Looks alright. If you told me this was released in 2001 I'd believe you.

RPGs just haven't been that impressive graphically for me this gen. The only two that impressed me were Final Fantasy X and Xenosaga Episode 1. I recently played Star Ocean 3 and thought, "Why does this look so much worse then FFX?"

...did they just like, add more polygons since it's one player and rip the engine right from FFXI? Those mandys are like straight rips! lol

Still cute though. :)

Good job on that comparison, Olimario. Even though a blind person could tell that these captures are complete ass, you're able to overlook this fact and attempt (key word) to troll the game with them. That takes some talent, man. Kudos.

They're Matsuno's favorite monsters from FFXI, so he decided to put them in.

He changed their aggro patterns, however, to fit along with the EvE (Enemy vs Enemy) scheme, so they'll aggro and engage in combat with certain types of creatures. Also, when attacked by you, I believe they'll link now too (where-as in XI, I believe only the black ones did).

Pretty neat changes, I think, and it's great to see them here for nostalgia alone. :)

Did they remove the feature where characters would graphically reflect changes in their equipment? In every shot I've seen so far, the characters all look the same. Maybe it only applies to weapons, or trinkets, or other such accessories. It's a shame, 'cause some of those outfits are BLECH.

In case people couldn't see through my stupidity...this is what I meant.

The mandy's being in this game is great IMO. They kicked ass in FFXI and, in general, never gave me any grief in FFXI which is more than you can say about any enemy in that game

What I would like, however, is for FFXII to ape some more stuff from FFXI...mainly the crafting systems (remove the obvious timesink tedium, tho).

we can thank all the "random battles suck" people for it. :(
Not really.

It's not going this route due to fan outcry, complaints, declining sales, to clone KotOR, or whatever other reason people like to make up for it. Instead, it's going this direction simply because Matsuno wanted to make a single-player game that utilized a lot of MMO aspects, such as the encounter/aggro systems, the psuedo-real-time combat, etc. He's said as much himself.

That seems to be the case, yeah. I haven't even spotted changes in weapons or shields in the screens released thus far, but maybe it'll be present in the retail release.

As long as they don't FFT:A-arize it...I fully support this notion for a PSP version of Vagrant Story

Scott, we do know that characters will be able to skill up multiple weapons, yet we have yet to see that aspect yet, correct? I'm assuming they want to keep much of the game underwraps so they won't be showing much in the way of equipment variation in PR pics or Demos.

JPN PLAYERS RAWK!

Im a huge FF fan so this is obviously my most anticipated game. I have been wanting this game for so long. Its taking forever to be developed. It had better be fucking good. Considering the delays, Square will have no excuses if the game is sub par.

This will be the first true single player FF for 3 or 4 years. Thats a long time to wait....its killing me. I live in PAL land....can I expect this game to come out before 2007?

Doesn't seem like it, though that would be great. The mandras are said to be aggressive against other monsters in that area and attack them on sight. Not 100% about this next bit but you are able to step into the fight when both enemies are weak and deal the finishing blows on both enemies while they are distracted with eachother.

I also remember hearing that the Madras in that area didn't attack players on sight and needed to be attacked first by a player to become hostile against your party.

How cute :b

As Wakune pointed out, it's an EvE (Enemy vs Enemy) scheme. Here's a bit of information on how it works:
Fone Coast, in contrast, takes place above ground, on a beach, complete with beautifully rendered sand and water. This mission requires that you kill a boss called Rock Eater. To make Rock Eater appear, you have to kill 3 "Slavunell" creatures. The game gives you the hint that the Slavunell creatures aren't too friendly with the puny Mandragora creatures (from Final Fantasy XI) and suggests that you let the two creatures fight each other first and then go in for the kill yourself.

One of the interesting dynamics we picked up on was the relationship between the different enemies on the island and how they affected each other's behavior. For example, you'll notice that tiny mandragora, small mushroomlike critters that were most recently seen in FFXI, will actually attack certain enemies on the island of their own accord. You can use this to your advantage, since the little guys tend to focus on the closest creature they have issues with, which isn't always you. So, if you play your cards right and don't attack the mandragora, they'll actually lend a hand at certain points in your journey.

Not to be too nitpicky, but the white mandies in Boyahda Tree (Mourioche) link, I certainly remember my misscast long ago as BLM there. Yipes.

But I'm all for FFXI mandies in FFXII... as long as they don't spam Dream Flower. ;)

Bad captures or not, the game still doesn't look good. Easily confused with FFX and FFX-2.

It clearly looks better. The biggest improvement coming from seeing it in motion since the animation is much improved over FFX and FFX-2.

Just bad blurry media from the 2 playable areas in the FFXII demo at the SquareEnix show. Seems almost like they were taken from a video that captured someone playing it.

Anyhow those two areas were empty boring bad choices to show off, the latest trailer looks phenominal and if they just gave official screens from that people would quiet down about the graphics :)

Not only does the game look a good deal better than X & X-2, it's also much more expansive in scale than anything seen in either of those games. The Calm Lands in either of those would likely be about 1/10th of an area in FFXII, if they're comparable in size to those in FFXI. Also, FFXII handles a lot more in these expansive areas than the other two titles, as there are no battle transitions, no pre-rendered backdrops (as X and X-2 use in certain locales), sophisticated AI patterns for both your allies (that you can customize with the Gambit system) and enemies (aggro schemes, as well as a new EvE element), etc. And yet despite all this, it still manages to look better than the previous entries (including XI).

...Yup, easily confused indeed. But only by you, and only because it fits your little agenda here.

Thanks for your brilliant contribution to this thread. We've really been enlightened

That was fucking stupid.

Don't make me post pictures of Tidus / Squal / _____ (insert any main chracter from FF)

I can't believe people are still bitching about this shit, but its the same people who are like zomg, its all downhill frm VII!!1 VII >>>>>>> IX >>>>> *I hate all of you*

I swear I must be the only person to never notice how metrosexual the main character is in JRPGs. I guess I just focus more on the environment when I play an RPG. The character looks bad, very bad...aye...but when I see screens where he isn't taking up the majority of the screen I hardly notice him as my attention focuses on the sky, ground, hud, enemies, etc

It's a gift

edit: Holy shit...never even noticed the link in the first post...some of those areas/enemies have never been shown before, right?

Those are some horrible captures.

Are these the first screens of Pannero in battle?

Can't wait to play this. I really like the battles against giant size monsters.

Whoops, I didn't see this edit.

From the impressions I read from the Square Enix Party, it sounds like they're set with a certain weapon type. Even IGN comments on it (from the same article I linked above):
Your characters can only attack from a fixed distance, dependent on the type of weapon the character uses. Vaan uses swords, for instance, so he needs to be close. Pannero uses arrows, so she can attack from farther away. If you force your character out of range of attack, he won't attack until you allow him to get back in range.
...but for all I know, that may only apply to the demo.

If you've seen any info on being able to use different kinds of weapons, though, go ahead and a throw a link my way, because I totally missed it.

Sorry. Those little cutscene screens have ALWAYS been much higher quality than actual in-game stuff.

screen_12.jpg

The in-game stuff really does look terrible and VERY low poly.

FF12 looks all right. I think Dragon Quest 8 looks better, though. And Rogue Galaxy. But then that would be because Level 5 >>> Square. :P

I think Oli wants FF12 to be as detailed as this

:D

It is still only the PS2. Can only do so much.
