It's not the gum, per se. People can chew gum. The problem is, the guy that normally chews gum is wearing:
Ed Hardy sweat pants
Ed Hardy shirt
Makes this "OHWAH" sound with every rep, every time
Chews gum with his mouth open
Stands in peoples way
Has a friend with him, that looks the same, on the other side of the gym that he yells at
Says "brah" a lot
Has on a fitted cocked to the left or right 45 degrees
Is orange tan
Pulls up his shirt to look at himself in the mirror, constantly
Has his girfriend spot him on bench with weight he cannot lift
Curls in the squat rack
So when Alien hears "gum" that dude is, I imagine, what he thinks of and he goes into Hulk X-Factor 3 rage mode.
deadbeef said:So last Friday was a horrible day. I didn't go to the gym until late (past 10PM). I didn't get to eat all day - I was down 2 pounds on the scale. And not surprisingly, my lifts suffered. It was the first time in my Smolov experience that I missed reps.
I was supposed to do this:
3x285
3x330
4x375
4 sets x5x395
But I failed on the 3rd set of 5, with only 4 reps. I racked it, and waited about 1 minute, and made myself get the 5th rep. Then on the 4th set, I got pinned on the bottom. Dead in the water. I was so pissed! Then I started to doubt myself over the weekend, thinking I was overworking myself.
I fought through that negative thinking, and starting shoving food in my mouth all weekend.
Today, I'm only down 1 pound and was supposed to do this:
3x265
3x310
3x350
5x5x395
A little less total weight, but more reps @ 395. It was difficult but I did it! I'm pumped again.
2 more weeks of Smolov Intense. Today's reps put me at a "rep max" of 460. By the end of next week, it will be 475, which is what I'm hoping for on testing day.
That's pretty amazing that you've been doing the Smolov all this time and only now have missed a rep!deadbeef said:So last Friday was a horrible day. I didn't go to the gym until late (past 10PM). Yeah I should have waited until Saturday but I knew I had to get back under the bar today so I wanted 2 days off. Oh well, we all do dumb things sometimes.Saadster said:Those are very major things. Going too late when your body may be tired from all day and not eating enough will directly impact your lifting, I can sympathize.
Anyways, today I took the advice and did curls 12/10/8. And I immediately felt the pump from them, my biceps were bulging too; however it was a bit more difficult than the 5/5/5 for sure.

Trying to explain to some female friends that the "toning" high rep low weight stuff is probably not doing much for them, and maybe might even increase muscle size (per the Rippetoe rep chart), which is not what they want at all. I thought I'd read that most women can do beginning strength training and not worry about bulking up, unless they have hormone issues. But obviously I'm not a woman and I don't have any women friends who have strength trained a long time, so maybe I'm wrong.
Could you describe what you did exactly? I had trouble hearing him cuz I can't turn the volume up at work. Just press your tongue hard against the top of your mouth?Domino Theory said:Tried the tongue technique today during my workout...yeah, that shit works. Couldn't get my mouth open for the life of me. Yes yes yes. That's the stuff. I'm going to thoroughly review all of her videos just to make sure I know what information I am passing on.
Oh goddamn.

Awesome! 2 Months is best, some can do 3. I go on it yearly. The Lamp said:Just wanted to say that I'm 2 days a way from having been a full month on GOMAD.
The results are staggering. This past week or two I've only been working out once or twice a week and have been struggling to eat + finish my gallon because I recently started summer courses (calculus II) and I'm busy. So my results will slow, but they're there.
But I've more than doubled my squatting weight, I'm noticeably bigger, I've gained about 25 lbs., and every single muscle of mine has gotten stronger, and you can visually tell.
I hope to be on this diet at least one more month (of which I probably won't gain as much weight because of how busy I'll be) but wow, GOMAD has really made a difference in my life. Never before have I been able to gain weight--it was too much trouble, too much money to buy all that food, and never has working out been so fun and rewarding. I'm actually getting results.
I'm very pleased. I've gone from 150 lbs. (6'3") to 175 lbs. I'm hoping to reach 200 lbs. before I finish the diet.

