First look at ScarJo as the Major in Ghost in the Shell

Doesn't the fact that she's a full body prosthetic make her race moot? She's been in a cyber body since birth. Hell even she's not sure if she's human or a just really good AI. That's why the series is called Ghost in the Shell.

She uses a common body prosthetic design, one that would blend in with the inhabitants of Japan. ScarJo is not someone who would "blend in" in Japan.

Say what? I don't recall that being the case in any of the GITSes I've seen or read. Is that from Arise? That's an incredibly stupid idea.

Depends on the setting of the movie. If it's not really in Japan then there is no lore related issue that would say she needed to be a Japanese person, and actually even if the story said she was literally a Japanese born person residing in America or even some fictional international city in the middle of the pacific, her shell being ScarJo still wouldn't be a problem for the lore. This is a politics/representation issue, the GITS template itself is definitely flexible enough to take any number of these story, character and setting variations.

Why only Japanese people that live in America what about the rest of the western world...

You know what I mean, dawg. But the film is specifically an American production featuring American actors which is why I said America.

This implies all Japanese people living in America have an issue with the casting.

Did I say that? The point is that the historical context behind whitewashing is an american/western thing, not a Japanese thing.

The more I think about this, the more it annoys me.

Paramount could have made a better effort to quash the yellowface rumors by saying "That rumor is untrue, and if you publish that we're going to sue you into the ground." Instead they said "It wasn't for HER" in the most defensive tone possible, and basically gave April Reign, Nerds of Color and the like a BFG9000 with ammo and said "please kill whatever hype and marketing we had planned".

Nerds of Color is going to make Scarlett Johansson a punchline with this film the way they made Emma Stone a punchline with Aloha, despite the apologies she made over taking that role.

I'm telling you folks, it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

I guess some photos leaked, look to be early prep for publicity stills:

Apparently they're going to be using some of the original 1995 score for the film.

Looks a lot better than I thought it would tbh.

Edit: They are going to get crucified for fucking up Batou's eyes.

Now that's a real reason to be hopeful about this project if true.

Yeah a few months ago at the Anime Expo they had a panel for the film with Avi Arad in attendance. He confirmed that they want to use some of the score and since Kenji Kawai visited the set and had a positive experience it was 99.99% chance of happening.

Other bits from that panel:
  • Production I.G was heavily involved in the pre-production.
  • Daisuke Aramaki will only speak in Japanese in the film
  • The city the live action film takes place is left "ambiguous" but the city feels more like it was depicted in GITS than a generic "Sci Fi future city".
  • Tachicomas may appear..
  • Filmed mostly in New Zealand because WETA is handling the visual FX, props and sets and so everything was available to the production there. A lo of the film is practical FX vs CGI.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the eyes this would be pretty damn good. But...how do you fuck up Batou's eyes this badly? Low expectations getting lower.

Kenji Kawai score + those characters basically mean I am sold.

Because the photo on the right looks bloody daft, and I can't imagine a single design were it wouldn't look worse in a live action context. :P

There better be. Was this stated in a "we're considering this" type manner or like a tease where they're heavily hinting they are in it but won't outright confirm yet?

More of a tease I guess. Arad didn't have any footage, this was like 2-3 months ago, so he was just talking at the panel and I think filming was done by then?

I hope they add the eyes. Though those pictures look nearly press-ready.

What? Dude that's Batou. That's what he looks like. The fact that he chooses to keep his "bloody daft" looking ranger eyes in a world where he could easily get similar but cosmetically pleasing eyes is a part of what makes him Batou. I mean...this is Hollywood. They could make goggle eyes work.

Aside from the eyes, they're really nailing the look. I'm not sure why that gives me confidence in the end product, but it does.

That's all I needed to hear. I'm on board, full speed ahead.

Those are not bad pics.

Reusing the original score is smart.

You just know Scarjo is going to be too stuck up to go nude, even though that's like a consistent trait in the character.

ScarJo has gone nude in other movies.

She won't go nude in this one because this is for sure going to be a PG-13 movie.

Is this a joke?

Edit: It's a PG-13 movie. She has done full frontal nudity in work that actually called for it. Nudity is probably not necessary for this film. Also, not wanting to be jerk-bait doesn't make you "stuck up" in the first place.

Also, for future reference: If there is a movie, and you think it NEEDS nudity, it is essentially NEVER the actor's fault if it is absent. That's not how films are made.

Batou being white doesn't bother me as much, considering he kind of always looked like a white dude. Hope that his cyber eyes are added in post. No complaints about Aramaki.

Still skeptical on this, though. If they're using the original score then that means that there are people involved in the production that really do care about the source material. I just hope we don't get some kind of mediocre middle ground where the people close to production are trying to pay respect the the source material and make a good film but that the higher ups demand alterations in the mistaken belief that those changes will help the film reach a broader audience. Or that they make a shitton of cuts in order to put the movie on more screens or something. I'm kind of sick of that being a thing.

It being PG-13 makes me scared that they're just going to make it a mindless action movie without trying to explore the themes found in the anime.
