FPS map design is completely dead.

Since I just played last night...Hunt Showdown has some great maps and level design but shit the bed with the latest map they released with the update. In my opinion at least. I groan every time I get spawned into that shit.

Games used to be made by gamers. That is why they understood game design and knew how to properly make maps.
Today, at best we get someone that has never played a game. At worst, we get people that hate videogames.

Esports three lane design bull crap ruined online shooters.
You can sort of argue that the genre of competitive shooters has been professionally "solved" by CS and COD, makes the foray into that space by EA/DICE all the more mystifying. They used to be kings of bigass multiplayer casual spectacle-FPS. You could comfortably buy COD and BF both, they were properly distinct.

Anyway, it's not our problem to worry about their franchise, if EA executives want to do weird stupid shit with it that's their business.

I could be wrong and I havent played BF6 and I doubt I ever will touch any mp game ever again, but in older bf games like the third one, campers were absolutely ruining entire games, and I imagine they made the maps smaller to counter those people.

Ut99... Q3A

Cs..

Those all have great maps and memorable.

I like The Pit from Halo 3

Dunno what other maps are supposed to be good. Nuke town sucks
I agree 100%.

I would add to that list:

Blood Gulch and Chill Out from Halo 1.
Wake Island, El Alamein and Berlin from Battlefield 1942.
Q3DM17 from Quake III (it is probably one of the best multiplayer FPS maps of all time) and Q3DM6
Facing Worlds and Deck 16 from Unreal Tournament

Honorable mention: Glitch from Titanfall 2

I mean they are definitely going to be in about every fps. Some maps feel like sniper central but I will give the devs some credit. There are plenty of things you can do or even placements where you can make a mad dash that wont leave you exposed for too long. Unlike other BF games where you had to do zig zags and crazy legs to not get shot moving from point to point

Call of Duty map design has been awful for years, Battlefield hasn't been great for a long time either, I don't mind the BF6 maps, my main issue with them is that they're mostly made with the intention of playing like operation locker, not ever every map needs to feel the same and i'd like some bigger slower paced maps.

Battlefront 2 had the worst map design, they were all designed like a funnel, where the closer you got to the final objective, the tighter it would get. That was pretty much the turning point to where dice fell off in the map design department.

Dice has not made great maps since BF1.

Off topic:

By third one do you mean Battlefield 3 or Battlefield 2(the third Battlefield game proper).

Cuz even if I main'd and still do engineer there was no camping against me and my squad in Battlefield 3, even if I played with randos I could easily switch to recon and counter 99% of campers before they could even set up their tents.

In fact in most if not all BF games other than in the Rush game mode camping is a pretty useless play style.
Even defending actually camping doesnt make much sense, most control points are set up as such you cant really just sit there, 2 or 3 squads are attacking and you are fucked.

Also a lot of squad will just abandon a control point and go for another and leave you sitting there making smores for the rest of the match if they can fight for the other control points.

P.S I know we aint talking about the Metro, cuz even there if you tried to camp early hopefully !admin would kick you, cuz camping would usually just completely hinder your squad if not whole team and get you base raped before the match is really even going.

P.P.S Yes, im one of those sadomasichists who liked Metro 24/7........win or lose unless your team was dumb as shit, it was always intense.

On topic.

Dunno if i could say all FPSes have bad map design......arent there only like 5 or 6 none BR active FPS games right now?

Call of Duty 202X - I might just suck at CoD now.
MCC has the whole collection and they work to this day.
Battlefront 2 has pretty good maps.
Valorant - Not versed but IRL friends give it praise.
CS2 - Im not good at it, but I like the maps.
Siege - I fell off too long ago, but the maps didnt seem bad, just certain patches werent loved by the community
Destiny 2 Crucible - also has some good maps that works for the game.
Overwatch 2 - wait why dont I hear about this game anymore?

But I think with BF some maps are just better for different game modes....some maps are brilliant for Rush yet dont work so well for Conquest and vice versa.

With BF6 we'll see if they release a true expansion that comes with some truly great maps.