This should work. EDIT: That shit he's doing with the ball, hurts. But it will clear up knee pain in a snap.Saadster said:So I have this pain above my right knee in my quad, it was probably from the squats I did today. Any advice?

Very nice. I'm not sure that's what I'm looking for. Looks like those ladies are pro bodybuilders? Certainly much lower body fat than most people. That look isn't the typical result of just strength training, is it? If it is, I will have to include it, but it'll pretty much sink my whole premise.Veezy said:Uh....... oh my god this maybe?!?!?
Girls repping 135 on the squat like it's nothing. So damn beautiful.
I don't understand why people want to get all sweaty in their own apartments, but if pressed to do cardio indoors (like at a hotel with no gym), I'm a fan of doing a circuit of different calisthenics: push ups (different versions), turkish get ups, burpies, air squats, lunges, plank, side plank, whatever. Do as many reps as you want for like 3 sets, or do them as tabatas. Rest very minimally. You'll get a great cardio workout, as intense as you want, and you shouldn't make much noise. If someone listens in on you, it'll just sound like you're masturbating.h3nriqu3 said:Anyone have any good cardio based exercises that are okay to do in a second floor apartment as to not piss off the people underneath?

That's incorrect. It's good the change programs when progress stalls. Progress is only a function of how the body recovers from the stress placed upon it.Scrow said:i heard that it's good to mix up your exercises a bit so your body doesn't get "used" to it
Cheap pair of flip flops?Rocket Punch said:Ok Bros, I'm about to start my journey on weighloss and fitness at the local gym. Last time I was there I developed a horrible case of plantar wars which I assume I acquired in the showers. After several months of intensive treatment I managed to get rid of them. Naturally I don't want a repeat of that lovely experience. What do you boys wear on your feet instead of walking barefoot?
Also, for those that have been lucky and never had an experience with warts, don't be dumb. Cover your feet. You may look a bit tacky but in the end it will be worth it.
I showed these to my GF who's about the same weight/height and wants to start deadlifting (we did a 5x5 thing today at the Y) and she's like "I wanna be like her, that's intense"OpinionatedCyborg said:This should inspire your girlfriend and girl friends:

I'll just reinforce what Ace 8095 said - Starting Strength will require great adaptation, and so long as it is successful staying on the program is recommended. Add five pounds to every movement in every workout session and you'll find that your muscles will stay confused as fuck, lol. Linear progression is legit, muscle confusion is suspect.Scrow said:i heard that it's good to mix up your exercises a bit so your body doesn't get "used" to it
Talking about individual supplementation is always welcomed, but given the sheer amount of snake oil in the supplement industry, I'm not bothered by it's underrepresentation in the OP.Shikamaru Ninja said:No supplements portion?
I did nitrous oxide in college. It's super intense. Feels like time is compressing.Shikamaru Ninja said:Nitrous Oxide - Again I have dabbled in these, can not say it really has an effect.
Ok, I just needed to try it and now I get it. My jaw was getting pretty tense during squats. The trick even works to try to keep the head straight during side planks, although I'm never exactly sure which direction is neutral in that position.Domino Theory said:Tried the tongue technique today during my workout...yeah, that shit works. Here's her doing some squats. BTW, she's 71kg and probably strong as hell.
Here's her getting out of the pool.
Girl is sexy and strong. What a woman should be.
Finally, here's a particularly cute girl doing a 105.5k, with body weight, chin up.
There was a guy in my old gym exactly like this. I mean I know there are plenty of guys out there like this, but there was one guy EXACTLY like this... he also did my old time favorite... sitting at the bench/machine/rack/whatever for like 2-4 minutes between sets just staring off into space.Veezy said:Cooter,
