I've been out of the gaming loop for a while but I can't wait for GOTY 2005 :D

I didn't dislike Xenosaga that much, but I actually heard the sequel was worse (from some Xenosaga fansite review), instead of fixing the problems of the first one. I'm going to at least rent it, although by now I have forgotten every single plot detail from the first one.

I LOVED the first game and if I only LIKE this one, I'll be satisfied....

Take my $50, Namco! Take it!!! :D

The more the love the first one, the more you'll be disappointed by this one. If you didn't know the entire staff changed. :)

I didn't enjoy the first game but I'm glad that the series has it's fans. Unfortunately this second one is different than the first and is actually worse (several JPN reviews). I hope it doesn't dissapoint the fans however.

Xeno fans, as a group, have pretty much proven that there is no possible way that they can be disappointed with anything. Xenosaga III could just be some guy who comes to your house and kicks you in the nuts until you hack up blood, and in between coughs they'd talk about how profound it all is.

Hometek should include the Mok-kos figure with Ep II just to drive the point home.

I'll wait until it's $20 or so. By the time I got the first XS it went down in price shortly after so I want revenge. -_-; Also the new "realistic" as opposed to anime look is downright silly. What took them so long in making XS-II anyway? I never bought into that "All 6 episodes will be released on the PS2" thing but still I figured they'd at least get 3 out. -_-??

I don't get you. Me and Bebpo are both HUGE xeno fans, and we acknowledge that XS Ep2 is a SHIT of a game. Complete and utter CRAP. It's fucking disappointing. If you mean everyone else looking forward to the US version, can you blame them? They haven't played it and are hoping it's good. We can warn them but in the end some people just want to find out for themselves. Stop being such a stuck up know-it-all and generalizing us.

You do realize that the entire Japanese XS fanbase hated epII and makes jokes daily about how the series has turned to crap at 2ch ^^;

I had never played episode 1. Will I miss much if I jump straight into episode 2?
You'll miss about thirty hours of cutscenes and ten of gameplay ALRIGHT OUCH OUCH OKAY XENOFANS I'LL STOP

The pre-order bonus (at GameStop & EBGames) for Episode II is a "Cinematic Disc" containing 4+ hours of cutscenes from the original game, so you'll be able to get caught up with the events of Episode I pretty quickly. :)

So what was wrong with X2? No spoilers!

Considering I think the first Xenosaga game did everything wrong (too much story, too little gameplay) and Baten Kaitos pretty much did everything right (balanced story and gameplay), I figure I might actually enjoy X2 when it comes around.

Ok first I would like to clarify that there were TWO teams at Monolithsoft, one working on Baten Kaitos and one working on XS Ep2. So any improvements you noticed in BK, do NOT apply to XS Ep2 sadly.

Now on to what was wrong. While I really liked XS Ep1 I can see where you're coming from. Too much story, too little gameplay. Ok, how about this for starters, XS Ep2 lasts 18-20 hours total. XS Ep1 had about 7 hours of cutscenes but it was also about 30+ hours for me. In comparison XS Ep2 has about 4 hours of cutscenes and the entire game is 20 hours or less. The writing is TERRIBLE in XS Ep2. Unlike in XS Ep1, nothing in XS Ep2 is ever fleshed out and none of the new characters are developed at all. They just appear, have a name (some don't even have names!) and do their stuff and that's it.

The gameplay has also taken a turn for the worse, the battle engine is terrible and annoying. I don't really want to go into detail because it would take a longass time to explain but let's just say the average XS Ep2 battle is twice as long as an Ep1 battle. >_< The cutscene music in XS Ep2 is still pretty good, but many tracks don't fit the actual scenes, they got another composer to do actual BGM music while you're in towns and dungeons though, and the tracks are TERRIBLE. They're like 80s arcade techno tunes which loop over and over driving you mad. It doesn't help that dungeons are still huge like they were in XS Ep1 except now you move even SLOWER because some exploration is done in mechs and the mechs move really slowly.

The minigames in XS Ep1 are also all gone, pity because they were so fun. In their place XS Ep2 has the G2 Campaign which is a series of sidequests stuff you do to unlock extra items and stuff. Sounds fun? Think again! Most of the "missions" involve you running around towns doing fetch quests for NPCs or something stupid like that. Most are boring and none of them have anything to do with the story, just made up boring problems the citizens have. :(

So to sum it up: Short game, bad writing, bad battle system, large dungeons + slow movement, terrible in-game BGM, retarded optional quests, underdeveloped characters.

