Rupert Sanders (“Snow White And the Huntsman”) is directing the anime adaption, with lensing taking place in Wellington, New Zealand. Paramount Pictures will release the film in the U.S. on March 31, 2017. Press release details below.

The film, which is based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series of the same name, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, is produced by Avi Arad (“THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2,” “IRON MAN”), Ari Arad (“GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE”), and Steven Paul (“GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE”). Michael Costigan (“PROMETHEUS”), Tetsu Fujimura (“TEKKEN”), Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, whose animation studio Production I.G produced the Japanese "GHOST IN THE SHELL” film and television series, and Jeffrey Silver (“EDGE OF TOMORROW,” “300”) will executive produce.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

It's ScarJo in a wig, alright!

I can never say no to ScarJo

Warm up the cyberpunk, baby, I'm ready!

Edit:

Just saw the director.

Warm up the TV for when it hits Netflix, baby!

I mean, it's Scarlett with short blue hair, she doesn't resemble the Major at ALL. Those caucasian facial features man.

They should have hired a japanese actress.

They've got a solid foundation to work on so hopefully they don't fuck it up. Do we have word on the rest of the cast? I haven't followed this closely.

How would this have gotten an American release then?

Urghhh...the entire ppl involved doesn't seem promising.

I'm surprised Rupert Sanders can still get directing job after Snow White scandal.
Being well connected do pays in hollywood.

I love Johansson but I hope this movie gets rightfully bashed for the whitewashing when it is released.
And Rupert Sanders, really?
Fuck you Hollywood.

whitewashin'

Ehhh.

The only way this movie would not be a huge whitewash is if it were made in Japan.

I think there are legitimate arguments to be made for a foreign adaptation not adhering to the races/sexes of the original.

Thin line though.

I thought Scarjo was a great choice when it was announced, but I dunno anymore. I just see Black Widow.

Thats interesting, because Scarlet Johanson never did it for me as Black Widow. Like Captain, she always seemed too young.

She almost works here I think.

Why do people keep saying whitewashing, there is nothing Asian about the original character features.

I wouldn't having chosen ScarJo though.
