Former Teachers of GAF, why did you leave Teaching?

Nope, those were the good ones with a balanced view. But I guess you didn't watch their content and someone told you they were shit. I learned so much from their channels. It was the other 90% what were like you say but most of them have left the country now. There's only Youtube shills left here praising the CCP now while getting paid for it by the CCP.

But I've encountered many many of those forigners that want to live/work in another coutry and still expect to bring their lifestyle with them. "Where's the gym, where's the best gym, I wanna find the local gym, is there one near me?" and "I want to have the same haircut, exactly as I like in China, where can I get that?" so on and so forth. Their only leisure activity is going out and getting drunk multiple times a week.
Those two YouTubers I simply hate. I have watched their content and they come across as those white guys that stopped being worshiped by the Chinese community, threw a tantrum, and now dedicate their lives shitting on the country where they were living for so long. I've met some before and those two fit that criteria perfectly. I'm not a shill for anyone, and after being here for more than 2 years, I still maintain a neutral view of it. The country is theirs, not mine, and I have no say in a lot of the things they do here. Some I find wrong, others I actually think they are pretty nice, but I will never travel to a country, live there, get married, and after a few years create a channel on Youtube to shit on exactly that country. Those two YouTubers create content riding the Sinophobia wave so, in my opinion, they're low level trash.

The lifestyle was one that I've felt (not the drinking part), but quickly got used to it. Actually there's a barber here that cuts my hair exactly like I want it, so I just go there. Gyms are everywhere, so I don't know what there is to complain about that. And yeah, the foreigners I know basically spend their week drinking and having fun, because that's exactly what they came here to do.

Classic LBH! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I see those same guys in China and some of them have this vibe that they actually planned to go to Japan but didn't make the required standards.

Then there's another other type that people back wherever they came from would quite rightly not put up with their bullshit. Surprisingly or not a lot of these type became Youtube shills for China.

He's such a tool lol ... You can sometimes tell people who traveled from a young age vs people who did it after uni etc, by that time they've built their world views and political ideals and there's a huge chance they'll draw comfort from feeling superior, shitting on everything...

I ignored things like spitting, babies having no crotch in their pants, etc, i just found Chinese people to be very willing to communicate with my usually crap mandarin and answer my questions.. Japanese people are actually a lot like yanks lol, if you don't understand they just get louder and think you're three quarters stupid lol..

The thing this particular brand of late expat fails to do is accept that the country isn't there for them... Jakarta was worse, expats dump all over that city from a great height lol, penthouse height in fact, but i found so much to love in their half-abandoned museums and partially collapsed Colonial buildings.

Alright haha got enough of these views out i think

I was lucky that during my 3 years in Japan, out of the 40 language teachers in our city, I quickly bonded with a group of 4 others who were simply there to do a good job and experience the country around work.

It was nice to have humble friends and travel with them. We were all 25+ and not just straight out of Uni/College and so probably helped a lot.

A lot of the drama and weird fetishism for the country tended to centre around the drinking / party crew and it was quickly easy to see that the best course of action was to avoid that noise.

If you're going to teach abroad, you will encounter strange people who think they're hot shit because they're abroad. Be a bit tactful and careful about who you befriend, but of course do make good friends as it helps A LOT.

For me -- I would have never chosen to have started working as a teacher after going abroad. My question is, did you start off in SouthEast Asian countries teaching as a first job or was there something else?

ESL was my first "official" job as I lived in this fantasy my first two years in Mexico thinking, "But they'll buy my music, go to my performances, and buy my artwork because I'm American." Many Americans come to Mexico with that same thought in their heads that...they're something special and you'll get honors simply because of your nationality. No one bought my music (except for an Uncle from my wife who did so out of sympathy) and the artwork never sold (I have it somewhere in storage). These were things I always kept as hobbies and never studied in school as I did with business, I.T., and media arts.

One of my Uncle's who has been teaching grad students in literature for nearly 40-years, got his start in Japan. He moved to Tochigi sometime around 1980 after graduating from Berkley with a somewhat useless degree in Astronomy. He immediately started teaching ESL to Japan students. His advantage was that he learned how to speak the language first and was able to interpret many things (I practice which I used to discourage while teaching unless it was something individual that needed interpretation). He was there for 4-years before moving to France and then back to the U.S. in 1991.

