Final Fantasy 8 now on Steam - $11.99

Also, if anybody wants some easy Gil at the start...search the middle bookshelf in the library to find "occult fan no.1". Read it and then sell for a nice 17,500 Gil.

Also, for some reason I have Mog's Amulet in my inventory from the start. Teaches my GF mini mog ability. I don't remember that from ps1 version at all.

The MIDI music sucks, but it shouldn't be an issue. They updated FF7 to include the original soundtrack, and it was pretty easy to mod into it in the first place. WIthin a few days at the most there will be Steam guides telling you how to get the soundtrack in. I'll get this in the christmas sale anyway, not expecting much off but I only just picked up FF7 in the autumn sale so I need to finish that first.

What others have said. The first time I played I had no clue how the game worked and made little attempt to understand it. Then I got it on PSP and played, learned to use Refine and not Draw, and not depend on the GFs so much.

Unfortunately it's way too easy to break the game and make the characters insanely overpowered. Squall + Aura rivals an Orlandu FF Tactics level of broken.

Yeah if enough people complain I'm sure they'll patch the original music in like they did with FF7. Definitely buying this during the winter sale.

I thought you need to have all mags for the achievement

I thought this game was completely impossible until I found out about Island Closest to Heaven/Hell. I turned off battles and ran around drawing spells for an hour. Problem solved!

How do people already have achievements for finishing it at level 1?

That's a cool achievement, it's actually easier than leveling up, I think.

According to Steam Achievements, 7.7% of players have gotten all the cards and got to level 100, while 2.6% have completed the game without leveling Squall up. This has to be pretty bugged, right?

Low number of owners right now, testers and hackers will break the achievements for the time being.

Wait a couple of months and those will drop down to .1%.

Another possibility is people are loading up their original FFVIII save into the Steam version. Seems plausible considering the fact that only the hardcore fans are buying FFVIII at full price right now.

8 at least has the Boost ability, so you had something to do during those long summons, and you could really up the damage done significantly if you were fast.

See above. Also, they look cool.

The damage still sucks, overall summons are really really weak in this game compared to everything else.

Love that mix of razor-sharp 3d and blurry 2d. If they weren't going to do a full HD remake, they should have just kept everything looking like the PSX release but upscaled.

I never played it. Is it good?

It's very... polarizing. For me it's tied with IX as my favorites in the series.

I always get weirded out when they do that. High res model textures and text in a low res game looks very jarring.

I'm considering jumping in. I've never played it either. I remember skipping it after 7 when it first came out. Any word on performance yet? Is the steam version good?

Lazy port SE

- No psx music
- Upped resolution slightly, but introduced a jaggy mess
- Didn't fix fonts
- No controller support

This was stealth released for a reason.

Does all of this mean XV will come to PC as well?

Wouldn't surprise me, Square Japan is obviously warming up to the PC scene at this point.

I've said it before, but while I appreciate these older games getting on Steam, getting the newer games day one would be more healthy for the platform overall.

Money was a joke in 8. I always used a FAQ and completed the Seed Tests as soon as possible, which gives you a huge chuck of cash at regular intervals if you do all of them.

Yeah just plugged in my controller and it is not recognizing it, weird because the options menu has a controller tab....

I always wanted to finish this, I think I got about halfway
to where that lizard lady shows up
and did not get to finish. Will pick it up sometime in the future.

Maybe its my screwed up resolution, but I can't seem to start the game. I had to sit through this long intro of black and white pictures, then it took me to the title screen. Couldn't do anything, now it sits on the title screen. Only button that works is escape, and that just asks me if I want to quit the game.

WTH

EDIT:

Orrr I just press the button X. Da fuck.

13€. LOL. Not buying when I got it on PSN (which means portable on PSP and Vita) for 5€...

The game went through QA before it was released so those stats probably take that into account.

Tips on how to break the entire game within 45 minutes of starting:
As soon as you can, max out your salary level. Buy 30 tents as soon as you can. Use Siren's Life Magic refine ability to refine 30 tents into 300 Curagas. Junction Curaga to each character's HP. You now have enough HP to beat the entire game without any difficulty--and because your max HP is boosted and your current HP is not, Squall will be in limit break mode until you heal. Fight as few random battles as you can for the entire game; learn Card Mod to kill enemies without earning experience. I believe Diablos has an ability to lower the random battle encounter rate. Don't ever fight a random battle where you actually kill the enemies, only run or Card Mod. You will be able to blaze through the entire game with no difficulty whatsoever.

Nifty!

The first time I played this game, at launch way back when in 8th grade, I didn't draw
Siren because I thought it was another lame status spell
. The game proved to be moderately challenging early on without the benefits! My friend, however, did and broke the game wide open and lulz'd his way through the early-mid game.

can't they spend a little money and re-render those background to somewhat ok res?

Nice, reading this thread has given me strategies for when I go back and finish the game. Didn't know that the card game played an important role for building spells/ stats or whatever. If I knew that, I would have done it to begin with. I don't think I've played more than 1 or 2 games with the cards.

Other than that, I never had a problem with draw, I would only draw what I needed and it never felt that tedious. I also did the item refine thing to get more casts as well.

Gonna spam these things a bit when I start so I can finally finish the game. I always get somewhere near the last leg of the game and then stop.
