So it turns out there was a death in my wife's family and we're going to be flying to the Philippines next Wednesday. It sucks, but... it is sadly a part of life.

So that being said, I'm a little unsure what the pack... what do folks usually wear to a funeral in the Philippines? I have Barong, but should I bring a suit and tie and dress shirt to wear? I could/should ask my wife, but she is under enough stress at the moment.

Any tips regarding general Filipino funeral customs and such would be good to know too.

Also, last time we were there my electronic devices weren't charging worth a damn. Since they're all US devices at 120v do I need a 220>120/110v adapter? Or would one of those world travel adapter things suffice?

Thanks in advance :)

My condolesence, kaibigan.

You don't have to wear barong or any suit or tie. Just wear a black polo or collared shirt and that is perfectly fine. It's humid out there so wear something confortable.

Also for the 220/110v, you need an adapter for those. We call them "transformers". I am not sure if the world travel adapter would work.

You can get those adapters in the mall or any electronic store.

Condolences, Buddha Beam.

Check the plugs on your electronics. Most modern ones say they take between 110 and 240 V, and in my experience traveling to many Euro 240 countries, they work perfectly, with a plug adapter where necessary.

I'm traveling to PI for the first time in October and am looking for some SIM card advice.

Which carrier should I go with if I'll be in Cebu/Mactan and then Boracay? And do they have a data package I can purchase for a week or a month? I don't need any voice minutes.

Thanks for any help.

Any SIM is fine. My wife was using Sun Cellular on Boracay.

Man, I envy you. I would love to go to Boracay. Please do Ariel's Point. :)

I just looked it up and Ariel's Point looks amazing. Embarrassingly, I can't swim, so I probably won't be jumping off :(

Maybe I'll make it my goal to learn to swim in the Philippines.

I bought a Smart SIM since they seem to have LTE. Hopefully I'll get a decent connection with my Nexus 5.

Thanks for the advice and condolences, all. I wound up buying a converter which worked really well for everything.
Although on a related issue, we had sent her family our old flatscreen TV in a balikbayan box and were setting it back up for them. The weird thing is, even with a more powerful step down box, we were getting zapped by the TV when we touched any metal part of it. I'm starting to think that maybe the house just has lousy wiring or something.

Might need to use an automatic voltage regulator, and make sure there's no adapter on the plug itself.

Heya Filipino-GAF, just wanted to plug this event out as it's turning out to be a huge deal here in Manila.

WHAT: E-SPORTS and GAMING SUMMIT 2014

E-SPORTS and GAMING SUMMIT 2014 (or better known as ESGS2014) is a gaming event focused on the budding e-sports scene in the country. Among the games slated to appear are DOTA 2, Starcraft 2, LoL, Dragon's Nest, Hearthstone, USF4, TTT2, KOF13, among others. Presented by Game X and Smart Communications, along with Samsung, MSI, OLX.com, Mineski, Monster Energy, and HeroTV.

The event will also feature game exhibitions from some of the local Manila-based indie studios and even international publishers such as Cherry Credits and Blizzard (yes that Blizzard).

Hopefully Filipino gaffers could drop by and make this the most successful gaming event in the Philippines!

Oooh cool. Didn't know there was a Filipino Gaf. I'm in the states now, but still visit Philippines from time to time. I spent my childhood in Quezon City and even going back now and again, I still freaking love it!

Also, subscribed!

I'm only FIlipino through blood. I'm so disconnected to my culture. =_=

Same here, my great friend who's born in Canada knows more about Filipino Culture and History than me, and I've lived there for a couple of years.

It's cool though, he's anti-filipino "pride" though he knows his stuff.

It's cool though, he's anti-filipino "pride" though he knows his stuff.

Born and raised in the PI for 13 years and I'm part of this club lol.

"Filipino-pride" as defined by the people who never grew up there is filled with three things: Manny Pacquiao, Jollibee(even though they never have tried it and are only hyping it up coz we who have tried it say it's the best), and Manny Pacquiao.

Real Filipino pride is sitting with your mother watching TFC, actually understanding why Miley was a bitch to Sophie when Miley's dad was the asshole all along, fighting between Eat Bulaga and Magandang Tanghali Bayan(thereby starting the GMA vs ABS-CBN wars as well as the best hosts between the two networks), rooting for Laida and Miggy's relationship, and the list goes on and on.