Teachers today are too soft on students giving medals for everything you have to challenge students designing tests, you can’t be reliant on school administrators.

Teaching ESL can be a nice life but avoiding the pitfalls means some caveats. Learn the local language, put down roots, make local friends, gain more qualifications and aspire for better positions.

I've done a couple of years in Korea and it's been great, also a very chilled job with tons of downtime, but I'm already ready to leave this job and get a better position along with a residency visa.

The only foreigners I have as friends are actually people I've met at the University and some events.

Actually I see lots of foreigners just hanging out with each other, like in groups. I got the opportunity to come here so I just try to engage with locals as much as I can, that's the way of learning the place you are in. Most foreigners expect the country to bend to their values and behaviours, I've seen tons of them always complaining about this or about that, like it's their fucking country. And there's a bunch of shitty YouTubers which were exactly like that while staying here (laowhy and serptenza or whatever the fuck his name is). I'm actually surprised the amount of foreigners that don't wear any kind of masks here, despite being mandatory, it's like they think they know better. You see a see of Chinese people with masks and then this fucking foreigner in the middle just completely ignoring safety.

All I say is, as a foreigner, this is not my country. Life here is completely different when compared to the West and that's totally fine. I'm not going to act like I know better than them, just learn from what I experience here. I'm not better than those foreigners, but I simply don't want to be part of a group that shit talks everything about their host country. I won't learn anything from them, so better not to engage.
Eh, a bit rich to go after Laowai and Serpentza. They did a couple of of long trips across various parts of China and made a couple of documentaries about them.

They're quite good, but you do need to pay for them, which I suspect you wouldn't want to...

Anyway, at least they aren't CCP YouTube shills (some of whom are so bad that I honestly think they should have their original citizenships stripped from them).

I know several who’ve left because they didn’t agree with the vaccine mandate.

When I leave teaching I imagine it will go something like this..

A bit rich going after two failed teachers that CLEARLY are on a crusade against a country that didn't treat them as the kings they thought they were? Guys that use the hate train to fuel their videos with clickbait titles? Man, these two dudes failed at living in China, they were hoping they would be treated as kings, but they got fucked.

They are fucking trash. Good for you if you like them, nothing against that. But there's nothing in this world that will ever make me watch another one of their videos.

Why did they leave China when they lived here for so long?
Well, for these type of people, it's clear as day. The country developed, that "fun" life they were after wasn't there anymore. Wasn't the next country they moved to Vietnam? So yeah. They got their visas revoked for being whinny little fuckers. They think just because they lived there a long time it makes them experts on the matter.

But this is not exactly the thread for this. If you guys like watching their videos, it's fine for me. Imo, their videos are trash and they're simply trash people.

All I want to know is why you guys did this shit so often

Why is he a joke?
There are way too many red flags from this guy (and Serpentza). They act like they know everything about China, but they constantly bullshit and feed the "horrors of Communism" that the west loves.

Basically they're low level people that wanted some of the Asian "fun" life that lots of foreigners come here for (what we call sexpats). The country started developing, people started having standards, and these two dipshits started crying about being oppressed. Their videos are always some type of clickbait shit, "THESE WORDS ARE BANNED IN CHINA" or "THE CCP IS AFTER ME", while in fact it's all bullshit created by them. On that video, if it is the one I'm thinking about, he cries about being followed basically (notice the word Escaped). The thing is, this fuckwit left China through a Entry and Exit checkpoint like any other person would do, he was living at home the whole time (while crying that the CCP can know where everyone is everytime thanks to their super duper surveillance technology), and the word escaped means he won't come back to China any time soon. Well, surprise surprise, he did. Nothing happened to him, he wasn't followed, people in China simply got fed up with this bullshit of him and his buddy constantly talking shit about the country. He didn't like it, cried about it, and now he's a full blown China hater on steroids.

And some other stuff he lied about and most recently, people discovered he desecrated a place where he found some bodies, in Taiwan. If you research a bit, you can find why these two dipshits should be ignored. But you do you, that's my take on it.

You either hate watch them, or reading what someone else with an agenda pushes about them. The bones on a beach (From an 8 year old video) only got a tiny bit of attention just 2 days ago, so you seem to follow what news is going on with them. Except the facts you are presenting are very wrong.

So who do you follow on Youtube about life in China and the like?

I don't follow as I live here and have many friends who tell me all about their stories, without hate, without clickbait and without bullshit. I saw the news on Reddit on some random subreddit I might follow.

