First look at Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling & Mia Goth

Starfighter is a standalone film not connected to previous Star Wars movies or characters from the so-called Skywalker Saga, the films revolving around Luke Skywalker and his father, Anakin.

But there is, of course, the Star Wars timeline that must be followed, and Starfighter takes place approximately five years after the events of 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

50/50 on this.

- Disney-era Star Wars has pretty much sucked except for Rogue One and Andor
+ Ryan Gosling is great and I've enjoyed a lot of his movies
- Shawn Levy hasn't directed anything good ever?
+ A Star Wars movie focused on starfighters and space battles instead of Jedi is right up my alley
- But apparently Gosling's character is a Jedi?
+ There's been hints at a vibe shift at Disney (them actively looking for new IPs that appeal to men and boys) lately
- Kathleen Kennedy is still in charge

Could go either way, honestly. I'll expect it to be trash and be pleasantly surprised if it's the first Star Wars movie worth watching since Rogue One (which was borderline, to be fair.)

Stepping away from the established time periods and characters is a good move. But it being directed by Shawn Levy doesn't have me feeling optimistic.

Meanwhile, you may be wondering who is shooting this movie for director Shawn Levy, and I can exclusively report that Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda will serve as the DP on Starfighter. He won his Oscar for Life of Pi and was also nominated for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
More recently, Miranda shot Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie for director Joseph Kosinski, which should give you some idea of what Levy is going for — visually, at least — in Starfighter, which will hit theaters on May 28, 2027.

Makes this pretty explicitly a "Star Wars Top Gun" play, so I'll add another "+" row to my thought earlier lol.

Likely that the movie will look good and have some dogfights worth watching on YouTube if nothing else.

I have a soft spot for Star Wars dogfighting, and there's been some good shorts to come out of that space. Would rather watch these than any Jedi lightsaber battles 🤷‍♂️

Doesn't hurt that they both portray the Empire as the good guys / not ridiculous mustache-twirling Space Nazis

Still a believer in Zahn's depiction of the Empire vs. Disney's

Ok ok ok but will the movie be black & white though?

Maybe it should. Do a Kurosawa style samurai movie set in the Star Wars universe.

The Rise of the Skywalker was a fever dream.

I never saw that "Hunted" short before. If more of Star Wars was like that after the Disney acquisition I'd probably still be a fan.
Same here brought back nostalgic feelings, something the shitquels failed to do. I'll watch this maybe but mainly for Mia Goth. I have no faith in star wars ever being good again
