Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

How do FATEs start relationships? A bunch of people spam attacks and then disperse.

They don't. Same problem GW2 had with Dynamic Events. Sounds fun on paper, but ends up being a mindless zerg event. Much prefer instanced group content. The new guildhests are actually a great addition in this latest phase.

I like that they're an addition to Final Fantasy XIV, but not a focus like they were in Guild Wars 2. They add an element of variety at a minimum and certainly don't detract from the game.

Is the open beta going to be the same? Kinda silly if it is... At least I have the client ready to go for this weekend.

I'm fine with FATEs, personally. I mean, yeah, I don't make any friends with them, but they're a quick distraction and I get a nice EXP reward. So whatevs. If I don't feel like doing one, I walk right the hell on by.

It might even change later in this phase. That being said, open beta is for all intents and purposes, "the game". You can expect to not notice a difference between Open Beta and the launch of the game

It's def just a clusterfuck in a crowded zone, but when your in a pretty empty zone, I can see some 'meetin' and speakin' starting up.
Yeah, I was just about to post this. Pretty much every FATE i did in empty areas lead to me teaming up with 1-2 other people to complete it. There was emoting and chit chatting when we finished. Sure, no friends were made, but you're more likely to generate a sense of a community through FATEs than well, no FATEs.

So, here's my situation, as backward as it may seem. I'm selling my gaming PC in order to buy a PS4 and games. One of the main reasons that I'm selling the PC is that FFXIV is officially coming to PS4. The way I see it, I may as well sell the PC, whose sole purpose is to play FFXIV, and buy a PS4 which I really, really want at this point.

However, this means that I will have only a laptop in the meantime to play FFXIV upon release...and it's a laptop with Intel integrated graphics :(
An opportunity arose to procure a PS3 for a very cheap price. I figured I'd grab the PS3, play a few other games I like on it, and I'll have the ability to play FFXIV in my living room on launch day. Eventually, I'll pick up the PS4 version, but at least I'll have the means to play the game in the meantime.

Basically, what did the PS3 players think of the performance of FFXIV beta on the console? Is it playable enough to hold out for a PS4 version next year?

When these Betas are over and done with, will we be able to still use our saved presets from character creations? I know that our beta characters won't carry over. I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times already, but after spending two minutes on Google to find the answer, I give up.

When I rolled my phase 3 character, it detected not only my saved phase 2 design, but also my saved alt from 1.0 that I made on my other computer in december 2010. I'd imagine that your designs now are safe if you save them.

If they really wanted it to work that way, they should have made something like a FATE-specific party state (or talk channel?). Maybe designed it so players are given unique objectives which function as complementary roles. Doesn't really work out. Didn't care for GW2's public quest stuff either, so I was never all that excited for FATEs. The endgame ones could be cool though I guess... if they are not hampered by dozens of clueless players or constricted in design so that players can't hurt your effort on taking it down (in other words: no bad actions).

Is there an option for chat bubbles at all? I miss most /say because I'm rarely looking at the chat box.

Of course. I've just played through both extremes. FFXI's grouping necessity coupled with it's time consuming group making. Even in current FFXI getting a group together to do something like, WOTG missions, takes forever.

Then SWTOR where there is no reason to even chat with another person until endgame. Makes the whole world feel lifeless and lonely.

FATEs aren't anything amazing, but it's better than nothing. When you couple it with the storyline missions and hopefully incentive driven guildhests, the sense of community will be there.

Think someone else said this, but even just group quests to take on a static spawning elite mob in zones would be better then relying on the "dynamic events" for fun group play. Not gonna lie though, I loved seeing tons of Marauders die to the boss fates around Limsa because there were no healers and no other classes.

ugly as sin but ran fine from what i could tell
load time is a bit long between zone
so much so i dread going back into the city to complete quests too often
iono how that compares to pc

Is there a good place online that acts as a sort of manual for the game?

I played FFXI for a long time, but never really messed with another MMO. I found myself a little lost in all of the stuff going in in FFXIV as the pacing and mechanics were mostly new to me.

The official site is nice for a broad idea on classes and stuff, but not really on specifics. For instance, I only read in passing that abilities learned can work across classes. Or that I should go to a class guild to be able to switch to it. Also, I don't really get how FATE works. I don't get most of what's going on honestly.

Agreed. They are a nice diversion that help bust up the monotony of the quest grind. The starter area FATEs are def basic zergfests, looking at the FATE commentary it looks like they get a lot more interesting as you hit higher level zones.

It's a miracle it runs as well as it does, IMO. The framerate is not perfect, the shadows are missing, things are generally uglier and the animation is poor...but it's all there. And really fun!

Good enough to be very enjoyable. Framerate is spotty and the game isn't much of a looker, but it's totally good enough for me. I'll definitely switch to the PS4 version when it comes out though.

