From Jim O'Shea, ousted LA Times editor...
Mr. O'Shea said:
One thing I want put on the record, though, is that I disagree completely with the way that this company allocates resources to its newsrooms, not just here but at Tribune newspapers all around the country. That system is at the core of my disagreements with David. I think the current system relies too heavily on voodoo economics and not enough on the creativity and resourcefulness of journalists...

This company, indeed, this industry, must invest more in solid, relevant journalism. We must integrate the speed and agility of the Internet with the news judgment and editorial values of the newsroom, values that are more important than ever as the hunger for news continues to surge and gossip pollutes the information atmosphere.

...

We need to tell readers more about Barack Obama and less about Britney Spears…

Fair enough, you're stating the way things are right now... but is it right? Should it be this way?

It's a ridiculous state of affairs we find ourselves to be in I think.

or people want what they are shown. There have always been articles/magazines with celebrities in, but its never been quite as insane as recent years.

Its just lazy journalism. Why dig out an interesting story from the political arena, when celebrities falling over is so easy to report?

Its like reality TV - its easy so they show it.

If they had intelligent, well written articles about Obama or other items, people would read it. You can still make stuff like that entertaining. Look at Charlie Wilsons War. Entertaining movie but about a serious subject and it even makes an attempt at putting a message across. Everyone's a winner.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the NBC Nightly News guy report sometime ago that a major press breifing on the Iraq war was interrupted on CNN, Fox News and MNSBC to break the non-story of Anna Nicole Smith's death?

They just need to learn how to do more with less.