Basically what I'm saying is, American/Canadian Filipino pride is about appreciating the things that supposedly makes us better than the other races of the world. When in fact, anybody who's lived there for a while will realize Filipino pride is never about that at all.

I'm not saying you can't love Jollibee or be Manny's hypeman, but you're totally missing out on what makes us, us. Sit down and watch TFC, they've got English subtitles for almost every show on the network... you'll learn more about our culture watching it than trying to figure out where the closest Jollibee is next to you.

Don't remember if I posted here before so yeah, grew up in the Philippines, Angeles City for 25 years before moving to Seattle 2 years ago with my wife (we got married when we got here). Missed the country so much that we went back for a quick vacation last March. Seeing family and my friends back home was cool but man did I not miss driving there. Traffic's way worse compared to when I left and the commercial developments happening in the city is starting to make things way too crowded now there

Oh god, I'm currently working for the channel that produces that show as a cataloger for their shows. In my team, no one wanted to work on it because how annoying Sophie is. I also had the chance to work on it and the show was really bad, even below the usual telenovela standards.

But at least Sophie is hot. I wanted to watch a few more episodes because she is hot, but the moment they brought up the love triangle, I stopped watching.

Work rant over. I seriously hope I'm the only gaffer in my office. Well, they did block Neogaf.

And don't worry, from what I heard that show is not gonna last any longer now. It did get extended, since it should have been finished earlier.

Heeeeey fellow Kampampangan :)

So my wife and I are going back to the Philippines in October. We got married in the states by the state and her folks don't think we're married "for real." Also my wife wants that big showey wedding.... Anyway its a good excuse for me to spend a month in the Philippines. We'll mostly be in Lucban (near Lucena in Quezon Province) but I hope to make it up to Angeles for a bit. My Lola passed away in March... its still a shock to me but I have to see her grave. We'll be in Manila for a bit too.

You guys have a Fil-Gaf meet up? We should do that? I'm up for three meetups :p Heck even maybe four cause I think my wife wants to go to Palawan or Cebu for our honeymoon. (I said Boracay but I think my mom coerced her). Where are you guys at? So yeah from like October 2nd to November 7th I should be all over the Philippines but mostly in Quezon province.

Hope to meet a lot of you :D

Are there any HD Filipino shows anyway?

I thought TFC had an HD version?

Most of the shows (if not all) are shot in HD, but they are not transmitted locally in HD mainly because of the transmission the majority of the consumers still use (antennas). There are HD channels, but you need to have a premium cable subscription, and not all even consider paying for cable when you can download/stream HD shows online. That's mainly the reason why the channels don't really consider transmitting their shows in HD.

Except for ABS-CBN, which badly wants to change the transmission method. But it's mostly so that they can eat off GMA's Manila ratings. (In a lot of areas here, ABS-CBN is unwatchable via Antenna. Their signal is oddly that bad in the capital, unlike in the provinces)

There hasn't been any Fil-Gaf meet-ups but I'm down for one! I'm based in Quezon City though, and I'm not sure if you will be dropping by Metro Manila.

No, I don't care about the channels. I rather they publish their shows on Bluray or at least let us watch them online in HD with a sub, which they probably do?

edit:
Oh well, online they are.

I also had the chance to work on it and the show was really bad, even below the usual telenovela standards.

I actually don't watch it that much lol. I was just able to deduce what the hell was going on after watching one episode last week as I was eating dinner. And yes, it is seriously one of the worst soaps I've seen in a while. I'd rather watch reruns of Tabing Ilog than this shit lol.

It seems like a lot of soaps are starting to get really boring after the massive success of Santino. The latest show that got my interest was the one with Maja Salvador as a pole dancer but that jumped the shark and she's not a pole dancer anymore AFAIK so I stopped watching.

Honestly, that comedy show with John Lloyd and Toni Gonzaga and Goin' Bulilit are the only things I religiously watch on TFC. Shit is genuinely funny if you know even a little bit about Filipino culture.

Also, I'm pretty sure I saw ads the other night about ABS-CBN stuff getting on iTunes... haven't checked it out but it might be worth a shot.

the only good soap I've watched in a long while was Angelito, cause the lead actor acted very well... story started out strong but just completely died at the trial arc.

The sequel show was ok but man I wish we could get another Angelito show.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I know a bunch of Filipino people and I'm learning Eskrima, does that count?

