Front Mission 3 Remake May Be Using AI Artwork

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

On these web pages, originally, were low-resolution images, often of photographs or drawn art. The remake now contains ... let's say "enhanced" (heavy quotes) versions of these new images, somehow re-created for the remake. The new images are evidently attempting to show what was in the original game, but to far less-than-ideal success.

To be clear, we don't yet have specifics about what happened here. We're not sure if this is an awkward upscaler, generative AI, or misguided hand-made updates - but we do know that the results are undeniably suboptimal. Nothing specifically about "AI" is currently mentioned in the credits page for the Front Mission 3 Remake, but examining the details of various images we suspect that the original pixelated images were fed into an algorithm that then hallucinated a lot of details that weren't there before. The higher the quality of the original image, the less likely this was to happen. This is why the character portraits are largely fine, and everything else suffers more considerably. There also seems to be a filter on almost all images (either applied by the development team or algorithmically) to mimic photographs shot on film.

No issue with AI artwork if it is reviewed and adjusted by professional artists until the results are satisfactory and consistent. It can be fine, it can speed up things, but it is never immediately good. Always needs to be adjusted.

I agree completely - but this doesn't look to be the case here.

For example, this shot from the original game that shows a crashed mech:

Got turned into a weird helicopter with strange rotors parked next to a car. The broken pavement got turned into police caution tape.

I cannot be convinced that a human looked at this image and said "Yeah, that's good - go ahead and ship it as-is".
 
I clicked on two yt thumbs this morning that turned out to be completely ai.

In the case of games... we've been begging for games to be made fast and on smaller budgets. If you don't like it, I guess it's a careful what you wish for situation. I know that's where I'm at.
 
The only reason I bought the first 2 remakes was to own an official western release of FM1 and 2.
I hated the graphics and translation itself of both Remakes. Amateur hour crap.
FM3 seems to be cutting even more corners.

I have access to the rest of the series on original hardware so im good.
FM3,4,5 play and look perfectly fine on my PS1/2 with upscaler.

I simply cannot stand the dev team they have in charge of these Remakes.

So what? A.I. doesn't mean it's automatically shit.

Edit * the buildings in the third set of pictures in fact DO look shit so idk🤷‍♂️

Well...that's mildly disappointing.

I get that the Network has a crapload of really low-resolution images in it, and something really had to be done about that considering that the game's a remaster, but ...
No, this ain't it.
 
I find it a little gross, personally. Partially because the results don't look great, and partially because I don't like setting precedents for lazy AI usage in games, however inevitable it might be.
