Fuck I love working out.

There's nothing better than letting out that last shogun grunt over my blaring music as I throw the barbell right before I get caught in my own immaculate reflection showing me my pumped bod.

So last Friday was a horrible day. I didn't go to the gym until late (past 10PM). I didn't get to eat all day - I was down 2 pounds on the scale. And not surprisingly, my lifts suffered. It was the first time in my Smolov experience that I missed reps.

I was supposed to do this:
3x285
3x330
4x375
4 sets x5x395

But I failed on the 3rd set of 5, with only 4 reps. I racked it, and waited about 1 minute, and made myself get the 5th rep. Then on the 4th set, I got pinned on the bottom. Dead in the water. I was so pissed! Then I started to doubt myself over the weekend, thinking I was overworking myself.

I fought through that negative thinking, and starting shoving food in my mouth all weekend.

Today, I'm only down 1 pound and was supposed to do this:
3x265
3x310
3x350
5x5x395

A little less total weight, but more reps @ 395. It was difficult but I did it! I'm pumped again.

2 more weeks of Smolov Intense. Today's reps put me at a "rep max" of 460. By the end of next week, it will be 475, which is what I'm hoping for on testing day.

Those are very major things. Going too late when your body may be tired from all day and not eating enough will directly impact your lifting, I can sympathize.

Anyways, today I took the advice and did curls 12/10/8. And I immediately felt the pump from them, my biceps were bulging too; however it was a bit more difficult than the 5/5/5 for sure.

That's pretty amazing that you've been doing the Smolov all this time and only now have missed a rep!

Yeah I should have waited until Saturday but I knew I had to get back under the bar today so I wanted 2 days off. Oh well, we all do dumb things sometimes.

Anyone know of videos of women who have been doing strength training a while? Or personal experience? Trying to explain to some female friends that the "toning" high rep low weight stuff is probably not doing much for them, and maybe might even increase muscle size (per the Rippetoe rep chart), which is not what they want at all. I thought I'd read that most women can do beginning strength training and not worry about bulking up, unless they have hormone issues. But obviously I'm not a woman and I don't have any women friends who have strength trained a long time, so maybe I'm wrong.

Tried the tongue technique today during my workout...yeah, that shit works. Couldn't get my mouth open for the life of me. And I definitely felt more stable during each exercise.

Check some of the logs on elitefts.com, Jen Comas comes to mind.

Is there any true benefit to working out in the morning and in the afternoon in one day?

The true reason I ask is that I'm being lazy and I want to put off my routine for tomorrow. I still want to go over all my workouts, so is the effect working out today similar to doing 2 sessions tomorrow?

Could you describe what you did exactly? I had trouble hearing him cuz I can't turn the volume up at work. Just press your tongue hard against the top of your mouth?

Just wanted to say that I'm 2 days a way from having been a full month on GOMAD.

The results are staggering. This past week or two I've only been working out once or twice a week and have been struggling to eat + finish my gallon because I recently started summer courses (calculus II) and I'm busy. So my results will slow, but they're there.

But I've more than doubled my squatting weight, I'm noticeably bigger, I've gained about 25 lbs., and every single muscle of mine has gotten stronger, and you can visually tell.

I hope to be on this diet at least one more month (of which I probably won't gain as much weight because of how busy I'll be) but wow, GOMAD has really made a difference in my life. Never before have I been able to gain weight--it was too much trouble, too much money to buy all that food, and never has working out been so fun and rewarding. I'm actually getting results.

I'm very pleased. I've gone from 150 lbs. (6'3") to 175 lbs. I'm hoping to reach 200 lbs. before I finish the diet.

Very nice. I'm not sure that's what I'm looking for. Looks like those ladies are pro bodybuilders? Certainly much lower body fat than most people. That look isn't the typical result of just strength training, is it? If it is, I will have to include it, but it'll pretty much sink my whole premise.

I can appreciate the look, but it's not what my friends are after. They just want to look "fit" but not muscular.

Anyone have any good cardio based exercises that are okay to do in a second floor apartment as to not piss off the people underneath?
I don't understand why people want to get all sweaty in their own apartments, but if pressed to do cardio indoors (like at a hotel with no gym), I'm a fan of doing a circuit of different calisthenics: push ups (different versions), turkish get ups, burpies, air squats, lunges, plank, side plank, whatever. Do as many reps as you want for like 3 sets, or do them as tabatas. Rest very minimally. You'll get a great cardio workout, as intense as you want, and you shouldn't make much noise. If someone listens in on you, it'll just sound like you're masturbating.

All,

I am on week 2 of Couch to 5K and am liking it so far, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for workouts to do on my off days from running. Something that doesn't kill my legs and helps me lose weight.

I have p90x, so I was considering doing kenpo x on my Tuesday and Thursday off day (Kenpo is the martial arts style workout). Would this be good to do, or do you all have other suggestions for what I should do outside of a gym?

That's incorrect. It's good the change programs when progress stalls. Progress is only a function of how the body recovers from the stress placed upon it.

