You have to go to Display > Columns UI > FCL importing and exporting.

The file you're trying to import is an FCL file, rather than a FTH file, so you won't be able to import it using that option.

If you haven't installed/enabled Columns UI, see the OP where it has the link to it and how to enable it.

Glorious thread, amazing OP.

Thanks for this 1stStrike.

Thanks! With the past half ass Foobar 2000 threads I felt it deserved a real OT on here since it's (IMO) the best media player out there for PC music enthusiasts/audiophiles.

So is it superior to Winamp?

It completely depends on what you want out of a media player. If you just want something that plays music and don't care about anything else, then it doesn't matter, as audio quality with stock settings is pretty much the same between them.

But, in terms of customization, library management, DSP, and memory usage - Foobar wins hands down. Even using Columns UI with a skin it uses less memory than Winamp. It also allows you to bypass the Windows mixer with kernel streaming for a better audio signal which is very handy if you use a DAC/AMP.

Thanks for taking the time to do such a good in depth thread!

Unfortunately I'm stuck in the iTunes eco-system. Apple have so much bloody money, would it kill them to optimise the software some so it doesn't run like crap?

Yep. I updated the OP with the necessary module and a link to a guide for syncing your iPod library to/from Foobar 2000.

Also note that Foobar 2000 will automatically convert any music that isn't compatible with your iPod to the iPod format when you sync to it, so this way you can sync over any of your songs without any issues.
Thank you sir! I will remain skeptical as I've been foobar burned before, but I'll give it a shot

Foobar can import anything from your itunes library, so really the only thing you'd need to use it for is actually purchasing songs. I recommend at least giving it a shot. If you don't like it, just uninstall Foobar and press on.

Let us know how it goes - I don't own an iPod/use iTunes so I can't test it myself, but based on what I've ready many iPod/iPhone users swear by this module.

How do I filter the library on genre? One of the things I liked about iTunes is the ultra search box that would instantly filter all fields by what you typed in it. I haven't been able to find a genre sort thing yet.

Well I guess I don't know how you quickly filter on any field really.

I also don't like this album view. There's this big window but it's maybe showing 10 songs at a time on it because it splits it into albums and shows the cover beside it.

:lol

I appreciate tweaking. I'm a tweaker myself. But this... no thanks. Every time I give Foobar a try I'm back to iTunes in a few days. No drive to do all the setup when iTunes, which is a huge piece of shit that I hate, does an acceptable enough job.

In the theme I showed in the OP you'd click on the "Al" button, go down to "Filter" at the bottom and click on the "..." button. Select "GENRE is ..." and go from there.

The beauty of Foobar is that you can customize it any way you want - so if you don't like this theme as is, you can always modify it.

Also, you can use the sidebar on the left to display your entire collection and just navigate to whichever album you want to go to. It's sorted alphabetically by default.

You may wish to simply try a different theme too!

It takes like 10 minutes to actually setup, so while it looks like a lot it's really not that hard. It'll probably take you longer to read the entire OP then to actually set everything up.

Also, it's all completely optional. You can just install Foobar and play mp3's in it without doing any of the above. Everything I put in the OP is to just give you an idea of how to improve the look over the default GUI (if you want) and how to improve the audio quality over the stock settings.

I've been using Foobar2000 for years now, I like it. I don't need a lot of frills on my audio playing program, so I can customize it to be very barebones. I don't need one to be more than this.

I'm the opposite - love my eye candy :p

OH MY GOD!!!!

Foobar is the best. Hands down. I've been using it for years.

I only use a simple Columns UI theme. I don't like too much clutter. Just give me track information and play my music.

Was about to give up with foobar until I found this skin, was on deviant art I think. Only reason I migrated to foobar from Itunes is for FLAC otherwise I didn't really mind using Itunes at all.

When I first saw foobar a number of years ago, I thought it was the ugliest/most useless media player I had ever seen. Luckily, the default interface has gotten much better since then. And no matter how many times I feel like trying something with a slightly better aesthetic (even going as far as trying to customize foobar to disastrous results), I keep coming back to its simple/low-resource interface that lets me organize my music in the most efficient way.

