WasabiKing, Mike Works, myself, and others have been wanting to get a GAF texas holdem tourney going, but the problem is finding the right software for it. Apparently poker game devs are assholes.. nothing I've tried gives all of the following:

- Free to get
- Free to play/Uses fake money
- Accomodates private tables with limit control
- Java preferred, but not strictly required
- Doesn't invisibly segment traffic
- Doesn't have neutered gameplay

If such a thing does exist, I've personally given up looking for it. I was hoping somebody here already knew.

As for why this isn't in the gaming or online forum...
mod abuse

I have no help, but I'd like to get in on it if you find something that fits.

I've been playing the ESPN poker game recently, and it's been bugging the hell out of me. It has single table tournaments, and invariably half the table goes all-in on the first hand to either get a huge advantage or to go to a new table and do the same thing. It just annoys me when people play like it's free.

Of course, coming back from a 9-1 deficit in chips and beating them heads-up by actually playing poker is always fun.

Wouldn't Yahoo work?
Yahoo fails the "Doesn't have neutered gameplay" requirement, and has no limit control. They pretty much took out the whole betting game. Try it sometime, it fucking sucks.

I guess you miss the gaf member that keeps going "Hey I got a free Texas Hold'um plugin for mirc, you guys never want to use it"! I mean it has graphics and everything, but everytime he creates a thread to run it... no one freaking responds.

No, just get an older version.

Mister Zimbu has the plugin software, so private message him if you need it.

I set up the tourney bot in IRC again.

Server: irc.xelium.net
Channel: #tourney

If you're using mIRC, you can get a script to give a nice GUI to this game. It's not too pretty, but makes it a lot easier to follow the action and keep track of the cards. It should be relatively bug-free, but I've forgotten most of the details- havent touched the script since August.

If not, you're still welcome to play.

---
Important: If you have to leave during the game, quit it first! There is NO METHOD the bot has to handle players who quit without having them quit manually. If you have to take a break, type "p vacation".

Basic instructions regarding the IRC ends:
To join the game, type /msg TBot p join [a password]. The password is anything you choose.
To quit the game, type /msg TBot p quit.
To start a game, type p start. Don't do this until you are sure everyone's ready; this will start the game and no additional people will join.

Commands if you're not using the GUI:
p check
p call
p raise # (raise by # chips)
p fold
p splash (goes all-in)
p cards (displays your hole cards)
p board (displays your board cards)

---
Instructions:
These are copy-pasted from the old post, but they should still apply. This is how to set up the mIRC plugin. Very useful, though not required to play.

1) Download mIRC if you haven't already done so, from http://www.mirc.com

2) Once downloaded, set up your IRC nick, and exit out of the connect dialog.

3) Download my IRCPoker script. It resides at http://www.rit.edu/~jaw3289/ircpoker.zip

4) Unzip the full contents of the archive (ie, extract that outer folder too) to your mirc directory. Your mirc directory should now contain an IRCpoker folder and its contents.

5) Back to mIRC load it up, and exit out of the connect dialog. Load the script by typing:
/load -rs ircpoker\ircpoker.mrc

You should see a welcome message appear confirming that the script has loaded. You only need to load the script once.

5) Join the Xelium server (irc.xelium.net). Do this by typing /server irc.xelium.net

6) Join the poker tournament channel, #tourney. Await further instructions there. You can fire up the IRC poker script itself by right clicking in the channel and selecting Start IRCpoker.
:lol Texas Hold Em IRC. :lol

Hitokage: Such a thing does not exist, free of charge. There are many pay poker sites that will accomodate private tournaments, however.

I believe Zimbu's mIRC poker script is the only option.

It's free, there is play money, and you can create private tables.

how do you create these tables? any time you pick "create private table" it says "private tables not available at this time. please try again later."

IRC Poker isn't bad at all. A few of us GAers ran a game or two a while back. I think we should give it a try.

As for poker clients... I don't think any are going to work. The few that let your creat private tables (i.e. PokerStars), also segment traffic onto various servers. It's about impossible getting everyone in one room.

For money games I play on Ultimatebet.

