Can someone please tell Square-Enix to get rid of the two name thing? For some reason I really hate it. It's hard enough to come up with a name I like already, this just brings it to the next level.
Having a surname is a godsend to mmos.

Someone else have the 10 names you thought of and want? lol, too bad, no one has last names in this world. Either use accent marks or go with the name you least want.

Embrace it holmes!

After bringing up the hair styles earlier I started to think in the full game I wouldn't mind seeing some classic character inspired hair styles.
im not talking crazy Cloud style but Squall and Tidus wouldn't be bad.
DISSIDIA_012_FF_0006.jpg

Would be my first choice.
don't know how the female selection is but the male side has like 2 that people pick.

Well that sucked. I completely missed the window to play this past weekend. I had free time Friday night and Saturday a few times, but was planning to sit down and play it on Sunday afternoon; too bad I didn't realize that Sunday afternoon isn't Japan's Sunday afternoon. :(

Now I have to wait until Friday to play. *sigh*

I don't understand why they do the weekend thing. Every other MMO beta I've been in just stays up until beta is completely over.

After playing PUG for a weekend and GLD for a weekend I am pretty stoked on this game. The first 3 group-instanced dungeons were really fun. Might have to go ahead and main CNJ though. Healers are kinda overpowered and hyper-desired in most MMOs I've played.

Because their developers spend the beta test weekend monitoring the test and then the rest of the week reviewing data from the test and fixing bugs so they're limiting the testing times in order to keep the amount of data manageable as they work out kinks.

Yeah, I'm sure their temporary solution for players falling through geometry that they've been mentioning in forum posts since the Alpha will be "fixed" before the Beta's over.

Story quests up to level 14 are city-specific and different.

Around 14, you get an airship pass and are sent as an envoy to the other two cities besides the one you started in. You speak with their GC leaders.

At this point, the 3 branching starter main story lines from the cities converge and then you go back to Limsa (regardless of where you started) for the quest "It's Probably Pirates" which takes you to the three starter dungeons outside the three main cities; Sastasha outside of Limsa, Tam-tara outside of Gridania, and then Copperbell Mines outside of Ul'dah, as jiggle mentioned. After that, the next big thing is Ifrit fight around 20, after which you join a Grand Company of your choice, regardless of your starting city.

That would be so glorious. The tears would flow and it would be wonderful.

Thank you very much for this info . i do know now what i plan to do next week :).

Yes i finally got the beta code ( for PS3). dwnl right now.

So after the beta ends do I lose all my character progress? or I will be able to retain it in the retail version?

For this beta phase yes, you will lose progress after it ends. In beta phase 4, progress will carry over to release assume no massive bugs/exploits are discovered.

I haven't seen it brought up much, but the Chocobo companion is pretty amazing. I purposely pulled a few level 48 enemies on top of myself and set the Chocobo to heal stance, his heals were hitting me for 400+ at a time. I bet he could have kept me up the whole time if it wasn't for him pulling threat and almost dieing himself.

That was me, yeah. It was like the first thing I did. I don't have a screenshot to show, but I later moved hotbar #1 on top of hotbar #2 over to the side and moved my buff/debuff bar (which you can't see in that screenshot but it is on top of hotbar #2) under my HP/MP bar so things are grouped a little better.

It really does look great the way you've arranged it. I posted a picture (not a screenshot; an actual picture of my TV, because I'm on a PS3) in post #3700 of this thread where you can see my setup with the hotbars and HP/MP/TP over in the bottom right corner. Is there a way to take stuff out of the HUD completely? I want to totally remove the experience bar and particularly the number of gil you have. Those are total wastes of valuable screen space.

I think it's pretty bad as a non-healer though. Being in a party with it will trigger links that can be lethal at low levels, and the feathered idiot is totally willing to ignore crowd control and wake the targets you've just slept.
They need to let us have more control over the companion with an actual "Attack" command and we should be able to have an easy way to check which stance it's in. Nothing that cannot be fixed I guess.

Now that I got my CNJ up to lv20, I think I'm just going to spend time doing professions and try to figure that stuff out. I went from being 16 and having no lightning shards and not knowing where to get them, to being 20 at the end and having like 40 of them mysteriously in my bag.

