 day trial goes well.

XI is peak Final Fantasy, great character, music and locales. There is a TON of content across multiple expansions that can be done solo or as a duo now if one does not have access to a full party. The "Trust" system lets you unlock npc teammates for all combat and support roles and those npc companions can rock. Get Shantotto 2 (dps monster), Apururu (healer queen) and whoever the fuck else and you can faceroll through content like a boss. You can do all main story missions across all the expansions, max your lvl, and a good portion of pre/early endgame stuff and adequately gear up.

Yeah even with the improvements they've made to the registration and installation process, it's still a pain to set everything up. That's why whenever I let my subscription lapse, I keep the game installed if/when I come back lol

What would be the reason to go back to this instead of playing ff14
They're very different games. Also...

Depends on if you finished all the storylines or not. It had some great story beats. The endgame is a real pile of hot garbage, but the ride there is great.
This is the real reason.

The stories in XI are fantastic, some of the best in the series. And there's 25 years worth of story to go through. Even if you weren't interested in endgame (which is mediocre and grindy) and only wanted to do the stories, it'd easily take hundreds of hours.

The stories are good and even the little quests where you venture out have to be planned out and always feels like a separate adventure instead of a checklist of things to do.

You needed consumables, gear, needed to buy a map to know where you were going or if you risk going in blind and having to map out everything internally. How to defeat each enemy and if it could be done efficiently or not. Whether you could fight them or utilize stealth mechanics to avoid entirely whether it's by walking instead of running or using invisibility potions.

Multilayered dungeons with different levels and different enemies that invoked the fear of death.

Traveling by boat taking time and could either be a peaceful voyage or a dangerous one where you fight monsters. No fade to black cutscenes here...everything ingame.

In XI you set your own goals primarily and work toward them and back then you had to work as a community to do stuff whereas now you have Trust Magic that serve as Party members in a similar manner that Dragon's Dogma Pawn system works though you could argue FFXI did it first!

Most expansions featured prominent NPCs that were the "hero" of the expansion and you the players were their prized fighter and companion ranging from characters like Prishe, Iroha, Arciela, Lilisette and more.

And the world was quite huge. And the image below STILL ISN'T EVERYTHING. Cities have their own maps and many more expansion zones do too!

I never played mmo's for stories, I play single player that are more focused on story for stories, guess that's why it doesn't make sense to me

I just remember it took so much time and patience to achieve/gain anything. IIRC, I reached a point where I needed to get 3 keys or something. I called it quits when I realised it was so early on and the amount of time and effort it took to get to that point. I was a BLM and then took White mage as 2nd job.
Edit: a pic I took. This was actually 2008. I must have been chuffed to get the ability to ride a chocobo lol

Familiar names. Was this on Midgard by an chance?

Wait, so is this game actually pretty good? Because at the time when it released I remember the reviews were pretty middling and it didn't seem that popular whatsoever. What MMO was dominating in 2002? EverQuest? Was WoW even out back then? You can tell I really know my MMO history.

Yeah before FFXI, EQ1 dominated. After FFXI came out in 2002, it ended up becoming more popular than EQ1, until WoW came out in 2004.

FFXI was an evolution of EQ1, and played like a hardcore, group-oriented MMO. It was a very difficult and time consuming game, which was a stark contrast to WoW's more streamlined, more casual approach.

What set FFXI apart, and what ended up being kind of revolutionary for the MMO genre, was its focus on story. Something that'd be incorporated in future MMOs.

It was a very good game for its time. A lot of the criticism was just general lamenting of a mainline FF being an online-only title, plus the steep barrier to entry for PS2 players: $100 game box + $50 network adapter + $15 subscription cost + USB keyboard.

Nowadays, the game is a lot easier, more casual, and a lot less time consuming. People are able to complete a lot of the content and stories solo, and the stories are very good. The cost is minimal now too since it's only on PC, the game constantly goes on sale for $10 with everything included.

Someone did their homework. Thanks for the info! :messenger_sunglasses: 👍