Ah, didn't know they charged for private tables. Sorry.

sorta off topic, but partypoker.com gave me $20 for free just to join. i've never played poker much in my life, always thought gambling is stupid, but what the hell, its not my money anyway. so after 3 days, playing at the $.50/$1 tables, I'm up to $264. what the hell? do internet poker players suck this bad? i'm by no means an expert at this game. maybe its beginners luck.

Yes they do suck that bad, (partypoker is one of those places), and I'm sure it is some beginners luck in there, but you had to at least have some basic skills down to take $20 to $264. Actually, that is quite impressive for a 3 day outing at a .5/1 table.

Yes, internet players do suck this badly.

However, variance will come into play sooner or later. Because these players are so terrible, you're going to have to also expect some horrible suck-outs. Prepare to lose some of your $264 in the following weeks.

If you are smart about it and know what tables to hit (hand/hour and money/hand) you should be able to keep your bankroll up. The problem becomes, however, that the better you get... the more you'll want to play higher stakes. If you have the discipline, however. kudos... you should do fine.

And yes... internet players are terrible. But just as bad as they are in real life as well.

As far as getting a GAF tourney... why not just play for money? Everyone puts in X amount to cover the cost of the private table and then a little more for a nice little payday to the top 3 (make it a STT.. a few winners will make it easier to swallow for everyone... and fun can still be had). I'm not sure about prices... because my server has blocked the ports needed to play some of the more popular sites (Fulltilt and UB are still working... yay).

I dunno... a couple of bucks shouldn't hurt. We can stop hitting the bargain bins for a week, right? :)

AAAARRRGGHHHH!!

One hand tonight I have K8, flop is 10,8,7,8,10. I go all in after final card. The other guy has J10. Goodbye $45.

FUCK.

FUCK.

I was just playing in an ESPN tournament, top 25 (of 1500) advance to a tournament that has a prize of a world series of poker main event seat.
42 people left, blinds 1/2 thousand. I've got 8 thousand, and am dealt A-K. Raise before the flop, one call. Flop comes KK9, I raise again. He calls. Next card was rather irrelevant. Raise again, he calls again. Final card is a two, I go all in with what at this point is less than the small blind. He calls. HE FUCKING HAD POCKET TWOS.

God dammit. Why the hell do you keep calling if you can get beat by somebody who has ANY card on the board?

FUCK.

Finished forty-first.

Doh the board, oops. That's what sucks, if you think everyone is' going to play "smart" you'll eventually get burned by some nutjob hanging on for the river.

I can deal with them, they play the same way.

If this guy wanted to hang around until the river with nothing whatsoever, he could have easily put me all in(He had about 17000 before the hand started, well over two times my chip count).

But instead he kept calling with what amounts to nothing. And on a fucking two outer, he catches what he needed. Any other card in the deck gives the hand to me. Any of them. And he gets one of those two fucking dueces left. Shit, it was a full table, that may very well have been the LAST two in the deck.

On the bright side, I get a "prize", which will likely be a stick of deoderant or something since the game is sponsored by Degree and it was free to play.

FUCK!

Oh well. Next Sunday, I tackle this bitch. Just for an update-the guy who beat me finished 21st, so he's in the tournament for the spot in WSOP.

You just need to know when to quit. I start out every night with $25 bucks on .50-1.00 all-in tables. Once I get that up to $100 I leave the table, and then start over fresh with $25 on a new table. Rinse and repeat until I'm unlucky enough to lose my starting $25. Then I log off, and come back the next day. It's pointless staying in games when you have a lot of money potentially on the line. Especially when there are upwards of 10 people at the table. Someone is eventually going to fuck you on an all-in no matter how good of a hand you're holding with that many cards in players hands.

Also need to learn bankroll management. You were a beginner, so playing .5/1 was probably too high a limit, even though you had $264. You were playing .5/1 limit right(not no limit)? Yeah, to gain so much and lose so much, definitely playing too many hands, and probably taking them too far. Just seeing a guy right now at the table I am at. Playing all sorts of crap, and winning all the time. He's up quite a bit, if he stays, he will lose it most of it, because he plays every hand, and he plays them too far.

Yep, that guy is already losing, flopped set of queens, He kept betting at me, I kept raising. Won a nice pot. 2 hands later, he played A8 to a raise, A flopped, lost to the AJ raiser.

I love playing people who play crap hands, and always try to steal the blinds, because when you get a real great hand, you can win, and win big.
