Yup, a local French company said that they were no longer able to sell their paid maps which were worse than free Google maps so the ever protectionist French government tried to intervene and force Google to charge money for Maps in the country.

This is what happens when countries start going broke. they get desperate and start attacking success around them to try and nickel and dime and in the end it doesn't do anything for the country,
This has nothing to do with that and everything with French media companies trying to extort Google.
Telecoms and media conglomerates all over Europe are trying their damn best to keep Google down in order to increase their revenue and maintain the status quo. Here's an example: Telecoms are demanding hilarious amounts of money from Google, claiming that Larry Page & co. are "freeloders", making sweet ad money from their costly infraestructure without giving shit in return (hey, it's not like consumers are PAYING THEM in order to access Google's services along other countless sites). Motherfuckers basically want to have their cake and eat it. Twice.
Unfortunately, those companies have an enormous sway in France and Hollande seems pretty cozy with them, but this is an European-wide problem that needs to be dealt with ASAP.
