I thinK Johntv and a couple of the Japanese gaffers have played both. I read John's blog a bit back and he said this.
Then again, I felt the same way about both Lumines and Meteos when I first played them, and now I love them both

Title: Meteos
Platform: Nintendo DS (JP)
Publisher: Bandai

Where: Dreamland
When: March 8
How Much: 4,541 yen (4,800 yen w/tax)

I was as jazzed as the next guy for this game, especially after seeing it get two 10s in Famitsu (yes, I know Famitsu's reviews are about as trustworthy as a used-car salesman, but still), but the final game left me feeling pretty disappointed. The interface, the visuals, the audio...everything about the game is extremely polished, as one would expect from a guy like Masahiro Sakurai (creator of Kirby and designer of the Smash Bros. games), but one critical flaw ruins everything: when the action starts to get too intense, you merely need to scratch the screen furiously (you don't even need to look where you're scratching) to pretty much clear out the entire playfield and proceed as if nothing happened. With virtually no risk of losing, even on the harder difficulty levels, I just can't motivate myself to play the game, even if I try not to use this "feature" (yes, they're trying to justify it as a feature, if you can believe that).

Still, many people (my girlfriend included) seem to love it, so I'm not saying it's not for everyone. Without that one flaw it does seem like an extremely well-made puzzler, and it's packed with cool stuff to unlock. With any luck, maybe they'll fix this problem for the US version and I can take another stab at it.

I know Chespace thinks Meteos = POS and plays it on the crapper. I also thought I read somewhere that there is a bug/cheat where you slide the stylus all over the touch screen to win (ah its in the bit I quoted...)

Now that I have a PSP and played the rather brilliant Lumines, I'd like to know how gamers who've played both thought they stacked.

I guess that's it. I don't have a DS yet but if there's any game that will seal the deal.. its this (and Electroplankton).

Meteos is more pick up and play than Lumines. Lumines gives you more time to develop that puzzle "groove." Both have awful music.
I like 'em both.

I'll never understand why people complain about this when it really isn't an issue. Out of curiosity, the other day I did 2 single games of Meteos, both on the same mode with the same level but with 2 differences. The first I simply waved the stylus over the screen at random, the second time I played it properly. Here are the results:

Waving the stylus randomly
Time Lasted: 3'03
Score: 245

Playing it properly
Time Lasted: 3'09
Score: 334

While the time of the games are similar, the scores are far worse when you're simply moving the stylus at random and I believe that any argument that it ruins the game in any way is a poor one. Yes, it may buy you a few more seconds if you're lucky, but it not something that ruins the game, certainly not like say the spinning block problem of Tetris Worlds on the GBA.

apples and oranges. this thread is typical gaf.

to contribute something i'll say that... both are flawed. but meteos' flaws are way more irritating and on a whole different level.

edit: oh, the "bug" statement is ridiculous. really. play it.

well, you're not adding much. I think when Johntv gets on, I'd like to know how his impressions changed with extended play.

My quote isn't in sequence but this is where he left off

Lumines is a trance enducing journey through a crazy dj set. Eventually , you learn that certain levels are "chill out" sections where you get a good 5 minutes of clearing blocks, to be followed by a slow ramp up to frantic survival. As a result , the game in it's full form takes a good couple of hours of your time per go once you get decent at it.

Meteos on the other hand is designed more around panicing you out from the get go and making you stressed by throwing more stuff at you in a shorter period of time. Games in Meteos are measured in minutes and seconds rather than hours. Of course, people mention "oh when you panic, you can just wipe the screen randomly" - i've tried this, but i can't get it to work that well! :)

Which one is better? Both are great in different ways.

Solution : Buy both - no cash? Sell naked pictures on the internet or ....

:lol serious? I think Lumines has great tracks The mondo Grosso stuff is sweet. Only problem is starting back at 0 if you suck.

Thanks. :)

I just mute the damn PSP when playing Lumines. I loathe the soundtrack.

I've played both a lot and Lumines is, by far, my favorite.

I guess Meteos wouldn't deserve so much attention if Lumines hadn't been around. I'd rather use the DS to play the brilliant Dr. Mario than Meteos actually.

i'll say that... both are flawed.

Lumines is flawed? Why?

They are two very different games. Meteos is a pick up and play, fast moving action packed type puzzle game...And Lumines is one of those that you slowly master. Both are really great games, even for people who haven't enjoyed puzzle games in the past.

I know, but it's very late here. To sum it up: the main concept of the game, the real meteos, can only be found in the four minigames (which incidentally are single player) (or possibly the multiplayer mode, which I haven't tried yet). The rest is a cluttered mess (in terms of gameplay, mostly) in the form of a collectathon with fancy music and a cute but confusing design. Which is not bad, really. But it isn't very good either. It would take a looong review to properly make my point.