Yeah XS Ep2 is pretty fucking disappointing. >_<

If you're a Xeno fan, I really can't trust your opinion, EVEN if you insist a Xeno title sucks. I'm sorry, but there are two fundamental truths in gaming: Shenmue and Xeno* titles completely, totally, irrefutably SUCK.

Ok so other than trolling this thread what other purpose do you have? I don't see you asking for anyone's opinion in the first place so no one would be interested in how much you trust their opinion. Furthermore, if it's a "fundamental truth" that all Xeno titles completely, totally and irrrefutably SUCK, then I would be right wouldn't I, and you would have to trust in what I say because otherwise it's breaking a fundamental truth in gaming! Oh noes! :lol :lol :lol

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day and all that.

Sorry, man, I can't imagine a big-budget RPG being worse than Xenosaga Ep. 1. You claim Ep. 2 is, but from where I stand, one turd having a few more peanuts than another doesn't mean a whole lot to me.

Yeah, except XS Ep2 is low-budget crap. :P

Well I love XG/XSep1 and Shenmue I/II so I guess you should never listen to anything I say :P

I liked story line and charakters in the first Xeno, but the game has one of the most boring combat system ever. Is it the same in Xeno2 or did they change it?

you say that, but it still has higher production values than most PS2 RPGs.

and it's also still better than suikoden 4...

staying out of this thread, otherwise. you guys are way too vitriolic to talk to on this topic.

I'd take boring/slow/uninspired games over painful/retarded/omgwtf games anyday.

what did i just say? no point in trying to talk about it. =)

Yeah you don't like Vagrant Story AND you're the worst reviewar evar! So there's really no point talking about it. :D

Ouch! I enjoyed ep. 1.

Thinking back to that review I read, some of their complaints about Episdoe 2 didn't bother me that much, and some of them I actually found to be an improvement (such as the change in character designs).

The gameplay-over-story people seem to forget the fact that Episode 1 had some pretty challenging dungeons and boss fights

I'll buy it. Shit, I've played through worse RPGs.

Just about to start a thread about Xenosaga. I just imported a US PS2 so im open to some RPGs that arnt released in EU

Im thinking about buying Xenosaga for the long cutscenes and story. But from what i've seen the gameplay parts look really dull, almost like ToS. If its anything like ToS, forget it, i dont want anything to do with it.

You think i should buy it? What about Sukudin 3? Or Star Ocean?

Thanks

ToS is nothing like Xenosaga.
Frankly, I enjoyed them both, but I've shown on many occasions I have no taste.

I haven't gotten to SO3 yet, but its questionably similar to ToS game-play wise.

And Suikoden III, I enjoyed that more than 2, which many consider the best, so once again, just pay me no mind.

Xenosaga and Tos are totally different in so many ways. Suikoden 3 is boring with a broken battle system. Star Ocean, from reviews, has a list of problems as well. If you want games with long cutscenes and story and little bu competent gameplay, try the metal gear series. Better yet, pick up some old PS1 RPGs like FF VIII or IX for what you seem to be looking for.

Suikoden 3 has its moments, but it's not always fun to get to these moments. It's worth giving it a chance if you can get it cheaply.

I'll pick it up when it's cheap, just like with Xenosaga ep 1. I enjoyed Xenosaga, and want to see how the story evolves. And even IF the game really sucks, the soundtrack, from what I've heard, is a lot better in ep 2 and it would probably be more expensive to import the soundtrack from Japan than getting the US version of the game. :P

I dunno, it sounds pretty bad, but then again...both duckroll and Bebpo HATED Star Ocean 3 (whereas I had an absolute blast playing it). Most fun I've had with an RPG in a long time (despite the poor story telling techniques). Kickass dungeons, fast paced and enjoyable battles, incredible music, etc. None of that seems to apply to XS2, though. :\

Yeah I think you've read what I said about SO3, I hated it but I think some parts of the game has merit. Some of the dungeons are great and the game is fast-paced. I just felt the battle system was broken and the story was complete ass. On the other end of the spectrum we have XS Ep2 where the battle engine isn't broken, just so annoying and sloooooow, and the storyline is great but the actual writing took a nosedive. Great mecha battle cutscenes though. I can easily see people having a blast playing SO3, if they can ignore the flaws and the story (which I can't) but -no one- can have a blast playing XS Ep2. :)
