Florida Gov. Declares State Of Emergency Over Hurricane Irma (Up: clean-up begins)

Stay safe florida GAF.

I'm glad that I live an place on earth that practicly doesn't know what a real storm is.

Yeah, I've lived inland all my life and while wed get the occasional storm or tornado resulting in flooding and property damage, its nothing like the shit you deal with on the coasts

Keep seeing people saying to evacuate online.... I don't know a single person planning on leaving down here. Shuttering up and hunkering down, but maybe it's because so many have lived through multiple storms and our homes in FL are not made of sticks? We are fairly in land so flooding wont be that bad.

Yeah wait until you hear what hurricane lightning actually sounds like.

That particular tracker does not really indicate the turn to the north in the Florida Straits that just about every forecast model shows will occur.

The next NHC forecast update should be very enlightening. That one stops right before we get a good indication if they see any kind of turn happening or not.

I called my grandparents this morning and they're heading to my uncle's house who's more inland.

Worried about my father, though. He's in Antigua until next week and no one get a hold of him.

In Tampa. Live about a block off the bay in an older house. Hope our lucky streak of not getting hit directly doesn't end.

Stay safe, everyone.

"Does the government have the power to control the weather? What are your thoughts?"

Talking about the hurricanes coming and the ones that came

One guy response was he finds it strange that Harvey and Katrina came around the same date.

Umm dude its something called Hurricane season

Hopefully WDW's hotels are a bit better prepared this time around. The meals they were offering (and the prices they were charging) were ridiculous IIRC. That being said many of the resorts are essentially solid blocks of concrete so should be safe at least.

Goddamnit. Hurricanes aren't very dangerous as far inland as I am, but going multiple days or weeks without power is really shitty.
We got hit last year, we should be up for a break...

Well I clicked your profile and saw you live in Jax...my family lived in Fleming island for 2 years and now my parents live in Saint Augustine (I'm back in Orlando tybg). Tbh those kind of thoughts aren't something I would put past anyone in the state, let alone an area like jax😭

I'm on the other side of the bay and in a pretty old house myself. Our house and neighborhood are all well above sea level so I hope that helps if there is flooding. All of the maps I've checked say my house is 42 feet above sea level which I think is pretty high for this part of florida.

I can really recommend travel insurance lol. I spent 90 mins on the phone but got the flights changed no problem, the rental car as well. Actually had to change hotels because the original hotel's prices almost doubled for some reason towards the end of the month, but just got the hotel right next door. It might not be quiiite as nice but it'll be fine. Don't plan on being in the hotel much anyway. Hopefully the worst of it veers away.

Seems like the coast of FT Lauderdale and Miami would be super vulnerable to a storm like this... I imagine these buildings and hotels are built to power through something like this.

My parents are being threatened by it in Naples. They are out getting gasoline, water and are preparing for it.

I am hopeful they will be OK if it passes over them. Their condo is built out of solid thick concrete and they have storm shutters they're putting up today.

Hi. My mom is going to orlando this week to spend her vacation. In case the hurricane hits florida, how in danger is she?

We do not know how powerful a hurricane is, so im asking this because im ignorant of the issue.

She shouldn't go. A cat 5 is disastrous.

Orlando is safer because it's up north I think. Key word is safer. Still gonna be lots of wind and water.

If this thing hits Miami dead on it's gonna hurt. Its a monster.

At the very least she won't have power starting on Sunday/Monday and the airport might be closed for an unknown amount of time after. I wouldn't worry so much about flooding in Orlando (with this fucking thing though who knows anymore), but the wind damage is going to be really bad. Either way, she will not have any sort of a nice or relaxing vacation here. She needs to change her plans immediately.

Her flight back might come under some issues due to air restrictions. She'll need to double check with Orlando's Airport for any delays/cancellations in the event Irma becomes an issue. Right now, Irma isn't forecast to hit Orlando which is roughly a couple hundred miles north of the expected area it's forecast to strike. Doesn't necessarily mean rain bands/wind won't cause issues either, they most certainly can hit Orlando.

Honestly the worst she'll see is either; 1. Cancelled or Delayed Flight or 2. A shit ton of traffic of people moving out of harms way.

When in doubt though, stay away. DO NOT RISK IT.

I feel so much better after changing plans. The stress of woorrying over it would quadrupled if I actually flew down there tomorrow.

To the other poster, tell your mom to reschedule. It's for the best.

Hoping it goes somewhere the fuck else..

This is my parents first hurricane in Florida. When we all lived together, we faced hurricanes and bad weather before... but they are going to be alone dealing with a potential Cat 5...

They are also 10 miles from the Gulf. I have no idea how flooding and wind would pan out for them.

Stubbornness.

Also, Florida houses are made out of sticks. They are made out of wood because the soil can't handle the weight of a proper concrete home (like in Puerto Rico), which means they are super vulnerable to hurricanes.

I don't think this is true. Building codes got beefed up considerably after Andrew in 1992.

She should probably change her plans. Right now it's pretty unpredictable. It doesn't seem likely Orlando will be in any direct danger, however it's unlikely she'll have an enjoyable vacation. At best she's stuck inside all week because of torrential rain. At worst she's stuck in Florida for some extra time because the storm swings northwards. I wouldn't bet my vacation on it.

Yup, I have lived in newly constructed building. When I take vacations in FL to my folks' place, the concrete used in the building, makes it hard keeping cell phone service it's soo thick.

Well they cancelled my work conference that was supposed to be in Orlando through Friday. Liability issue but at the same time they are going to expect us out in the streets selling product to our accounts so that doesn't make sense either. Oh well lol. Time to hunker down in brandon

Just got back from the store and it's a fucking mad house. There's a line coming out of Aldi in Cutler Bay that takes up at least 2 blocks going up US-1. So I went to Winn Dixie instead. They are all out of water, except for the expensive bottle stuff. I did manage to snag about 20 cans of Chef Boyardee and some tortilla chips and salsa. Also, if you need lighters and candles, hit up the Dollar Store. They won't have many canned goods but stuff like candles and lighters are there aplenty. Also they have plenty of bottles of Gatorade.

bout to start hitting these publix parking lots for scalped water, good times

south florida (a literal sea of blue, before we join the sea again someday) hops you enjoy your time off fam

we've been fortunate to not have had a really bad hurricane season out here since maybe '05, but we're long overdue - and conditions are rapidly getting worse for super storms as well
Stay safe bud :(
