For how long should the current-gen last?

I mean PS5, Series, and Switch 2.
Personally for me it's a tough thought to think, because of this the Last Days (as in the Bible). I think it should just simply continue longer than the previous gens, do gamers actually want something more tech-wise. With all these upscaling methods, and frame-generators. Most of us are far-in-life, I personally am 35 now. Do you actually want more graphical push, are you not playing for gameplay. Also there's an option to max-out graphics on PC if need that.
What about you?

Developers don't optimize for the current gen. PS5 only has a few PS5-only games and Xbox just started to release XSX/S-only games....and it's been 5 years. If they all harnessed the full power of the systems and optimized the games, this generation could, and should last 5 more years.

The PS5 is just getting off the ground in terms of graphics. It would be a waste of a console if they don't unleash its full potential.

Until 2028 or 2029

For PS5 and Xbox, it really needs to be as long as possible, tech advancements and especially the cost/perf is going to result in a crappy upgrade if they're replaced soon. Next gen really needs to have much better RT performance and AMD isn't quite there yet. PS5 Pro is a big deal more expensive than the base ps5 and it doesn't really offer much of an upgrade. The base consoles haven't even dropped in price since launch showing just how bad the cost aspect is for gaming hardware is currently. The switch 2 will do its own thing as always and will last a long while. Personally I think it needs to be 2028 at the minimum imo, but 29 even 30 would make sense.

These guys get it. I was going to post almost exactly the same points. This generation hasn't even really started because game development is at a fucking snail's pace due to the pandemic delays and the GAAS obsession.

No one knows when the last days are. Mayan fucking calendars. Millenial bug. Ww3. Aliens. Nukes. Meteors. Suicide cults. AI. Twin Towers. Covid.

There could well be another 10,000 years on the clock for all we know.

With how current gen isn't even capable of handling UE5, late 2026 is where i'd like to see next gen coming out. Obviously not gonna happen, but six years of worthless tech made to run last gen ports in 60fps is way more than enough.

If things follow the typical cycle and we get new consoles in 2027 then we might be looking at triple-gen titles being released for the first few years.

13 years from the release of GTA 6.
Thats 2039 to announce the new gen console.
2040 release date.

15 more years. That gives everyone 180 months to save up money for what will be an expensive console.

i vote we keep the ps5 around long enough to get at least one naughty dog release (i'd say at least one bluepoint release, but I'm thinking that'd be asking a bit too much)...

I wouldn't really mind current gen being fully supported for another 10 years while we still get new hardware iterations that simply run games better.
Regardless if Ps6 launches in 2027 or later on, I think we'll get a long cross gen period anyway.

Hardware advancements were already slowing down before this current gen of consoles came out, and upscaling + frame-generation have been there to pad that lack of advancement.

I think people are sniffing copium if they think there is some magic optimization yet to be gained from this console hardware. PC ports of Sony first-party non-cross-gen games ran fine despite not having their mystical custom I/O, because consoles aren't really that super custom anymore when it comes to hardware with unique advantages.

The only optimism I have for the next consoles is if they invest in some custom NPUs that kick-ass at crunching AI to heavily compress shader code, textures, lighting and other game data. That way even if the other generic hardware specs don't improve much, AI will just reduce the workload of rendering the same tasks, and the consoles can punch higher.

I don't know if gens matter anymore outside of keeping up to date with newer technologies. The current gen consoles can handle outstanding content, so it's not like we're desperately waiting for more power. I get excited about new consoles regardless of the age of a console. I can't wait for the next xbox console as it will likely coincide with a new Halo game. If rumors are true and something comes out next year I'd be thrilled. I look forward to the next Switch but I can't really afford it at the moment, so i'll probably be searching FB Marketplace in a year or two for a good deal instead.

2028/2029

Devs can't even optimize the games for these current systems. A lot of big developers are still in 4-5 years development cycles and some dont even have announced projects yet, it would be so pointless to release a new console so soon.

Switch 2 isn't current gen. It's the first next gen console.

I expect next gen Xbox/PlayStation in 2027 at the earliest and 2028 at the latest.

Here I was thinking the Switch 2 was just a Switch Pro with a few exclusives. Let's be real, it's next-gen for Nintendo IPs. Sony and Microsoft is a whole generation ahead and the PC is three generations ahead.

I think Sony still has a few PS4 games they haven't remastered yet. There's still life in this generation yet.

And yet they still refuse to remaster the Gravity Rush series and Bloodborne. They're running out of options.

I just bought a PS5 Pro, so I hope this gen lasts for at least another 3 or 4 years.

I don't really consider Switch 2 when thinking about generations. Nintendo are on their own timetable.

I would be fine with up to 2030 tbh. Feels like it took until 2025 for current gen to even really get started. I could have coasted on PS4 until 2024 and not miss anything that great.

Generations aren't determined by power. It's the next generation Nintendo console. Semantics don't change that.

In many ways it barely feels like the gen started. Exclusives have been lackluster and it wasn't until mid 2023 we finally started phasing out cross-gen game releases.

Long. It still feels like it barely started. Possibilities are endless but barely anyone is tapping in.
We have good ssd drives. That's all we needed. Graphics were already great on ps3 and ps4 honestly.... So we are covered on all fronts
