Hmm. I'm level 27 and don't have anything called Cleave or really any attacks that hit everything. But at least now I know I should hit all enemies in the group a few times. (What does that do exactly?)

Though I have to say, even though I'm inexperienced, I'd never do the 'run on my own' thing. Hell, most of the time I don't even check the chests for loot. I play completely unselfish, I just don't know everything about the techniques.

No, I'm a Gladiator. Maybe I need to go back to Ul dah and do more of the class based quests...?

Use flash, and try to mark your mobs so everyone knows what target to fight first.

It could be difficult if there are a crowd of mobs and they're moving all over the place, and flash might miss them.

Your attacks will increase your enmity (there are bars on the left that you can check), so hitting the adds will get their attention.

Edit: beaten by a ninja.

Gah, still getting this retarded world is full message is maddening. Was the last botch update the only response had so far to this clusterfuck? I've had this for almost two weeks and it's amazing that I still haven't been able to play it properly.

Read your abilities. Some include a note for "Additonal Enmity". This means those abilities generate additional points of threat/hate/enmity/aggro on the monster. Usually 1 point of damage dealt = 1 point of threat/hate/enmity/aggro. Those abilities generate damage x2 or sometimes x3. This is how a tank stays ahead of the damage classes.
Are those why some of the attacks on my hot bar suddenly get a squiggly line around them? Because I noticed if I use certain attacks in a particular order, they do become more powerful, and I have been practicing/experimenting with that stuff.

I don't want to leave you guys with the impression I'm completely useless, we actually cruised through that dungeon, until the very end when I dropped. I actually thought we were doing pretty well because we cruised through that dungeon in about 30 minutes. The boss was just about dead when I went down. I'm just not up on all of this MMO terminology so I do realize how clueless I sound,

At any rate, I'll look online to try and bone up on this tank thing. See if there's a tanking for dummies kinda thing out there.

edit: By the way I'm playing on the PS3. Changing targets can be a bitch on the d-pad. That's probably the thing that gives me the most trouble.

Flash is your AoE hate skill.

Mark the target you'll be focusing on as 1 (you can drag the 1 mark sign from the Signs menu right onto your hotbar).

Pull with your shield throw, or simply move into melee range.

Face the mobs away from the party.

Hit them with Flash 2x/3x, then go into your single target rotation on your primary target, interspersing interrupts/cooldown buffs/whatever else you need to use.

Remark the next kill target as 1.

Add comes into the fight? Shield throw and bring it over, if its any duration into the fight, the other mobs will already be locked on your and you can do an enmity+ rotation on it once or twice to lock it onto you.

Tada, you are now a magic awesome tank.

Be aware that Flash does have a pretty short distance, so you want to cluster the mobs up first before you fire it off. If DPS are yanking mobs off you before you can even establish initial aggro, that's their problem, not yours. If your healer is yanking mobs off you, get them back on asap, but it shouldn't happen for anything other than uncontrolled adds.
I actually do most of this stuff already. I shield throw to bring enemies to me, I use flash to get them to face me, I try to pull enemies away from the healers and other support players, etc. etc.

However you lost me with the target 1 thing. I'm on PS3, so I'm not sure how that menu works on that system. There's no dragging here, I'm afraid. I've literally no idea how to mark targets.

edit: Nevermind, I found an easy way to do this on the PS3. I guess the target stuff i s buried in the hotbar menus.

Pro-Tip: Run up their ass when they do Bad Breath, never away, hell side step if you have too

I also position myself right in their face rather than the normal position they would naturally stop at due to their large hit box. Then you only have to move a very short distance to run behind them or on a 45 degree angle to get out of their cone attacks. This applies to any creature that has a huge hit box.

Interesting that most of you seem to be pulling with PLD. I guess it makes sense with the current link patterns that don't really reward picking away from a distance or chaining an area, but I miss good fun DD pulls.

What are the major differences between PLD and WAR, anyway? Sword and Board vs Axe?

The squiggly line means that if you use the ability, you get the "combo effect" detailed in the ability.

Also, at least on Marauder, all the tanking skills have "increased enmity" in the description. If you use skills like this, they generate a lot more hate towards you on the mob. This is why I rarely use Fracture as a Marauder - while it does decent damage, it doesn't have increased enmity.

If the "combo effect" doesn't state "increased enmity", you're most likely better off spamming skills that have enmity and occasionally padding that with the damage dealing skills if you feel like you have enough aggro.

The top five pullers I saw in FFXI were all BRDs.

I'm not actually, I'm playing a WAR. Giant axes for life :P

PLDs have better raw mitigation, WARs have better self healing/healthpools and a bonus to incoming healing. Warriors vs Death Knights, kind of.

Another small but important difference - PLDs have an on-gcd stun with no cooldown, WARs have an off-gcd stun with a cooldown. So more frequent but less reliable interrupts vs more reliable but less frequent interrupts. Both useful, just in different ways. PLDs also get shield swipe later, though that's slightly different.

If the "combo effect" doesn't state "increased enmity", you're most likely better off spamming skills that have enmity and occasionally padding that with the damage dealing skills if you feel like you have enough aggro.

To address this last point, you don't actually have to do any guessing or feeling at all - get into a fight with a single mob in a party, lock aggro, then look over at your party list.

Next to everyones name is a small bar, how filled that bar is shows exactly how far up the enmity table they are compared to you, and it even ranks them by number.