Ok Bros, I'm about to start my journey on weighloss and fitness at the local gym. Last time I was there I developed a horrible case of plantar wars which I assume I acquired in the showers. After several months of intensive treatment I managed to get rid of them. Naturally I don't want a repeat of that lovely experience. What do you boys wear on your feet instead of walking barefoot?

Also, for those that have been lucky and never had an experience with warts, don't be dumb. Cover your feet. You may look a bit tacky but in the end it will be worth it.

I showed these to my GF who's about the same weight/height and wants to start deadlifting (we did a 5x5 thing today at the Y) and she's like "I wanna be like her, that's intense"

The guide I looked at said 165 for my weight but I'm a tad out of shape and 75~ was heavy enough for me for 25 lifts. A "row" deadlift was much easier for me though.

I think sports science are a crucial element to modern body building.

Creatine - Definitely works. That ATP/ADP reserve really does add to your explosive anaerobic workout. I feel like it adds 1-2 reps to your workout. It also does fill your body out a little bit more with all the water weight.

Multi-Vitamins - Just a good thing to have around.

Fish Oil / Lax Seed Oil - Mentioned in OP. But like vitamins, it is a different element of all around body maintenance.

ZMA - I have dabbled with zing magnesium aspartate. It is supposed to increase your testosterone levels. But I can not really say it worked.

Nitrous Oxide - Again I have dabbled in these, can not say it really has an effect. However, if you go with BSM's NO2 Explode. Their added formula really does provide an extra pump at the gym. Let's say an exta .8% horse power!

Beta Alanine - Several athletes swear by this. It really is supposed to keep your muscles from fatigue during workout. One of those things I sort of use, but can not say I fully endorse it.

L-Glutamine - Similar to above.

I'll just reinforce what Ace 8095 said - Starting Strength will require great adaptation, and so long as it is successful staying on the program is recommended. Add five pounds to every movement in every workout session and you'll find that your muscles will stay confused as fuck, lol. Linear progression is legit, muscle confusion is suspect.

I've been so out of lifting this summer. Finally, finally, getting back into it. Lost about 10 lbs of weight in the past 6-7 weeks of limited lifting, barely been going once a week until just this past week. Feeling much better already with my lifting though; well below my previous records, but working back quickly towards them.

I'm also integrating more stretching into my routine. Silly question perhaps, but can anyone recommend a good brand/style/location to purchase a yoga mat? I'm not sure what to look for in one. I mostly want to use it with my foam roller if that makes a difference.

I myself can't wait till after EVO to get a reboot on my program. I'm just kinda going through the motions atm. Just making sure that I am not losing muscle/gaining fat. Maintenance, if you will.

Come August, I be ready to do it up all over again.

Talking about individual supplementation is always welcomed, but given the sheer amount of snake oil in the supplement industry, I'm not bothered by it's underrepresentation in the OP.

For instance, in the list you gave, I'm amicable towards creatine and fish oil supplementation as both have been proven to be very beneficial. I'm on the fence or indifferent to multivitamins, ZMA and Beta Alanine. L-Glutamine and NO supplementation, on the other hand, both have controversial claims about their efficacy and the former has been flat-out blasted in several studies. I linked to them in the previous thread, but I might dig them up if needed.

Most lifters are better served by simply eating clean and lifting heavy rather than getting bogged down by the nuances of the supplement industry.

I did nitrous oxide in college. It's super intense. Feels like time is compressing.

Ok, I just needed to try it and now I get it. My jaw was getting pretty tense during squats. The trick even works to try to keep the head straight during side planks, although I'm never exactly sure which direction is neutral in that position.

There was a guy in my old gym exactly like this. I mean I know there are plenty of guys out there like this, but there was one guy EXACTLY like this... he also did my old time favorite... sitting at the bench/machine/rack/whatever for like 2-4 minutes between sets just staring off into space.

I am so fucking happy to be out of that environment. for every decent guy you find at the big box gym I swear to god there are 100 that I wouldn't get within 20 miles of outside of it.

Alright guys, I need your help on food. Two part question her

Part 1. Here's the deal, I have some mental block that lets me eat healthy during the week, but once I hit Friday I suddenly feel like I don't want anything I have at home and I end up eating out all weekend. So basically I am screwing myself out of how well i ate all week every weekend. What do you guys do, or cook, that is cheap and healthy on the weekends, but is also delicious?

I live by myself so I don't want things that are like 15 ingredients and will cost me a ton, as I want to spend as little as possible on food per week.

Part 2. Here is my average weekday food schedule. Is this good? I was told I need to add some more calories, what do I add?

Breakfast: Chobani Greek yogurt & black coffee.
Snack: Almonds
Lunch: 1/3 bag of salad mix (the mixes that come with all the stuff in the bag, bag is about 400 calories total), plus a banana usually.
Snack: Almonds
Dinner: Usually either a chicken breast + a bag of steam-able veggies, or 3 eggs, turkey bacon, and a veggie added in (omelet sort of thing).

So I may not be eating enough calories, but I am usually not really hungry after any meal (due to the snacks I assume) and am not sure what to add when.

For workouts now I am doing Couch to 5k, so I run for 20-25 minutes 3 times a week.

Thanks all!
