the best thing about firefox (well one of the best) was the lack of popups... as of late, they've been everywhere. Whats the most effective fix?

Download Adblock (if you haven't already).
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox
When you get to a site with lots of pop ups sneaking past the built in blockers in Firefox, click on the Adblock word in the lower right corner of the firefox window. It will show you any blockable items on the page you're currently at. Look for anything from doubleclick.net, adserver blah blah, etc. Don't forget about swf files (for flash ads) and jscript files (those scripts are how they're getting past FF's internal blocker). If you notice a certain marketer is pushing the ads, used the wild card feature to block all adds from them. So you could add:
http://*.doubleclick.net/* to your filter and all doubleclick.net ads and data would be blocked.

Hope that helps!

The Popups Must Die extension can break legitimate popups (to the point you have to whitelist a site to allow any popups there, right?) though. "Click here for larger image" types of stuff, for example. PMD is a shotgun approach. (Not that that is a bad thing, per se).

I've just downloaded AdBlock - thanks for the recommendation. Is there a way to block ALL pop ups/pop under windows? Or do I have to manually block every one (or use wildcards on every url that appears?)

It's cool so far though...time to go to IGN and block all those annoying flash adverts!!

You have to change some about:Config settings to get it to work in 1.06, but it will. Go to the adblock creator's forums and check out their solutions.

I've tried that and Flash-based popups still get through. Anyone else had that experience?
haven't had problems yet. make sure you pick integer and not string. I picked string and it didn't save my setting.

Does no one pay attention to me?

When you get adblock, use filterset.g! It's a text file that blocks all kinds of ads.

Please get this.

And I've had adblock installed for ages, and I've had 1.06 installed since it came out, and adblock is still working like a charm.

There's a recommendation to get AdBlock Plus if you're on 1.06. If can be found here: http://bene.sitesled.com/adblock.htm

I haven't installed this, however.
