FFXII

When is this game US bound? FFXII and Zelda 2005 are my most hyped games for next year, and I haven't really followed what's happend with FFXII. I am also hyped for Dragon Quest VIII if it sees the day in the western countries.

The game got delayed big time, probably Winter 2005.

Should be really good though

I also heard that this game will have multiple episodes like Xenosaga, FFXII will cover conflict of only one continent and the next episode will cover the events of another continent.

winter 2005? ouch. So it might even be later than Zelda. Seems like Square really want to polish this game, and who can blame them. FFXII seems twice as interesting as the previous PS2 FF games. (really liked the PS1 FF era)

Yeah, this will bring many new elements to the table also.

I like how they got rid of random battles and the crappy old battle system.

About time. Hopefully the voice acting is somewhat good too.

It's bound to ship next Spring in Japan, nothing more is revealed.

Hmm that means about 6-8 months extra for US in order to fix english voice acting and other translation issues.

Apparently the battle system ain't all that hot? I was following FFXII until E3 hit and it got lost in the shuffle.

"Matsuno mentioned in mag interviews that the story would focus on Vaan and Penelo, and added that the stories of Balthier and others may become the stuff for other games. This latter comment was made tongue-in-cheek, because the interviewer mentioned that Balthier was Sakaguchi's favourite char."

Good FAQ if you want more info on FFXII

FF haters will always hate the series no matter what.

The battle system is like KOTOR or FFXI (more like FFXI)

If anything, I think it may have one game with multiple episodes.

last time I heard the game comes on two discs, not sure of the purpose though.

Or like in case of FFX and FFX-2 pretty exactly 5 months.

That is such a bullshit. Sakaguchi hasn't mentioned anything about the desire to make spin-offs out of FFXII. Also the game's story is sure as hell not focused on Vaan and Penelo (=relationship or love of any kind) as main point. The main theme in this game is the will for freedom as the whole and _all_ of the revealed characters have connections to this theme in their (so far) explained background stories.

It's incredible how I loved turn based systems in the past, but now I really hate them.

All games need to evolve at some point. I used to love turn based system too, but it got really repetitive. I think the next big thing with RPG's is “action-rpg” (real-time combat) or whatever you call it (fable or Kingdom hearts)

So anyone who isn't impressed with the battle system [and was actually *at* E3, mind you] is a "FF hater"? I'll keep that in mind. What about anyone that doesn't like the story's premise? Can we shout them down?

Yeah, I know that much.

Read 1-UP's, IGN, Gamespy, or Gamespot E3 impressions. They are all positive.

There only some people on this forums who were saying negetive things about the battle system.

BTW Square Enix will obviously make some drastic changes between the E3 demo and Spring 2005.

GODDAMNIT! FFXII is *NOT* going episodic. WTF.

Gamefaqs is a CESSPOOL when it comes to bigname games with no offiical infoflow for long periods of time. You get threads asking if Vaan, Solid Snake or Goku would win in a fight and shit like that.

Seriously, FFXII is just delayed till 2005. No new info has come out. The game will NOT be a multi-episode thing. Sheesh. >_<

was it really delayed? Was there ever a releasedate for this game?

no actually.

By the time this was revealed, the public just starting to get the flow of DQ8 information, and both had TBA release dates.

Matsuno said it was definitely a 2004 game when it was unveiled. It was subsequently delayed to "Winter 2004 to Summer 2005" depending on the release plan for DQ8 and KH2. Since DQ8 has a Winter 2004 release date now, it's clear FFXII has been moved to early 2005, with KH2 to follow since Nomura said it would be out after FFXII.

So yeah, delayed.... technically. :)

For the most part, they are non-commital. They described - didn't critique. Well, I just checked out Gamespot's preview and they seem to like it a fair bit, at least.

You know, one awesome detail about the battle system is that the positioning (you can move them in the battles) of individual party members gives you advantages or disadvantages. There isn't supposed to be a real job system, but we will be have the freedom to work them out and lean towards some job-specialisied abilties and characteristics. So, for example, somebody like Fran with her bow and your weak supporters (=healer, mage) should be positioned in the back while the strong physical fighters should be in the front to block. That gives it a deeper and strategic touch. A MMORPG-esque vibe, I guess, just without annoying party search. Also, the few shown special attacks and Totema (summons) were UBERstunning. The effects overall have a real different look compared to those in FFX, they are significantly more dynamic and defined, they don't have the blurry look of FFX's ones.

It really does SOUND great. I was just curious how fun/exciting/interesting it would be in execution.

It was supposed to be the fall of this year, along with Advent Children or something like that. No firm release date though. I remember the EGM rumor section was talking about how FFXII and DQVIII could be done around the same time. So I'm more than a little suspicious that FFXII was only delayed to make room for DQVIII. It would give the developers more time to refine and add in new stuffs though, which is great.

But if the game is really nearing completion and delayed for that purpose, they can get alot of translation done with the almost finished game...here's me daydreaming, but a simultaneous launch would be great. They planned it for KHII, why not FFXII also. Even if not, maybe the in between wait time is shorter...

I've seen movies of the battle system from E3. What makes it different from the mediocre battle system in the .hack games?

That is such a bullshit. Sakaguchi hasn't mentioned anything about the desire to make spin-offs out of FFXII.

He doesn't even work for Square Enix anymore so I somehow doubt his input matters...

Yeah, seriously. Don't take any of your gaming news from the forums of a site where they don't even realise that Batman could kick Vaan, Solid Snake and Goku's asses all at the same time.

^^
I meant Matsuno, but my hand automatically typed Sakaguchi. In fact Wada's statement was that from now on it's up to the responsible producer whether a FF is going to get a sequel like FFX-2. In this case it's Matsuno and he hasn't mentioned anything about this aspect so far, neither yes, nor a no.

I'm pretty sure the biggest reason that it got delayed is so it isn't competing for sales with Dragon Quest 8. Given the choice between the 2 the japanese will always go with dragon quest.

I'm hoping though, that most of the time spent on FFXII now is spent making the new battle system work atleast as good as KOTOR's. FFXI's battle engine was crap, if the new game plays like that I don't even think I"ll rent it, judging from videos it seems closer to KOTOR though.

Since Matsuno had stated that the game was 100 hours or some obscene amount of gameplay, I wouldn't be surprised if halfway through we were thrust onto some past history or some other character entirely - who knows.

All I know is that judging by Matsuno and co's last game stories, FFXII is going to shit all over everything before it in the series storywise. Only need to reflect on the entire Battle Ogre series, FFT and Vagrant Story to know that.

Yeah, I rag on the gameplay sucking but the story concept sounds right up my alley. Which is why I'll be dissapointed if the fighting sucks. I mean you at some point in the game get to be an air pirate and possibly get to explore a huge world.. a concept that one of my favorite RPG's of the past 5 years used to great affect...

I just hope there's a return to "any character can use any weapon, and there's a bonus for unarmed combat" like FF II and V
