Justin got 9th at Shadowloo Showdown. He did better than I expected.

Not sure if there will be more or less international players at EVO, but not having an American in top 8 is a very real possibility depending on how things work out. Not that they are inherently worse, just that there are now so many killers across so many different characters around the world.

It won't happen, the illuminati will make sure the Japanese will fight each other and there's at least a few American players in the top 8. The seeding system basically favors the Americans and screws all the foreigners up.

I don't see how an all-foreigner top 8 is possible even without help from the illuminati, your Daigo/Mago/Tokido has declined greatly, guys like your Bon-chan/Sako/Neurosis are inconsistent and people way overestimate those Chinese players. I do have a feeling this is the best chance USA has of winning SF4 in EVO.

Could do but which 4?

Ricky and Justin obviously. But what if they meet say Gamerbee in top 32, a Japanese Sagat or even someone like Vangief? Not so easy for Rufus.

Who else are you backing?
.

Dieminion as a definite 3rd. Chris G, Online Tony, Wolfkrone if he manages to not psych himself out, Sanford and iPeru all have a good chance. Then there's always the Mike Ross factor.

My sleeper pick for SF4 at EVO is Xiaohai, that dude was a monster at Shadowloo Showdown. He may not have won, but he impressed a lot of people and did win the pre-tournament the night before SS2K12 that had all the same killers that were in the main tournament. Now it's just a question of who is coming. The amount of international killers at EVO for SF4 may just prove to be too much that I wouldn't be surprised if no American makes it to top 8. It would definitely kill the mood in the room though if no Americans make it because Americans love it when our guys are up against the rest of the world and without that, it'll be a pretty quiet finals for the main event at EVO.

Among all those guys, I think only Wolfkrone has a good chance, I would also throw in Latif as well. Seriously, guys like Chris G, Online Tony, and Sanford, they're good but I don't think they're at the level where they can be a serious threat to a Xiaohai, Poongko, or Daigo.

I think all of those are really a class below, but anything is possible. Last I heard Sanford isn't going which is a shame. I think he matches up really well against some of the top names.

Fingers crossed Mike Ross does well again. PR Balrog I pick to go a very long way.

So as someone who knows nothing about anything in SF4 how do you guys thing Daigo will place at Evo?

He is no mug, but he has had his day now that there is so much more competition. Once again depends on the draw, but an outsider.

SF4 aka Set up fighter aka Mix up fighter is not very friendly towards our average Joe, Ryu. He's a very solid character with good normals, anti-air, and zoning. But what does he do off a sweep or throw? Safe jump? Empty jump into low short? Ambiguous cross up? These are things that practically every character can do, which means they're nothing special and it's part of the reason Ryu's position has dropped since Vanilla. This is the character Daigo plays and that's why many are predicting that he won't even make top 8 now. I still think he will, but I wouldn't put my money on him winning though.

I feel like Online Tony is slept on out of those three. He doesn't make it out to majors as often as other tops players but when he does he's always managed to do very well against top foreign players and he's gotten significantly better this year.

He's going to get top 8. He's solid enough and, if he has to, has enough pocket characters to make it to top 8 at the very least.

He's not going to make top 8 IMHO, he's not the same player after the Poongko trashing. Or to be more exact he's the same player but people no longer fear him and they are used to his Ryu tricks by now. I agree that chances of any Ryu player making top 8 isn't high, he's just not scary by now. I kind of feel the same way about Sagat and Guile too.

I think there's a good chance that Daigo won't make it to top 8 because he'll be too stubborn (or whatever his reasons) to pick Yun against a solid Sim or Fei.

Dude needs to go back to his old days and pick the cheap stuff, I mean Ryu was strong in vanilla but ever since AE... eh

Characters with very few gimmicks can still do incredibly well in AE2012. Characters like Fei, Cammy, Rufus and Sagat are all considered high tier by most top players and have very few gimmicks compared to an Akuma, Seth or C.Viper.

Solid play will still get you farther than anything in the game.

Cammy and Rufus are still part of the one sweep/throw and win the round crowd. Sagat hasn't been high tier for a while. Fei is probably the only all all rounder that does well.

Mago and Fuudo has looked a lot less dangerous in AE2012 after the Fei nerfs. I have a feeling they aren't going to end up in EVO top 8 too.

I think America is going to win EVO in AE, unless Daigo wakes up. Stop being a family man and become the Beast once again.

Seeing Mago lose or go toe to toe against some of the Americans tells me how even we are. Some characters are better in Japan and vice versa.

he should just train daigo jr and then unleash him at a future evo.

i'm really interested in who will take KOF. i know a lot of people think bala will take it easy but i've been hearing about many top asian and south american players coming to evo so he will finally be put the test. i'm hoping he wins but i want it to be over the best.

They're still doing great. The problem is the rest of the world has caught up to Japan so they don't look as dominate as they used to.

I'll do it I even have the goatee Daigo has.
no its going to be daigo jr! daigo will come to evo in a mask and then fight his own son in the grand finals of sf5. daigo will reveal himself after jr wins.

Fei was a monster in AE though. Fei may not have had a dive kick, but he had immense pressure with Rekkas and plenty of set ups off a knockdown as Mago has shown off. Plus he still had the death combo which he could do against part of the cast. One command throw could mean as much as 472 damage with 2 bars.

He has dropped off a bit with AE 2012, but he still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. For Ryu, a character that has almost no universal BS/set ups against the entire cast, he's going to have to land a lot of low foward into fireball to win matches.

Mago has been back in the pack longer then Daigo. I wouldn't use either of them as a measure of top play any more, nor Tokido (in SF4)

The fact that nobody really knows where everybody sits until the day is what is making it pretty exciting for me. I'm expecting another Fuudo type winner.

I wish I had under-the-radar recommendations for Soul Calibur, but that community seems to be in decline even though they finally got a good game. If Omega(DR) is coming then he's a must-watch - one of the smartest players I have ever seen in any game, won SC3 Nationals and took 5th in SC4 at Evo with one of the absolute worst characters. Strong Yoshimitsu players like Lolo and Neorussell are also worth checking out, I think he's one of the coolest 3D FG characters when played well.

OmegaDR is not coming as far as I know. He was banking on using the money from the World Championship to get there, but that money has not arrived yet.

Supposedly a bunch of Japanese players are coming to play SCV though.

Yeah I agree on the whole shenanigans thing in SF4, especially in what I saw from the Rufus wins at CEO. It looked pretty stupid imo, especially when it was often over after just one knockdown.

Daigo's Ryu looked pretty damn good I thought aside from when he went against Rufus, even fending off one of his worst matchups in Mago's Fei (who completely destroyed him during that one Gods Garden tournament in a FT10).

OVerall, after all these years Ryu is still my fave SF character and Daigo my fave player so I really hope something memorable comes from them this Evo.
