First look at ScarJo as the Major in Ghost in the Shell

It being PG-13 makes me scared that they're just going to make it a mindless action movie without trying to explore the themes found in the anime.

Not necessarily. They can still have meditations on Kant, Descartes, and other thinkers without going into R-rated territory.

I guess some photos leaked, look to be early prep for publicity stills:

Apparently they're going to be using some of the original 1995 score for the film.

PLEASE have a techno "making of a cyborg 3 reincarnation" remix for the trailer in theaters. PLEASE. Can you imagine the hype that would shoot up just hearing a distorted version of "Reincarnation" play as badass shit is happening, complete with the chants?

That would get me hyped and optimistic for the final product.

Also, i'm glad Kenji Kawaii gave them his blessing for using parts of his score in the movie. His work is basically god level to me, including FSN06 and UBW2010's soundtracks.

If they do this right...come on...i think i'm getting more and more optimistic with this news

As much as I want to hate everything about this film, using some of the original score makes me hopeful. Gotdamn, hopefully it has enough visual heft to work the score.

Thank the lord! I was fearing a dubstep soundtrack.

Also the leaked photos ScarJo looks solid, maybe a little to much black.

The first movie is fine alone. Movie 2 goes way too far into babble territory without being compelling, great production values though.

Innocence looks great in HD, but yeah, it's not as compelling as the first. So many quotes. Such pretentiousness.

Hey look! Something we agree on!
I really like Innocence. :(

Having just rewatched both seasons of Stand Alone Complex for the 4th time, I'm on a bit of a GiTS high, so I might have to revisit the films, too. Still skeptical of this adaptation, but at least we now know it will at least have its soundtrack going for it.

Was thinking the same thing. SAC too.

I've watched the series so many times, I've lost count. I really prefer the series to the movies. If they use some of the music from the first movie, that would be great, but I would have died if they got Yoko Kanno to do some music.

Looks a lot better than I thought it would tbh.

Edit: They are going to get crucified for fucking up Batou's eyes.

His eyes would look soooo dumb in live action.

Dude would look like this.

Yeah a few months ago at the Anime Expo they had a panel for the film with Avi Arad in attendance. He confirmed that they want to use some of the score and since Kenji Kawai visited the set and had a positive experience it was 99.99% chance of happening.

Other bits from that panel:
  • Production I.G was heavily involved in the pre-production.
  • Daisuke Aramaki will only speak in Japanese in the film
  • The city the live action film takes place is left "ambiguous" but the city feels more like it was depicted in GITS than a generic "Sci Fi future city".
  • Tachicomas may appear..
  • Filmed mostly in New Zealand because WETA is handling the visual FX, props and sets and so everything was available to the production there. A lo of the film is practical FX vs CGI.

Ooh, nice.
Loving the sound of them using some of the music from the movie too, didn't not expect that but it would be great. Wish they'd use some of Kanno's music as well.

I'm curious how the Aramaki thing of speaking only Japanese is going to play for serious interaction.

I'd imagine they'd add his eyes in post, no?

That's what I'm thinking too.

ScarJo looks right on. I really like that image.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Innocence is boring, but so pretty to look at.

Definitely slow though I still liked it quite a bit, though not as much as the other stuff, still so glad I got on blu-ray atleast for the visuals.
Also the end part is pretty exciting when the Major briefly returns to kick ass in that other robot body, was so glad to hear McGlynn there.

Aside from the eyes, they're really nailing the look. I'm not sure why that gives me confidence in the end product, but it does.

Pretty much this at the moment for now. I'm stunned.

The assault on Locus Solus is PHENOMENAL. The soundtrack and the visuals just come together so perfectly. It's a good climax. Unfortunately, when I first saw it, it was only subbed and the movie stay subbed for a long time. Then the blu-ray came out with the SAC voice actors. It was great hearing them again.

Still the best.

Yeah.

Yeah, I absolutely loved that part. I don't remember if I saw the sub first anymore since I've since seen it a whole bunch of times dubbed (and a couple subbed). I love that dub cast so much.

I like it too lol, it's got some really cool visual stuff and the mind hack section is trippy as hell. The first movie is just better :P

As for Batou's eyes, they'd look better with the cybernetic parts. No one is asking for mechanical googly eyes but just mechanical coverings. Which looks better, I'd actually argue he looks a lot worse without. Otherwise it's not bad.

Batou looks like dogshit.

Kawai music? I read that and think of them just mimicking the opening credits. Hopefully they actually use his music cause the whole thing is awesome.

Damn. When I read they'd reuse part of the original score I immediately thought of Yokko Kano's sublime Stand Alone Complex' soundtrack. Not a big fan of the 1995 movie here.
