Off topic, but I figure this is the place to ask as it has people directly doing what I want to continue to do, but is there any newish free programs for making mostly just these avatars/transparencies? I've been using a hella old version of photoshop my friend gave me for years.

I think it looks fine but that's up to you.

Unless what you wanted was for the whole thing except the lines to be transparent then well yeah.

GIMP is one of the best free alternatives in my opinion, It's what I used all the time until I got PS through college. Paint.net is pretty good too.

Difficult to add transparency to this one and keep the quality acceptable.

You could try this vector image with an added outer glow so it shows on dark gaf
