Fighting Games Weekly | March 18-24 | FGC Kickstart 101: Cut a deal with the bronies

East Coast seems to be more hype about Injustice than West Coast. It seems to be in relation to MK. The majority of MK players seems to be on the East Coast as well. I don't think I've seen one West Coast player saying they will get into Injustice.

FChamp has been hyping it up. Drew Grimey says he will main Bane.

East coast has a lot of caribbean hispanics (puerto rico/Dominican Republic) and Mortal Kombat is HUGE in those areas, so the same gameplay/company definetaly will get looks.

I'd want someone who would actually be around instead of standing in front of building for a month. Do you know why so many relationships do not work? Not being around is one popular reason.
Isn't he married? Plus how many girls would pass up the chance to be with a fucking AMBASSADOR of Nintendo? Not many.

Swag on a hundred thousand trillion. His wifey chose right to get hitched to the Prince Harry of the FGC.

Probably where they're doing the testing, then?

I wouldn't take Champ's word for it. He's the type that would buy or get for free any game but will always stick to UMVC3 with a little bit of AE on the side. I thought it was funny as soon as IPL died he stopped caring about SFXT saying the money is gone.

I think he was. And Fuck Nintendo. Fuck Nintendo since the N64. Saturn > N64.

But yeah. I'd rather see a Capcom vs DC. I think a Killer Instinct vs Mortal Kombat would be better. Or Timekillers vs Mortal Kombat.

Swings arcade stick at a player, tells the fgc to grow up lmao, this guy..

Capcom isn't a good company unless they give me exactly what I want. Like a baby!
Capcom would be okay no matter what they do if they'd just put Marvel in a full nelson for more Mahvel support.

*gasps audibly*

Yeah, we love us some old Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat.

Then expect the game to be broken as hell day 1.

Well they've already been doing the balance testing before now, hence the past tense. Depends on how long they've given to it, I suppose.

Edit:

for the past two months we’ve brought in 20 or 30 pro players, especially guys that don’t neccesarily like Mortal Kombat and are more about Street Fighter (guys that are negative towards our game)

30 Capcom game pros for two months, best case scenario, in addition to internal testing and balancing.

Do you think that won't be enough?

2 months is not enough at all. The number of players is fine (if they are actually "pros") but the time isn't. I mean if you even compare it to MVC3, 2 months in 2 million players didn't pick up on DHC glitch, TAC infinites, Lightning Loops and the various other broken stuff.

I don't understand the comparison you're trying to make here.

Shit is hard pre-launch. And I really doubt MvC3 or SF4 had that many players on site for balance testing outside of employees of Capcom. Even location tests are difficult to parse. 2 months is a fuckload of time, how much do you want for a game that is changing and iterating in all aspects as you go? There is no perfect scenario for pre-launch balancing unless you delay the game willingly for a year to let some sort of internal metagame develop.

Plus not every game is as complex and hard to balance as Marvel.

This is why annual (and emergency) patches are the truth. The best testing you'll get is the combined intellect and effort of your playerbase.

injustice is going to be like every other mortal kombat game, its not even worth arguing over. its mk with DC skins on it. everything from terrible jump animations, to that bouncing balloon juggling system crap they're doing to the special moves are just reskins.

What if they did (semi) public online betas like PSABR/GoWA Multi/Various non-fighting games?
I think this is a fantastic solution that is well suited to the genre, except online infrastructure still sucks everywhere and online is never really indicative of the kinds of strategies employed offline, which is the priority. Needs an offline mode where the data is sent from offline matches online.

I think a DotA-like rollout from closed beta to F2P is what the genre needs. Also allows for flexibility in adding characters as they're developed sequentially.

Games like Tekken, SF, VF or SC don't need as much time to balance nowadays because they have so much history to fall back on. If you are making a new engine/system with brand new characters you need to devote at least 2-3 times as much time to balancing... half a year minimum of constant balance testing and revisions.

MVC3 could've been balance tested for 3 years and it still would've shipped with broke stuff. Game needs annual patch changes. Engine is too open, character difference and combinations too high. Basically what Bum was saying yesterday "they can fix all the broke stuff we have now and new broke stuff will come up... engine is very open".

SC5 is very different from any of the previous SC. Like we're talking double impact to 3s level of difference if not more to be fair.

I understand where you are coming from and I agree to an extent.

Ehhh...within reason, having an idea of what your game plays like online, realizing that many people will play your game online, and trying to give them a good gameplay experience isn't a bad idea.

Blazblue was praised for netcode quality largely due to game design decisions like hitstop time and input buffers, that affect offline as well, but it was still well received in live tournaments.

Each of those games have had a broken revision this gen, though in most cases it got patched.

SC has never had great balance.

proper balance in a fighter is a miracle.

SC5 was more SF2 to SF3 different, and a turnoff for many folks.

Stop talking about this! It would be too excellent. I want to stop thinking about it.

Also, fucking Strider! Get hype!

That's more testing netcode, reception etc. than a solution for balancing really. FPS' have been doing this for a long time, and they take into account balance issues, but it's entirely different when you're dealing with balancing something that can be so technical under conditions that do not mimic those your trying to balance for first and foremost. Testing for netcode and stuff is important too though, because it gives JP devs a better idea on what works and doesn't work elsewhere in the world.

Also Dahbomb your expectations for balancing are completely unrealistic.

Yeah balance means nothing to me anymore. Like I've said before, whether a game is honest or not usually has no indication of it's quality to me.

I am not even asking for proper balance, just to not have a game on day 1 that ships with stupidly obvious broken glitches or exploits. I am still mind fucked that Capcom's team didn't pick up on the DHC glitch, then again it was pretty obvious that game was rushed to hell.