So do Filipino guys here who live outside of philippines date Asians or Filipinas? I stopped dating Filipinas or even Asians when I got here in the US. Prefer Mexicanas, white or blacks.

Hi I'm half caucasian/ Filipino. Had home-made sinagang last night. It was pretty good. Filipino food really isn't my thing though. I love Japanese food.

My mom is very Filipina but I'm pretty much a true US American.

Yo Filipino-GAF.
Heard that the INC will be occupying a space in EDSA Shaw and permitted to do until Sunday. Is MRT still the best bet or do you really need to go around the area?

People had a hard time going home last night that it took them almost 4 hours in traffic.

Just go around the area. On normal days, MRT is already pretty bad but with this nonsensical stuff happening in EDSA it would be a nightmare.

Hope y'all are staying safe at the airports these days.

I heard about this tanim-bala bullshit and it infuriates me tbh.

Only in the Philippines where you'll find assholes extorting money from the hardworking OFW's and the many tourists that visit the country.

Hopefully these assholes keep it up. I'd love to see the Philippines' tourist economy dry up like the desert, maybe the govt will actually step in and get something done this time.

Oh wait... those motherfnckers are corrupt too.

Yes, I'm fncking infuriated about this... I've got some family that were wanting to visit us here in Texas for Christmas, but at this rate, they're not about to leave the country any time soon.

Going back to the Philippines for January and almost everything I've heard from the nightmares at the Airport to all the rackets and scams is making me not wanna go at all.

It sucks cause I haven't been there in more than 10 years

We're planning on going back April and honestly, I'm not really worried about this.

Big issue with airport staff planting bullets in luggage and extorting/shaking down passengers. Even Pacquiao getting involved saying the House Palace isn't doing diddly squat and is offering his legal services free of charge.

I'm bad at explanations so I'll just send a couple of links regarding the issue.

But basically its about the guards / cops / security in airport are allegedly planting bullets on passengers bound to leave the airport. They then will ask for a bribe, or if not they'll mark ur passport and prevent you from leaving the country.

The latest headache we filipinos are now facing is the APEC summit. Almost 350+ flight have already been canceled thanks to that.

Oh shit, I thought my friend were kidding when she told me about it yesterday! I didn't really believe it as it were sounding so out-there. That's shocking to say the least.

Heard someone say that it's an isolated case and only a few were affected I was on PC so I didn't catch who said that in a news program. Me and my mother reacted immediately.

Even if this is an isolated case, does that mean you won't give any fucks?

Also, some people are wrapping their bags with plastic as a counter measure. And no, don't put padlocks as I've seen there's a new modus operandi wherein they change your lock. Another thing, it seems like there are Taxi drivers involved in this as well.

I'm so mad at this, we don't have such a good image these days and this is ruining it even more. They're just acting on this NOW because APEC is coming up soon.
So, if APEC is done it'll probably go back to how things were. Government not giving a damn on the issue at hand.

I'm 1/4 Filipino if that counts. My grandma was born in the Philippines and my dad is 1/2 filipino. She brought almost none of the culture with her when she came to the U.S. with my grandpa (he was stationed there in the Air force) so my dad is very white-washed and just a very typical american dude. I've never been to the Philippines and neither has my dad, but I'd like to go some day. I really like lumpia. That's pretty much my only connection to Filipino culture.

If you guys are going back here, just mind your belongings arriving and departing. There's a lot of fucked up officials here.

So stupid that they planted a single bullet several times with different passengers. What the fuck are you going to do with a single bullet? Those are baggages that you check-in too.

Uh this is messed up. Luckily I've never had any trouble flying anywhere as a foreigner (in neither Palawan, Bohol, Boracay, Mactan, Caticlan), other than once not having enough money for the airport fee. Hoping to go back early next year, for a month or so, having previously spent half a year in Mandaue City. Fell in love with that place and hope to figure out a way to live there for good one day. The one thing I to hate about the Philippines is Globe and Sun.

My wife and I (and both our parents) are going to the Philippines next week and hearing about this pisses me off.

My wife has been watching the ABS-CBN news on TFC and sees reports of everyone at the airport paranoid.

Had to order brand new luggage and bags with no extra outside pockets and secured zippers over the weekend just to keep ourselves a little bit more secure, despite the luggage we already have is perfectly fine and relatively new.

Idiots.