Apparently we'll be able to make the Magitek armor a "buddy," too.

So I think I'll make my Chocobo a healer and my Magitek a Tank or Attacker.

Yeah, all my experience with it comes from high levels where the links can be handled, I can see that being a problem at crowded lower levels though. Next weekend I plan on going more in depth with it and leveling a lancer (15) with it so I can give some proper feedback.

Apparently we'll be able to make the Magitek armor a "buddy," too.

Whoa, the thought of having a Magitek companion sounds awesome. Hell, a Goobbue companion sounds awesome too.

You get them sometimes as quest rewards. I'm going to be doing mining and botanist primarily but I haven't made up my mind on what crafting profession to start with.

I really hope auto-sort is working by the time phase 4 starts.

It doesn't really work like that. They don't have stats or gear. All they have is stances Free/Attack/Defense/Healer. I assume they will all be pretty comparable in what they can do. Maybe in the future they will develop the system more to allow for greater customization.

It does, though.

The more they act in a certain role, the better they get at it. And they have a maximum number of points that can be earned in all roles combined, which is lower than that needed to max out all three roles.

So having a dedicated role in mind for each buddy will guarantee that you can max it out.

Usually the professions you choose should line up with what your main job will be for end game unless you like one over the other. I plan on going whm for end game and will most likely pick up clothcraft and leatherworking as my jobs. You could always go the money route too and do something like mining and goldsmithing.

I just hope that leveling crafting doesn't take up a ton of time. It's usually one area that I skip far too often in MMOs since I'm usually just pushing to hit cap so I can start the end game stuff and crafting gets left behind.

I've been trying to look for an answer but can't seem to find one thought I'm guessing it's "No. :(".

If I buy the PC version can I use that account for the PS3/4? (I'm guessing I'll still have to buy the boxed games at the very least.)

The answer is yes.

The answer is yes.

You're making me very happy. Please go on... "Yes" to what degree?

Same or different characters?
Cross-play or not?
Buy two boxed versions?
Unified friendslist?

Well, this isn't XI. Goldsmithing in 1.x was neither very expensive to level nor did the money it could produce vary much from other crafting jobs like, say, LTW and WVR (two crafts that produce high-demand items for materia conversion). Making HQ gems and rings could turn a profit, but those didn't exactly fly off the shelves.

As always, prices fluctuated due to supply of materials from miners--if you like gathering, mining and botany (mining especially, at least in 1.x, because so many crafts use metals) will be great sources of income and are a lot more, shall I say, relaxed than crafting. The crafting minigame, like in 1.x, can be done on a basic level by just spamming 1 button (I got through so many movies and anime series while leveling crafting in 1.x this way lol), but to actually min/max the minigame for HQ synths really requires your full attention and comes with a high chance of failure (resulting in loss of all your material). Gathering, on the other hand, is pretty laid back; perfect for something to do while chatting, listening to something, etc.

In 1.x it took insane amounts of time. In ARR it looks like it's still going to be more time-consuming than speeding a battle job to cap, but it's far less tedious than in 1.x. I think the crafting needs to be time consuming otherwise everyone and their alt does it and that devalues crafting severely and stagnates the market. Crafting and gathering really shouldn't be made with mass-appeal in mind in a game like this.

Your account will be completely the same regardless of what platform you log in on. The only thing different is that you do have to buy separate copies of the game to be able to install on both systems. Other than that, your character, friendlist, etc will pick up right where you left off from one system to the next.

Yes to everything; you just can't play on both from the same account at the same time.

Perfect. Thank you for all the answers. Then I'm guessing I'll pick up the PC-version at launch and the PS4-version when it's released. It can't come soon enough, though.

As a 1.0 player, I'm loving the armory chest. 25 slots for every single equipment type = going from being 99/100 in 1.0 to 3/100 in 2.0.

I'm fine with it not taking near as much time as it did in 1.x, since I easily got burnt out just leveling crafting skills and I would hope it's not nearly as simple as some other games (WoW, SWTOR) and just turn into money sinks. I do agree that the gathering jobs are much more low-key than pretty much every other crafting job in the game. I'm just surprised that goldsmithing didn't pull in the kind of dough it could in FFXI.