So, I just thought I'd bring attention to the fact that the physical PC Collector's Edition is ONLY available on the Square Enix Online Store:

http://store.na.square-enix.com/sto...eID.29853700/productID.281319400#.Ub_DBk3pvtQ

I live in Canada. If the Square Enix store uses Digital Rivers for shipping I'm literally going to buy a PS3 Collector's Edition from Gamestop and a regular PC version of the game. I really don't want to have to bother with that nightmare. There's the other option of also buying a copy in the UK as I'm over there for most of the summer, but I sadly return on August 24th.

Load times were practically nothing on my PC.

I consider 2-3 seconds fast.

I think you could also contribute that to your connection speed as well. I'm on an SSD and didn't get them to load near as fast, but I don't have that fast a connection and I share it with a few other people.

I hope so. Basic zerg stuff is fun to a point, but more interesting FATEs would be pretty awesome. All of events in GW2 ending up being nothing but zerg fests. Kill some guys, get exp and reward, then go back to w/e you were doing before hand. Any word on when we'll get to see some of these higher level events? I'm hoping for open beta, but we might have to wait till launch to see them in action.

On the other hand, I thought the dungeons were done well. The last dungeon with the interesting bosses were a lot of fun and a good change of pace from normal boss fights. I hope to see more innovative fights at higher levels as well.

They aren't that fast... I'm on an SSD too.

I consider 2-3 seconds fast.

The initial load when you first start the game up is kind of slow, even on an SSD. It's probably a good 30 seconds to a minute for initial load after launch. Afterwards zone loads are super fast on an SSD, like 2-3 seconds for sure.

I use a 256 GB Samsung 830 series SSD in my gaming PC, for anyone who wants to compare.

Really, really hoping this is the case. Still, soloing your first 10-15 levels in XI was somewhat challenging--a rite of passage. Goblins, Yagudo and occasional undead that could catch you off-guard and destroy you. So far with XIV... that kind of challenge just isn't there. At all. There's no rite of passage, there's just "lalala mashing buttons and killing stuff that barely hurts me."

It was only really a right of passage because folks didn't know anything and you could just easily kill yourself by walking into doom. Thankfully, they learned from actually making XI not to do something stupid like that.

How do FATEs start relationships? A bunch of people spam attacks and then disperse.

That's what happened when I played. Its a bit too chaotic to try and start relationships with that. Trying to get dibs on the FATE targets and get enough participation points to get more EXP is like being a lonely bridesmaid trying to get a tossed bouquet from a bunch of other lonely ladies.

I haven't compared it to the PC Beta yet but other than the loading between areas I thought the performance was great for PS3. There were a few occasions where the framerate dipped into the 15-20 range, but otherwise it stayed around 30.

Yeah, it stopped being a "rite of passage" when people learned about Prism Powder and Sneak Oil.

Also, I know some people quit there because of that, so... yeah, probably not the best design, even if many of us have fond memories of it.

Did they fix it so that CNJ get credit for the fate by healing people? In phase 2 I spent a whole fate healing people and I got NO CREDIT.

Yeah, they did (you get credit by generating hate instead of damage now). It's easy to get full credit as CNJ.

I can't wait until this weekend. I'm already having withdrawals and it's killing me that I always have to miss a large chunk of the testing because of work. I'm tempted to use some PTO but I have to resist until at least open beta.

I can't seem to find info on Guildheist ?, is there a place with info or if someone can give out the basics would be cool!

Yeah I was quite disappointed by this answer. He seemed to really underestimate the time it takes to form a bond with another player, especially in something that requires a good level of co-operation. Then saying you could do it through FATE was doubly confusing.

Guildhests are unlocked around level 15 and can be found on Battle Wardens located at various camps. To join a Guildhest, you have to have a full party of four players. You will ideally want a typical party setup with a tank and a healer but we were able to manage the lower level Guildhests without a dedicated healer. This may not be the case as the content scales out but the way the instances are designed, I think that party composition is not as important as in dungeons. There was little penalty for dying as you can instantly respawn and run back into the battle.

Anyway, the Guildhest itself is an instanced challenge with a time limit and objectives that vary depending on the Guildhest chosen and usually contains some type of boss mob to challenge. They are small and linear areas with a clearly defined objective.

In one example, you have to defeat a giant turtle that is constantly being healed by enemy NPCs, while Eft adds continually spawn in over time. The goal is to keep the Eft spawns at bay, eliminate all the mages, and then weaken the turtle. Once the turtle is weakened, a fire spirit spawns. You kill the fire spirit and obtain a core which is then used at a specific location to activate a type of gas that is used to trap the monster. From there, the party lures the giant turtle onto the trap and completes the Guildhest.

You get a massive amount of experience points for completing a Guildhest the first time but subsequent attempts result in a much lower amount of experience points. I am not certain if this 'first time bonus' resets daily or if you only get it once. As you complete Guildhests and level up, you unlock more. I saw at least 5 or more for each level range at 10, 15, and 25 respectively for a total of around 15-20 Guildhests. There will probably be encounters to challenge all the way up to level 50 at launch.

Bah, I hate SE's beta testing schedules, lol. I will be gone from Thursday until Sunday night, so I won't be able to play at all. :(

The previous betas (at least phase 1) lasted until early Monday morning, so I'm not sure why they changed it this time.