That's a great looking theme. Pretty much all the themes are on DeviantArt - there's all kinds of good ones (and bad ones) on there for many different versions of Foobar (some 1.1+ and some pre-1.0).

It would take something pretty massive to get me to give up on Foobar at this point. I came from Winamp years before and haven't looked back since I found the awesomeness that is Foobar.

After using FooAvA for years I decided it was time to upgrade to the newest version of foobar and of course the skin isn't compatible. Haven't liked what I've seen so far in this thread or deviantart so I'm rocking the default skin until something else comes along.

I just use the default skin, used Foobar for quite some time now. Love that it lets me show my music by folder structure as i went through painstakingly one time to make sure everything was organised My Music>Artist>Albums in my folders.

My god I wish iTunes would do this...and folder monitoring. FFS why can't iTunes monitor my folders to see if anything changed, too?

The default really doesn't look that bad in the latest version. It's definitely improved over what it was years ago!

Folder monitoring is a must in any respectable mp3 player. Foobar does it quite well - plus you can even filter out the types of files you don't want added.

I'm a big fan of Foobar. Originally chose it because of the low memory cost but once I started digging deeper I fell in love with he amount of customizing that's possible. It's a tweaker's dream. It saved me from the hell iTunes had me trapped in and for that I am forever grateful.

I finally got around to getting all my plugins setup yesterday and my god it sounds glorious. I don't know if it was the placebo effect or what, but I wanted to go play Xenoblade Chronicles and I just kept saying "maybe I'll listen to one more song" and then 2 more hours had passed.

Yeah, that happens to me too. If you add the right DSP plugins and configure them correctly it makes a world of difference. As I said earlier in the thread, there's just some DSP plugins that I simply cannot do without anymore :)

Anyone know where to find a good lyrics plugin/how to set it up correctly? I've tried a few and they either don't work or are terrible.

What have you tried so far? MiniLyrics is supposed to be one of the best.

Edit:

I gave it a whirl and it works fine. It runs as a separate app, and downloads the lyrics to C:\lyrics by default. If you go into the options you have the the ability to have it save the lyrics right into the mp3 file automatically - otherwise, you can just go to C:\lyrics and associate the lyrics that MiniLyrics downloads (automatically when each song begins) with the mp3 in foobar and you're set.

Pretty much, still use the regular theme. I also install it on people's PCs that I'm working on.

Just tried to install OP's skin. Not the biggest fan because the play button disappeared and I don't want album art to occupy such a central place.

I like how quickly foobar starts up, and also that it plays FLACs, but is there someway to get a browse by artist window? (Similar to what used to be iTunes browse function?)

Can't believe how user-unfriendly this software is.

What version of Foobar are you using? The play button is clearly visible on my foobar.

Also, to browse by artist, in the skin in the OP just click on Al, expand Library and then click on "Artist". It'll display all of your songs sorted by artist.

I stopped using foobar a couple of years ago after getting frustrated at it never doing quite what I wanted it to do. Been using mediamonkey since. But I think it might be time to go back.

Does it support DLNA?

Sure does.

Why is that exactly?

And I'm guessing its not possible to sync my ipod up with foobar?

Read the OP. There's an entire section in there that contains info about how to use your ipod with foobar.

Foobar simply allows you to get the best quality out of your music, as well as has the greatest customization. The plugins alone make it worth having, as you can take a somewhat shitty pair of headphones and make music sound good on them.

Really? I thought it was just for playing FLAC files. I didn't see the point of it before because I would simply convert them to apple lossless.

Play button is still missing in columns_UI. Very odd, I even updated to latest foobar.

I don't want to sort a huge lists dumped in one big-ass window. I want a view where I get a list of my artists and can expand and collapse their songs etc.

Can you take a screenshot of what it looks like?

Also, Foobar is extremely customizable so you can pretty much do anything you want with it. Might require some work, but there's some interesting custom setups out there.

@1stStrike
I followed your instructions but I still have white edges like in your second screenshot in OP (the one showing how it should look like) but how do I get it to look like you have it in the first screenshot? :)

Go to your options > Columns UI > Status bar. Uncheck the "Show status bar" box and click "OK".

Voila.