I think my only issue at this point is needed to have a craft leveled to affix materia to your armor. I'm hoping they give you the option to allow npcs to do this. I know other users could do it, but it would be limited to only tradable items.

You have to have a craft to do materia? Is it like a certain one you need or what?

Can you do crafting and/or gathering classes in the beta?

They really need to make the PS3 version cross-buy for PS4. Feels like a waste buying PS3 right now.

Yeah, to attach Materia you need the crafting class that can repair the item at the same level as the item. You also need a Catalyst which can only be gathered and I'm sure the highest tier needs a pretty high gatherer class.

As for an NPC doing it...it kinda defeats the point if the game just hands it to you.

You can do crafts in the beta and create materia in the game. But to affix materia to armor, you need a crafting skill to do it. Not sure if it has to be based on the type of armor or weapon you want to affix it to or if any skill works for it. Again, this is why I hope there is a solution or it can make things a bit difficult for some players when it comes to materia.

There's also a specific materia quest in the game right now that requires a lvl 19 or higher craft skill aside from cooking to start. Not sure what it is because I've only done a small amount of mining in the beta.

Edit: Not sure, but do weapons also have materia slots or is it just armor?

In 1.0 you needed to have high enough craft level to put materia on equipment. So if I was paladin and I wanted to put materia on a armor that was made by armor craft it would require a certain armor craft lvl depending on the lvl of the gear. Don't know if its still like that in 2.0

I found this:

Announced at the Square Enix Future of Final Fantasy E3 conference, it was confirmed that gamers who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be able to transition their accounts to the PlayStation 4 version when it’s released in 2014.

Source: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013...-coming-to-playstation-4-plus-the-e3-trailer/

Yeah I actually like that. Kinda weird that it's just 'a craft' at the appropriate level though. Can you sell items with materia affoxed to them? If not maybe it's just a way to make everyone level a craft.

I think this is just talking about the account being applicable to any platform. I sure hope it means I can install the PS4 client for free if I bought the PS3 version though.

It's the specific craft that made or can repair the item.
I think the 'any craft' is just for the quest, but you need a specific craft to affix the materia as stated by Xux:
I edited that part in afterward. :P

Yeah you can, gear only becomes bound to you after the first experience point you made while wearing it.

Is the combat as simple and boring as I've heard it to be?

It certainly isn't incredibly diverse but it does have a quick pace and some really nice animations. Certain enemies have AOE's and abilities you have to pay attention to in order to avoid. You also have some abilities that may trigger so you have to pay attention when they are ready. The chains will encourage you to push the limits of what you can handle while trying not to get killed.

There's room for improvement but it does not make the game unplayable by any means.

One more question; are we expecting the disc to come with a month of game time or anything? Or is that purchase just installing the client?

Aw hell no. Talk about hamstringing crafters. {No, thanks.}

I know other users could do it, but it would be limited to only tradable items.
Has it been confirmed that you can't meld someone else's soulbound gear? I didn't get to test melding yet.

Even if it's true, it's not a huge deal. Obtain the gear and materia you want to meld then trade them to a crafter. Let them try to multimeld. Regardless of success or failure, they can give what's left of your stuff back to you. If you're not happy with its meld status yet, don't use it--that way it stays unbound and you can have another meld attempted (gear is not BoE it's BoU--doesn't soulbind until you use it and gain EXP with it equipped). You'll just need to keep a stepping-stone piece of gear around in the meantime to use (a single meld, or a good dungeon or GC piece, for example). This actually isn't any different than 1.x--only a fool would try multimelding a key piece of equipment without a backup in case it exploded.

Good for crafters, good for people who like to SB for money, and still less hassle than failed melds exploding everything like they did in 1.x.

I was checking out the Amazon page for FF XIV and it says:

"A flexible class system that allows players to change to any of the eighteen different classes on the fly simply by changing their equipped weapon or tool"

That sounds pretty cool, so I can just deck out one character with all the classes I want to play and not need to make alts. I guess alts might still be useful for professions and would be fun for having different races.

You could be pretty much learn and do all the different professions as well. I believe the only thing for alts is just for different species and if you want to look like a pretty girl.