And of course the facts I'm presenting are very wrong, they know way more than I do. They've been here for so long, and can you believe it? They married Chinese woman, they truly master Chinese culture and know all the politics that go inside this country. Those two sexpa... I mean, experts, know everything. They would never lie or cheat for their own gain. /s

It's fucking Youtube, they'll use whatever its on the menu currently to drive those views up - right now is China. But nush, I can see you like them, I'm not going to fight that. I've had my experiences here, I know people, my gf who has given me great knowledge about Xinjiang as she is from there, so I will judge things based on what I and my friends around me experience, not because of what two failed fuckwits claim. If they ever went to Portugal and started talking shit about my country for YouTube views, I would also want them gone.

I don't understand why you're so angry. Personally I follow Sepenza and while most of the shit is boring it's nice to listen to as he obviously cares and is very open to being judged and well, kinda been following him for quite some time. C-Milk, I think he spends more time on his hair than producing content. He just agrees, and says "yeah ... yeah".

It's a unique view to a place many won't get to see. More power to them.

Didn't mean to sound angry, I just think they deceive and trash talk about a country they clearly don't like. They're taken as the know-it all from China, but in fact they only spew bullshit because it gives them clicks. Before coming to China I checked their videos, but now? They're bad and deceitful made to fuel the hate bandwagon. But whatever gives them the clicks, they clearly have their audience.

They're so bad they integrated with marriage and teaching and exploring and posting remote areas.

Dudes are legends. Fascinating to watch.

Not said I liked them, but they are interesting as it's a view i'll never have in my lifetime. If anything they're a bit annoying. I doubt they care that opinion.

If you have the opportunity in the future, come to China and go through all the provinces. It's an amazing place full of wonderful people and cultures. I still have a few places I want to go myself, but from my experience, this country is nothing like I've saw being reported by these "youtubers".

From my experience the China of today isn't the same as the one 10-15 years ago. I've seen some shit. Now it's at least in the south and tier one cities pretty regular now with, Starbucks, movie theaters, smartphones and a stable internet infrastructure and no random wild events happening on the streets.

Seeing a Chinese electric car blow up on the street was the most wild thing I saw this year.

Fuck, that's some wild shit. But yeah, of course the country has changed, and some foreigners didn't like it (I have already met some old dudes saying exactly this).

Ah, so I was right. You haven't actually watched any of their content (especially their documentaries).

I would say they probably know much more about China than you do.

You just sound bitter that you haven't been able to be make yourself 'a king'. I think you need anger lessons on top of that and hey, perhaps your home country's government should revoke your citizenship as you seem to like the CCP so much. I'm sure the CCP will be more than happy to have you join their 'wolf warriors'; you'd fit right in.

Anyway, we've hijacked this thread far too much and it's starting to get political. We should just end this here (you're more than welcome to argue with over PMs) and get back to the topic.

In the UK, the pay just isn't worth the amount of work (mainly bureaucracy and constant assessment). They pay teachers bonuses for staying certain amounts of time and people just do the minimum to get the bonus and then quit.

Sure, better not to continue here.

nush nush I don't understand what you mean by that, but I'm open for you to discuss it with me over PMs. It's not a trap and I'm not saying I'm an expert on the matter, so don't.

Many many things, that are not suitable for this topic (she's a minority from there) and are way too political.

My thinking is that if it is better to keep silent there is probably something to hide.

Would it also be wiser to stay silent about the origins of covid?

I'm keeping silent because political discussion is not ok on this forum. You think you might know it all, but you actually don't. But like said before, this is not the topic for it.

Mate, I said we should leave it.

You're ruining OP's thread (though OP has probably long gone after what this turned into).

Yeah, my family pushes me to come back and do a PGCE but ... man, it seems like hell. And my salary here is similar with much less work and cheaper cost of living.

I guess as I get older I will. Can't raise a family on ESL wages. But I'd just do my time and use the QT status and experience to get an IS job in Asia, honestly.

Same, easy work and the kids are generally great.
I'm really reaching my limit though.

One of my best friends is a secondary school teacher. He doesn't hate it it, but he doesn't recommend it.

I should probably go back to university, but it's so damn expensive now and I never liked it (education wise) anyway. Just pumping out bullshit essays that say what you know the lecturer wants to hear, with little teaching.
