Sun News Network is about to sign off, permanently. CBC News has learned that the cable news television channel will shut down early tomorrow.

The network began broadcasting in 2011, launching a right-of-centre programming schedule.

It has had a constant challenge attracting viewers.

Its supporters blamed the CRTC for not giving it the same access enjoyed by news channels operated by CBC and CTV.

Almost 200 people are employed at Sun News.

Surprised it lasted as long as it did.
I guess it was just a matter of time after the CRTC ruling and the quebecor paper sell off.
Can't say I watch the news at all for the last few years, but the only time I was aware of sun news was when they had some kind of awful blunder or foolishness.

It's a shame for the many people employed there.

It was embarassingly low budget

I remember watching it for shits and giggles during an election and they had to resort to reading out twitter comments talking about their shitty channel to fill time.

Or was it the fact that they railed against CBC for using government funds and then asking the government for money to help them out in troubled times........ruining what ever shred of credibility they had when they first started

On the one hand, it sucks for people who are losing their jobs.

On the other hand: HAHAHAHA. Anything that puts Ezra Levant out of work is good news.

Good riddance. I'm guessing something else will replace it anyway though.

Don't be so sure. SNN didn't fail just because Canadians rejected its right-wing slant. It was buried in the abyss of channels listings and had a hard time getting picked up by major cable providers (because Rogers and Bell each have their own news networks which would put it in direct competition with SNN).

Starting up a news network from scratch is not cheap and is going to have a hell of a time being profitable.

it also proves that Pierre-Karl Peladeau is a failed businessman who just rides to coattails of his father.

Ever since PKP took over Quebecor media empire; many of his experiments turned out as failures and he has cost his company lots of money.

The only successes PKP has ever had was with the help of Government Subsidies using public moneys.

Sun News Network is a total failure

Which makes me wonder how PKP managed to lead the PQ...

As of 5 am, it's gone:

Ben Mulroney seems pretty unhappy about it.
His father Brian sits at the head of board of directors of Quebecor.

It always fascinated me when Federal Conservatives join forces with Seperatist Nationalists like PKP

Conservatives are not true Federalists

He is not leader yet. But he is polling first now in their leadership race.

This is a man who went to Harper's home several times. Gets Federal subsidies for Videotron in business but then in turn politically bad mouths Federalism.

PKP is scum

It was an awful, awful "news" channel. In fact, it wasn't even a news channel. The were just cherry picking subjects to spew their right-wing bs.

Still, I will miss it because I probably had more laughs watching Sun News than watching the Comedy Network. And too bad for those who lost their jobs. Except Ezra, Brian and co. Screw them.

Good riddance. It provided nothing of value to the Canadian News Scene. I feel bad that people will be unemployed, but the network was horrible.

just lol at these replies

i'd love to hear opinions on CBC
CBC is amazing. They do actual journalism and fund some interesting projects... sadly the Conservatives have been lighting their funding on fire, but the fact they can maintain their quality despite that is proof of its greatness.
