I have a friend that uses it and I can't understand how she manages to live in a photoshop-less world

It sure took a while to get used to. I can see why someone who used to use PS will have troubles using Gimp. The default UI is a mess, less so in recent versions but I still had to customize the UI to the way I like it. For someone who want to learn image editing, I wouldn't recommend Gimp but either start with Photoshop and stick with it or use something simpler like Paint.net. I think the reason I could get onto Gimp is because I've known only some basic Photoshop stuffs* and then learned to do more advance tasks in Gimp, rather than just a transition from one to the other.

*In case if anyone ask why I didn't stick with Photoshop, it's because I don't have Photoshop. I took a Photoshop class in college because I needed credits.

yea I tried it once out of curiosity but I think it's too late for me heh

tried this for a bit on my zooey deschanel collection but hmmm, seems to only work well on solid backgrounds and the results aren't too outstanding, at least not quickly enough. might be good for making avatars since you don't need all the small hairs when dealing with pictures that small

Did you try checking the Smart Radius box? I find that it produces better results than unchecked though you still need to play around with the values to get the best output. I'm still learning about the advanced features and have only used it twice for hair but have gotten pretty decent results.

I tried it with this pic of her and the earrings turned out to be an issue and getting the stray hairs without the background was hard, but maybe I'm just not good at it.

Tried working on just parts of her hair rather than her entire face, still couldn't get a decent picture. Yeah maybe it's just too hard for Photoshop to try and process. I'd leave out the long strands and just try and capture the tufts close to her head.
