Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 17-23 | Settle it in Smash

Oh man, I'm going to have so much fun handing out tips if everyone here's going to be playing. I might have to actually learn Rosalina for real so that the JC Donkey Kong vs my Rosalina rivalry can persist in this game too. :lol

should've learned Rosalina already!

By the way, my Wii U ID is Karsticles - add me up in preparation for Friday! I need to order my ethernet adapter still...

Are you good with them? I have yet to fight a great Jiggs.

I still need to level up with Jiggs, but I feel like my uptilts and air game are on point. It's just that my rest isn't where it needs to be right now :/

all the weeklies will now take place at twitch.tv/superdojo. smash sunday is now called super smash weekends and it seems more official than the other two. at least put the superdojo link in the op so other people who don't know what happened can tune in.
We all give Enzo crap for his titles, but the banner changes have universally been clutch. One correction to the OP, though: the US version of UNIEL has a release date now of February 24th.
Noted. Will update OP when I get time.

My body is ready.
I'll take this as an agreement to do it! You know the drill, PM me the answers to the questions in OP some time before Sunday night.

I'll admit to lurking battle GAF from time to time. Perhaps I'll have the confidence to post one day.
Join the movement.

This is so badass, might make it my background on my phone.

LOL to me is the wrong inspiration for EVO anyways- it should be the WSOP.

Think about it- what's the WSOP about- it's basically you get to play against the best in the world if you got the cash to put up, and if you win, you make it big.

The one change I'd make to EVO payouts is to take the pot bonus and make them raffle tickets you get by winning matches. The main tourney would keep the 70/20/10 or whatever with the entry fees, but folks who win a match have a shot at say $1,000 with 20 winners if the pot bonus is 20k.

2000 entrants and a 70% winners is 14k. Even a 50% would be 10k

I really wish I knew if I'd like Smash or not. Part of me is afraid it's too super-technical from all the stuff I hear.

This sounds pretty sweet if you ask me.

Putting aside the people involved for a moment, what does "make it esports" even mean? That's incredibly non-specific, a catch-phrase that does nothing more than to polarize sides.

Same goes for "gotta keep our character". You're assuming a united, homogenous view of the FGC.

Point out clear examples of what you like, don't like, want to see changed. Blanket statements at best are noise in the crowd and at worst add to the hyperbole..

I'll go ahead and explain myself, by esports I mean neutering the character that the multiple communities within the FGC have. It'll become over-professionalized and what drew the hype in for people (pop offs, running across the stage, stare downs, smack talk, etc.) might be done away with to cater to a larger audience. Now, by keeping character, I meant that as in each of the individual communities. I've seen sponsors come and go for tournaments throughout the years and I dislike the fact that they can mandate what is good or not good for a tournament at times, especially if they are putting in the cash. Its understandable that they want to garner their product to the populace, however, neutering the character of any community of the FGC is not worth it since it'll take away what made it unique. Let me give you an example, what if the sponsor didn't like the commentators due to how they were dressed, how they spoke, or their reputation overall aside from the tournament scene? This is a general statement and I realize that but what I'm trying to is that the sponsors will then have more delegation over tournaments. Hell, I'm pretty sure if a company paid someone enough money, they delegate a game that should be on the main stage for a big tournament.

What I don't like is, if what Watson said is accurate on how Wizard got his position in running EVO, giving some jobless guy the position just cause the Canon brothers felt bad him and his situation. Bring more respectable people into the scene to run tournaments since some TO's act like 5 year olds or rig brackets just cause it feels right. Sometimes common sense or ethics isn't the first thing that comes to mind for a few people that run tournaments. Probably some of the gaffers here have what it takes to run a tournament better than some of the TO's. I love the community and how strong knit it is, its been very welcoming to me and the hype is always there. I just want the community to stay as it is and grow together into something more instead of copping out and trying to get a fortune running these tournaments.
My rant is over and probably has a bunch of grammatical errors, let me excuse myself so I can get some nourishment!

Wiz has always ran tournaments, all the way back to SHGL days.

Maybe Wiz acts like a baby sometimes, but he runs the tournaments clean for the most part (or the Cannons really, haha). I want to hear his side of the story.

Even having stages to run across and streams to talk shit on in the first place, was going "esports". These things were not here before in the arcade days.

I don't get this hate some people have toward EVO. The Cannons started this from the bottom, grassroots. And grew it with their vision. Me personally, I like where they are taking it and what they have done.

Seems almost like people hating what is on top. Or that Batman quotes coming true in real life. You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain, haha.

I thought about going out to get one for that much

but then I was just like.....naaaah

Question: How were the SuperArcade streams this week as far as language goes? I don't mind cussing but I can't watch NSFW Fridays after the first one I popped into went a bit crazy with some not great stuff to the LGBT community :/

Not saying anything has to change, I don't have anything against Watts, I just need to know if those streams are for me. NSFW Fridays isn't so I just don't watch, hoping the Wed/Thur streams are a bit better.

Edit: Ah word choice

The scene (and especially EVO/SRK) has been doing the big stage/big presentation thing, commentary, and videos long before e-sports was a buzz word. We were doing these things when "streaming" meant waiting for your homie to send a VHS tape to you through the USPS.

What happened is SFIV. Everything got larger, more crowded, more hustlers, more sponsors, more money, more bullshit.

Even when EVO was getting by with a ton of volunteers and the Cannons lost money (if I had to guess, the event didn't break even until IV arrived)...back when getting 50 people registered for a game at a major was considered "big time"...the event and SRK were getting hated on. A lot of it is being the top dawg. People have this misconception that EVO/SRK has been a sort of corporate entity this whole time. That they are the establishment to take down.

These things were built by random Street Fighter fans sitting in IRC during the 90's that wanted an alternative to alt.games.sf2 and needed an excuse to bring the best players together to play against each other. There was nothing malicious about any of it. It wasn't a hustle.

So now that there is all this big money, sponsorship, people's e-reps on the line...I mean, I'm not surprised it gets hated on now more than ever. It was getting hated on when none of that shit was involved. :P

Sorry, I'm just venting at this point. ;P

Last week wasn't too great. The commentary wasn't good, and I recall it being less "professional" on word choice.

I feel like I'm hearing more cussing after leveluplive split.

If anyone actually wants to see what an esports event looks like, Dreamhack Winter is next weekend and features shops, a big old wedge of PC game tournaments for you to watch and SF4 run as a far smaller thing than it really should be. :P

Cussing is whatever, I just want to avoid the other nastiness. I saw Watts say somewhere he doesn't support those things, I just wanna make sure before I pop back in after last time I watched.
