One of their biggest problems is in how they did recurring characters. They tried to just copy what they saw on SNL, which did them well. But MadTV would not take the same characters and put them in different situations so they'd react differently. They would always take the same characters, who do the same things, regardless of who's around.
Every time Stuart came out, you knew what would happen.
Every time asian lady came out, you knew how the other person would react.
SNL mixed it up. It wasn't the same each time, things would change and that bore fruit for humor. MadTV just did not understand this, so it became a tedious comedy grind.
I had a major crush on Nicole Sullivan when I was a kid, though.