You can also look over at the mob list panel and it shows a color indicating how much hate a given mob has towards you.

The first lets you see exactly how you stand on enmity with any given mob, the latter lets you tell if you're in danger of losing any mob in a pack to a party member.

I find it easier to use those if you move them around on your screen, but I wish the enmity information could be separated entirely to put above your healthbar/below your feet. It's still handy. If you see you are miles ahead on threat on a single target boss, go into your heavier damage rotation/burn cooldowns to increase damage.

as an outsider looking in pld seems to be about damage mitigation/sustain and war seems to be about lifesteal/self-healing/huge hp pooll

Paladin looks more like my type of class, then. Was already leaning towards it because they look cooler.

i think i've heard the words dark knight, musketeer, and ninja throw around at some point since he took over 1.0 but they're probably a long time away at this point. probably first expansion territory

I hope they add a Thief job. Lay traps and steal.

edit: heres something to read

hell ya, really hope all 4 make it in. Dark Knight would be great.

I do hope they make the great swords bigger tho... they weren't big enough in 11.

Yup - exact same stuff. Ignoring mobs that are hitting DPS/heals in the face to run over to a treasure chest (I guess because he thinks whoever gets there gets the loot?), never saying ONE WORD, running into boss rooms ASAP without even looking to see if the rest of us are behind him, regularly just standing still, etc.

He acted as if he was by himself.

The NEVER SPEAKING is what gets to me the most I think. Like we're trying to correct his behavior, teach him to tag other mobs, don't bum-rush bosses, etc. And he just keeps doing it. Never responding. Maddening.

I know people run into people at 50 that have no idea WTF is going on, but I don't even see how people make it to 25-30.

sounds like one of those gold famer drones trying to level up a character for reasons. they react the same in all the games i've ever played. them and gold buyers are actively ruining the games.

Okay, time my my nightly update.

Well, I'm up to 36, went through Brayflox once, and I'm just a few story quests away from Titan.

That said, I think I'm going to go back and use Brayflox to practice up a bit. I feel like I've spent so much time on solo quests, that my tanking skills have become rusty. The party didn't wipe or anything, but there were a couple parts that got rough, and I cannot help but think they were at least partially my fault.

I'm probably being a bit overly self-conscious in a few respects, but, I really want people to enjoy playing with me, and that means being a good, if not excellent player. That means practice, on the actual multi-player portion of the game.

Besides that, Brayflox'll allow me to get some new armor. I'm getting a bit tired of the Chainmail armor I'm wearing right now, especially since I can't dye it. I'd love something with, a bit more pizzazz.

Hmm. Question: Any BLMs out there who've also taken Lancer up? I want to test something without spending a couple days poking mobs with a long stick.

Been enjoying the game so far on my boyfriend's computer, but I'm really hoping to be able to buy a digital PS3 copy. Any news on that front? I keep browsing the PSN store yet FFXIV: ARR has been taken out of the shelves. Nothing. Is there any other way to get a code? (I assume buying someone who isn't using it, I guess!)

Thanks very much in advance!

Need a group that'll grind Brayflox for Valor/battlemage gear~ :P
Asked some folks saying I wanted people who would do multiple runs for gear but the group I got bailed on me even though they said they wouldn't... :(

Guess I'll ask online again when I get back from work today, though most likely I'll give in and just do the duty finder...

Digital sales should be resumed soon as the server load issues are being fixed.

why not buy physical? you only need to have the disc in your drive one time.

Combination of HUD not updating and me not looking at map makes me idiot: I attacked the boss without the healer in Totorak.

I glitched the Duty, Honor, Country quest, me and the npc dude killed the gorgoyle and the masked mage and there were some other invisible npcs in the background (with only names), and the friendly npc started attacking them, so I went to take a shower, then he's standing around doing nothing >.>

Now I have to redo this long ass boring fight again, sigh.

So, wheres the best place to go for the final 5 levels?

I'm still yet to do the Stone Vigil, So I'm guessing another area opens up after that (or at least I hope it does, Coerthas is really out staying its weclome)

<--- Just destroyed the sh*t out of Sunken Temple with a PUG on my fifth attempt.

Only one of us -- the PLD -- had ever made it past Teratotaur; no deaths, no /quits, no drama.

Faith in humanity: Restored.

---

Also, does anyone know what's up with Chocobo Ranks?

Does he automatically rank up proportional to my level or do I actually have to summon him?

99% of the time I'm either grouped for Fates or queued in DF so I'm rarely able to keep him around.

You'll be in mor dhona & northern thanalan.

Can do Darkhold & Aurum Vale on way to 50.

Is there an option to turn off other players' pets, as well as the magic attacks from mages? It gets pretty crazy during FATEs, and sound clipping all over the place.

Thanks for the fast responses! And yes, I'd get physical but was hoping to just go for the digital download since I just want a way to log in PS3 on my account (since we already have a physical game, CE). Was just hoping not to have to double dip on physical copy. :3

It's almost hilarious how chaotic it becomes. I just wish I could target the FATE boss in the sea of humanity...lol

So, I've yet to figure this out... What's the difference between the different chat options, i.e. shout, yell, etc.?

Character config > Control > Character > Battle Effects settings

Everyone should be made aware of how much these can improve your framerate. I just put 'Others' to 'Limited' and I get a huge framerate improvement during FATEs. Whatever you feel like of course.