Play it to 999.999 and you'll see [edit: hohoho, this sounds terrible!]. Or rather, go all the way to the end and then start from scratch. It dies, eventually. But it's flawed for good, and I love it. I've loved it. Way too much.

Lumines >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Meteos.

Lumines is a system seller.

Meteos is a game you buy because you own the system and have no games to play.

Lumines is a system seller alright, it sold the PSP to me and while I love that game to bits, Meteos still comes off as the better game. Why? Well, Meteos just have more meat on the bones than Lumines. And as earlier in the thread, Lumines is a bit flawed. I havn't reached 999,999 just yet, but I'm getting there while I'm nowhere near mastering Meteos yet even though I've spent many more hours on that game. So all in all it's more bang for the buck.

Both are incredible games, and they're both very different while having much in common. Personally I wouldn't wanna miss out on any of these two gems, but if I had to chose one, it'd be Meteos.

I agree on Lumines being a system seller. I don't have my own PSP, but I have access to one with Lumines, and it makes me want to get my own, most of the other games don't appeal that much to me. I haven't had a chance to play Meteos, so I can't say anything about it.

The scratching thing in Meteos is definitely lame but it's not as much of a problem as it seemed to be at first. I wound up getting REALLY into Meteos after playing it for a couple of weeks, and I don't really use the scratch anymore except for, say, the waning moments of a Time Attack game when there's really nothing else you can do anyway. Overall it's a great puzzler and very addictive.

But yes, Lumines, while not as polished or complete (feature-wise), is a much, much, much better puzzler IMO. That game puts you into a state of zen like no other puzzler since Tetris or Panel de Pon, IMO, and maybe even moreso because of the music. Definitely the best PSP game so far IMO, and one that nobody should miss.

uhhhhhh...
anyway, i havent played meteos actually. but lumines is really good...and i hate puzzle games!
tough for me though, im just not very good at puzzle games.

would Lumines work on home consoles as well?, or is having it up close in your hands part of the experience (like how Tetris was always better on portables than consoles)...

if they ever release Lumines for a home console I'd definitely want to try it out...

I like Lumines, of course. Haven't played it in about 2 years, but I still like it.

Meteos really grew on me the last couple months. Enough where I'm not just playing it on the crapper. It's like a really good twist on the Panel de Pon formula... and I welcome its short game sessions these days.

if i had the choice, i'd rather have lumines on consoles. why? my eyes feel like they're gonna bleed after staring at a handheld for 2 hours. thankfully there's a sleep mode on the PSP. i had to use it to accomplish the 999,999 run

also, lumines really needs a shuffle mode. it doesn't even have to record the score. i just want a mode where the skins are in random order

I enjoy both and I think they both have quite a lot of longevity.
The main problem with Lumines is the lack of options, but I will keep playing it because I enjoy the music so much. Changing the order of skins would be nice, but it really needs an improved quick game function. Single player versus suffers from having to play through the same skins in the same order each time also. Basically, I play Lumines like an interactive album. I just wish there was a "single mode" :)

Meteos is fast and furious - the total opposite of Lumines. The music's not as full as Lumines, obviously, but it's still quite good, and is event-driven like Lumines. I would love to try out the multiplayer aspects of Meteos as they seem like a pretty strong feature. John TV and DCharlie, what say we get together for some Meteos some time? Know a 4th player that might want to join us?

in my honest opinion, i think lumines with no music would suck, and meteos with lumines' music would rock. but alas, some gaffers like lumines with the sound down, i just dont

you do realise in Japan, Meteos has sold more copies than Lumines? I know its great but it doesn't exactly sell itself. LIke I mentioned in the other thread, unless you've played it awhile, you won't see the significance/importance of the skins.. its not that transparent

I :heart this comment

I'm going to guess that when Meteos gets a US release, I'll own a DS. I do think LUmines for all its bells and whistles, is only really ever good in 1st P mode and 2player/vs mode. Single skin mode is sort of pointless in a tetris fashion but the others, they're really really fun.

No one's said it but I think Lumines' puzzle mode is broken or badly designed. That or I don't get it. There's NO explaination on how to play this. I

They are two different kinds of puzzlers you stupid bunch of wankers. STOP COMPARING THEM. BUY BOTH!

And Odnentin, it looks as if you are just looking for a "meteos>lumines" result.

why? I have a PSP and no DS. Maybe I shouldn't have put VS but its what I typed.

I apologise then, I just simply hate how people write off puzzlers as if the are the same game these days.

Damn, talk about awful taste...

Oh yeah. Shake Your Body is definitely good times.
My musical tastes are just completely out of sync with Lumines's tracks. Still, its not like the music is in any way important to the game. I jumped from 100k to 300k the first time I played without the music on.
I can get over it though.
