I have a friend that uses it and I can't understand how she manages to live in a photoshop-less world
It sure took a while to get used to. I can see why someone who used to use PS will have troubles using Gimp. The default UI is a mess, less so in recent versions but I still had to customize the UI to the way I like it. For someone who want to learn image editing, I wouldn't recommend Gimp but either start with Photoshop and stick with it or use something simpler like Paint.net. I think the reason I could get onto Gimp is because I've known only some basic Photoshop stuffs* and then learned to do more advance tasks in Gimp, rather than just a transition from one to the other.
*In case if anyone ask why I didn't stick with Photoshop, it's because I don't have Photoshop. I took a Photoshop class in college because I needed credits.
