Fraudulent Unemployment Increasing?

So I get an email from HR at work today that someone tried to fraudulently claim unemployment under my name.
They obviously denied it as they know that wasn't me. Waiting for a letter from the state on it and to confirm with the state myself.
I went ahead and froze all my credit from at the Big Three credit agencies and put a fraud alert out.

Same thing happened with my fiancee a few months back then my father as well.

Anyone seeing a rise in it on their end?

It's pretty much common knowledge at this point. Epoch times did a few pieces on their youtube channel about the problem specifically in California.

Basically, some scammers were either bold and decided to see what they could get away with, or otherwise found out that some states pretty much stopped doing anything to verify whether you were eligible before they started paying out benefits. High profile individuals like Scott Peterson, who is in prison, his name and information was used to collect unemployment. So were many other imprisoned individuals. California, Washington, and I believe a few other liberal states got hit for billions. This was partially because they were allowing people to backdate claims, basically you could fill out the thing saying you were unemployed for the past 6 months and they would pay you up to the present, plus the extra money that was going out because of Covid 19 without verifying almost anything.

It's pretty much the thing to be in if your a criminal right now.

Hmm, I'd be looking for a family/acquaintance link somewhere. Time-frame and familial victims are just too coincidental for there not to be a common denominator with acess to the information and details needed to try this.

I can tell you Texas has cracked down on it and started denying claims to anyone who doesn't verify their identity through a third party service. I was technically unemployed for 2 week and even that trigger a full identity check (way after the fact at that, with them threatening to pull back those 2 weeks of funds if i didnt comply lol)

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Yeah it is on the rise, it means they have all your information including your SSN. I would buy an identity protection service and alert all your banks.

That would be very disappointing if true. Immediate family I definitely would strike out. But acquittances could be possible. Or just bad luck.

I think it's way more likely someone purchased a list of personal information on the dark web and then used it to fill out claims.

I also got a call from my HR company about the same thing.

Now I have to figure out where my info was stolen from.

You guys should had seen the Canada covid tracker. Not sure if it's still around.

During the big covid surge last spring, the Canada unemployment rate skyrocketed to the equivalent of roughly +3-4 million more people losng their jobs.

Free wheeler Trudeau says covid $2000/mth handouts are ready to go without verification of job loss, shit loads of people sign up including people I know who are still working hoping the gov doesn't retroactively come back and get the money (which they claimed they would do later)

And by around June, the covid payment tracker said 8-9 million when the job losses were maybe half that. Not sure why you would publicly show an updated tracker, but probably to make people think they are robin hood. Ya you are. To twice as many people as it should be.

Thanks Justin. How's that "retroactive claw back" initiative going?

If any of you Yanks want some money, give it a shot and apply. They'd probably send you $2000/mth too.

Governments seem so loosey goosey with assistance, no doubt more people around the world are giving it a shot filing for benefits.

Yes, Colorado has more fraudulent claims than legit ones since the lockdowns began. Happened to a dude at my office too. But hey, since when has government cared about wasteful spending?

Good luck. Your info is out there. The older you are the more likely it is that your information is for sale.

Most any employer you have had still keeps a copy of your records electronically somewhere, and if they get hacked your ss number is now for sale. How many times have you had to fill out information about yourself to setup an account for a service? There are dozens if not hundreds of points from which your info could be stolen and sold.

This is a fact of life, your information is for sale. Probably the hacker, the buyer, and the fraudsters aren't even us citizens, and are probably operating in a safe haven that won't extradite. We live in a complex society where there is zero incentive for intelligent people not to move to another country and setup operations defrauding Americans. Doing this is far more lucrative than any job you could get with comparable skills.
