Well, it's finally being released on October 4th, but the whole thing (besides "Waltz" and "Extraordinary Machine") has been re-recorded... and to be honest the re-recorded version of "O' Sailor" is pretty dire :(

and the new album cover is really ugly:

Rerecorded? =/

Yeah :( .. Brion's production coupled with Fiona's great melodies is what made the leaked version of special.. now it's been stripped of all that.. you can hear "o' sailor" and "Parting gift" on her webiste :-\

Man... they had to fuck it up didn;t they?

I heard that Fiona didnt like Jon Brion's arrangements, and that was one of the reasons that it wasnt released (the other being that Sony couldnt find a single).

WTF. The album was fine just the way it was...

O Sailor sounds like shit! What was she thinking?
It almost completely lacks the emotion and energy that the first version had.
WTF guys. WTF.

And why does it "blow"?
Oh god, don't start.

It "blows" because the tempo is too fast, it doesn't exploit the good melody and overall vibe that the original had. During the chrous there's way too much being played (the flute or whatever sucks), she doesn't sound like she cares about what she's singing. The end is way too poppy, instead of the beautiful orchestrated thing there's layered Fiona vocals and then some semi-synthesised crap. Pathetic pop.

It's missing everything that made it my favorite Fiona Apple song.
Oh well, at least we still have the original.

Whatever. I liked it and so did a lot of other people. Let's just hope Fiona had no choice but to re-record. Even then, it's pretty sad that the record label would force her to ruin her songs for the sake of it being accessible.

Yep, I've got it on my external hd and also backed up.
It's too bad we can't buy that version.
Maybe she'll release them as b-sides or something.

I'm listening to the original, and it's so classy and elegant. It sounds like something that a jazz or blues singer would do back in the 30's or 40's. That's what the song is intended to sound like. Not some super poppy overproduced representation of it. I've heard a lot of her songs over the years and the first version of O Sailor is definitely her best IMO.

Please also free:

Mos Def's Black Jack Johnson
Q-Tip's Kamaal the Abstract
Zack De La Rocha's solo album

I wasn't a big fan of 'O Sailor' anyways. I'll see if i like the re-recorded version any better.

About 4 or 5 of the tracks on the leaked version seemed a tad incomplete to me anyways, so maybe they just punched them up a bit.

Favorite songs from the CD:

"Please, Please, Please"
"Better version of me"
"Ext. Machine"
"Red, Red, Red"
"Oh well"

Those songs alone justify a purchase. Damn, that cover art is nasty looking. Hopefully this means Fiona will do some touring.

Rubbish. They exploit artists, mould 'em like clay, and manufacture consumerist, diluted crap.

Major labels are disgusting. Fuck 'em all.

Thanks for posting the informative article from one of my favorite producers. I'm going to listen to The Hammer Party right now in tribute.

nobody puts a gun to these artists heads and makes them sign with a major lable. Want to make wierd, niche, abstract music? release an independant album, but don't act all shocked when Sony wants something that is going to sell a million records and make them a ton of $$$.

Until recently major labels had a tight grip on national distribution. Why do you think they have been fighting so hard against digital music on the internet and have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into stuff like iTMS?

Did you know the RIAA now says home copying hurts music more than online piracy? I saw this on the CNN news ticker yesterday. Couldn't believe my eyes. Had to read it twice :lol I dunno if they finally figured it out, or if like, someone told them to shut up.

It's true. They need to fucking die off. We need a music revolution!

Home copying as in ripping and putting it on a ipod or whatever? If that's what they mean, then they've gotten even more hysterically delusional.

I dunno. It was just a snippet of info unfortunately.

"Home Copying" could mean a million different (incorrect) things to the 40-50+ year old suits that dictate the industry.

I didn't think the original version of the album was that wonderful anyway. It sounded pretty nice, but I enjoyed When the Pawn and Tidal way more.
Agreed.

However, the point here is she was forced to change it.

Here's the article for those who want to read it.

God. :lol Up next: "Listening to a new song on the radio more than once a day hurts single and record sales!"

Radio DJ: "The RIAA asks that if there are more than 5 people in your room listening to this next song on the radio that 3 of them leave the listening area until the song is over. Thank you." :lol

There's a 1 minute or so long clip of the new "Not About Love" on her site... jesus they fucking neutered it. Ugh. I'm not sure if I want to buy this...

There's also a leak of about half of the new "Get Him Back"... it sounds pretty good actually, probably better than the first version.. but then again I've never really liked that version..

You know, Diablos and Star Power were right. The new version of "O, Sailor" is godawful. I'll pay to see her in concert, but I can wait to buy the album.

I was hoping that since O' Sailor was never my favorite track off of the leaked verion of Extraordinary Machine, and that I still really didn't like this re-recorded version that perhaps it was just the song I didn't like and that the re-recorded versions would not be half bad.

Then I saw the video they put up for a good portion of 'Not About Love' and I'm seriously crushed at how they have changed up the sound. Its so empty and void of anything remotely interestiny musically. Hell, they even walked all over the lins by staggering the beat so that its hard to even follow. Perhaps with repeated listens, and a better quality version than some web video version, it will grow on me. For now though I am really hesitant to hear the rest of the album in this re-recorded way.

Heh, I really really hope it was the poor sound quality. The piano totally gets killed in the rerecording. =(

Definately looking forward to hearing the re-recorded version of the tracks. I havn't been blown away by the redone versoin of O' Sailor but it has grown on me. Perhaps the rest of the the album will follow the same path?

Either way the leaked version from a year or so ago is fantastic, if this isn't amazing then I'll just view it as a remixed idea. :)

Amazing that this thread keeps getting bumped. More Fiona fans than I thought.

Yeah, it comes out on October 4th.

Yeah ... I'm a pretty big fan ...

Did anyone see here recent live TV performance? I think it was on that VH1 hurricane relief special from a little while back?

Wow is all I can say. She played the title track - man, her lyrics always showed hints of greatness, but I was seriously taken aback by this song. She is SERIOUSLY talented.

Yeah, I'm not saying the performance was perfect - I'm just talking about the song itself.

Even though I'm a fan, I haven't downloaded the leaked version that's been out forever.
