Not only have there been pop ups in firefox, but sometimes they launch IE and pop up there. It even downloaded some m00.exe thing without me knowing that ended up on my desktop. I did the address bar thing and I am using 1.02 but, the popups continue. Is there a new fix or is the golden age of Firefox over?

Sounds like you had a preexisting adware condition to me. I don't think it's possible for a web page in firefox to launch IE directly. IE launching on its own is pretty much a sign of adware.

1. Firefox developers are working on an update that will let you kill the new breed of pop-ups. It's in testing atm.
2. There are options you can set in about:config to kill them IIRC
3. There's a page with adblock filters you can import to kill most things (someone else should have the link)

Maharg's suspicion is probably a good one to follow up on...

Last time I brought this up some people here gave me a very good tip:
1) Get Adblock if you don't have it
2) Go HERE
3) Once you go to the website, read instructions.txt, and do what it says.
4) Say goodbye to popups

Stupidheads, adblock doesn't protect against these new popups, I have the latest adblock and the latest firefox and I still get popups. There was a beta popup blocker release a couple of days ago but that was way too strict, you couldn't even launch new windows by clicking links, aka. broken. But yeah, they're working on it.

that is the new experimental popup blocker.

the new popups are using provisions in flash and java to execute the popups. this blocks them. be warned though. this thing blocks ALL popups, even legitimate ones. if you really don't want popups, this will get rid of them, though there will be many occassions (and I mean many) where you will have to enable popups for a site. it is still being worked on, I believe to be smarter so not as many legitimate popups will be blocked when it actually goes live.

eventually this will be included in firefox and replace firefox's existing popup blocker.

it is the same problem as firefox. advertisers realized that all of the popup blockers were only scanning for http requests generated by javascripts. however both java and flash allow for popups to originate from them also. so until other browsers start preventing flash- or java-based popups from happening, those broswers will be susceptible.

in the meantime, firefox users can install the extension I linked to above.

It's a reskinned IE with a lot of great features. I've been using it for over a year and I never get spyware/adware/malware (I check with spybot and adaware regularly), aside from a few tracking cookies.

unfortunately I can't, because the new blocker doesn't distinguish between the types of popups. however, sites like (I believe) mmorpg.com, parts of ign.com, and anumber of others (can't remember what though) have all had popups come up on them.

also, it isn't the site that causes the popup. it is the advertiser. if the advertiser sticks a popup in the java or flash of their ad it will cause it. the original site has no control over it.

I understand that. I was just looking for sites that use advertisers with the new popups, ala zophar.net and the popunders I was getting a few weeks ago.
